This book provides a really good soup to nuts overview of the whole admissions process and is written in a very thoughtful and engaging way. The concept of how best to "position" an applicant is a really important concept that probably could have been dealt with in a few more pages. For more on this, I would recommend Cal Newport's "How to be a High School Superstar" which focuses almost exclusively on the "extracurricular hook."
