RECOMMENDED

I thoroughly enjoyed reading most of this book. It’s basically broken into four sections, with each containing a series of short stories. Sections 1, 2, & 4 were great, and some were even inspiring, but I found the third section to be rather gruesome… (Double Header, for example takes place in Saudi Arabia and is about public executions; another story is about the details of leg amputation and “A New Type of Bowling” involves skulls…) Overall, the author is a very skilled writer and I enjoy his style, but I’d like to read some of his work developed into a murder mystery or maybe a western.

This is the most cleverly written memoir I have ever read. The memoirs are unchronological short entries in which the author disclaims to sometimes embellishing. That said, the entries were very realistic, and appeared mostly true throughout the book. Short entries, a short story, short poetry scattered, and an attempt to find universal truth to life’s events throughout as well, comprise this passionate, transparent, direct, thoughtful reminiscings. I was highly impressed. 5 stars.
