The Darker Side of Hampton County Hampton County is a rural county in South Carolina with a long and storied history, but it has a shady side. Author Michael DeWitt details the corruption, murders and crimes that remained in the memories of locals for years.>p/>
I've read a few of the books by this publisher, but this is the first I've read about Hampton County. I have to admit to strictly picking it up because of my fascination with the Murdaugh Mayhem. That being said, being a resident of the Upstate region of SC, I've followed Michael DeWitt's coverage of the case pretty closely. He's a true, self-identified storyteller and he's a good one. I found this book to be engaging and interesting on many levels. If you're planning to read it for the Murdaugh stuff, he brings plenty. But I'm sure folks will say he didn't write enough. To which I say, read his next book! Because he lists it in the notes for the Murdaugh chapter and it appears to be due out in August 2023. I for one am definitely looking forward to it!
Not sure that Hampton County's history is more wicked than other towns, but an interesting read nonetheless. Loved reading how things were in our past and how far we've come. There was a bit too much dedicated to the Murdaugh family but guess you can't mention wicked without that family. Really liked how the good was entered at the end of the book; Mrs W L Woods, Hampton County's lady jailer was truly a hero.
