Interesting story, but much too short—would have been better if about twice as long...there would have been more room for character development, and it wouldn't have seemed so abrupt. Anna and her young cousin are lost in the woods while playing hide and seek. The slightly older neighbor boy who saves them in turn needs to be rescued years later—except that Anna has never gotten over her fear of the woods and can't enter them. Despite the lack of depth, the story is still entertaining and enjoyable.
HIDE AND SEEK : A SHORT STORY - BY TUDOR ROBINS = 54 PAGES
I TOTALLY ENJOYED THIS SHORT STORY. IT HAS FAMILY, VACATIONS, FEARS, LOVE, AND A HORSE. ALL OF THE INGREDIENTS OF A GOOD STORY. I LOVED SEEING THE 2 MAIN CHARACTERS GROW IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP, WHILE HELPING EACH OTHER. I FINISHED READING THIS E-BOOK ON 3/27/2024.
It’s summer and the family gathers together. Their home is in a rural area with lots of room. Fourteen year old Anna finds her cousin Fraser least likable. He’s a showoff. The cousins play hide and seek at the end of the day. All of the younger children beg Anna to help them hide, but she’s busy trying to find a place where Fraser won’t find her. One of her cousins follows her. It begins to get darker and Anna finds she’s wandered too far and is not familiar with where she is. She and Thalia find a safe place under a large tree in the woods and wait. Keeping her voice calm for Thalia, she encourages her to go to sleep on her lap, while under that calm demeanor, she is very afraid.
When she hears steps approaching, she keeps quiet. She’s not sure if it is friend or danger. It turns out to be Ryan, who is a distant neighbor. They had sent out a search party. Afterwards, she begins to form a bond with Ryan. Years later, they form a search party for him. She has to go back into the woods that she has been frightened of since that night she and Thalia were lost.
This is a very short story, so we don’t get a lot of depth into the characters, especially in that it spans a few years in Anna’s life. Yet there is enough to entice me and I would have liked to known more of Anna and Ryan. It’s a very sweet young love story with no impropriety. There was just a bit too much going on in the story for it to be placed in such a small space – only 48 pages. Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
In ‘Hide & Seek’ we meet Anna on different times in her life. The first time we meet her she is eleven years old and playing the game hide and seek with her cousins. That day Anna is saved by Ryan, a guy a view years older than Anna. After that day we meet Anna each year. And each year Anna gets older she meets Ryan and all she wants to do is spend more time with him.
Although this story was really short (much too short for me because I really didn’t want it to end :D) I really loved it from the very first page. I don’t know how Tudor does it but just like with ‘Appaloosa Summer’ I was totally pulled into this story. I read it in one sit and really needed to know what would happen next with Anna and Ryan. I loved how this story began and continued from that day on. It was really nice to read.
What I really liked about this book was the way there’s also a part for the horse Red. I love reading stories with horses in it, and even though this story was really short, Red had a nice part in it. This story tells Anna’s story and I just loved it. Definitely another great story by Tudor Robins.
Hide & Seek is a novella in the Island Trilogy, centred around island life, a love of horses and delicious young-adult romance. Hide & Seek is as equally well written and enjoyable as Appaloosa Summer. Anna spends her summers on the island, and she and her family have settled into a well-rehearsed pattern of family parties, fireworks and odd jobs. For Anna, though, the forest holds the biggest appeal - and to her the familiar tracks and hidden pathways are nothing to be afraid of. That is until she and her cousin get lost. Terrified, wet and alone, Anne and Thalia are relieved when they are rescued by Ryan. But this rescue just might spark a series of summer encounters that will challenge Anna to face her biggest fear - and there might be some kissing involved too.
Look out for the second book in the Island Trilogy being released early-to-mid 2015.
