What could be better than a visit to Grandma's? A sleepover , of course! But despite all the excitement, despite Grandma's delicious special meal, and despite Grandpa's fun games, there's still a moment when home suddenly seems very far away. That's when Grandma tells a soothing story and presents a family heirloom--a quilt to keep her granddaughter cozy all night long. Mary Ann Hoberman and Tiphanie Beeke have together created a universal tale about the love and comfort that only a grandma can provide.
Text-to-Self Connection I love this book! It brought back so many memories when I was a little girl. Just about every Friday I would go stay with my grandma and spend the night. I remember cooking, sewing and reading with her. At my grandma’s house, she has quilts that have been passed down generation to generation on all of her beds in her house. I remember how beautiful they were. The little girl in the book was excited about staying at her grandma’s house but wanted her parents at night. I remember a time when I wanted my parents but my grandma would read me a story and I would fall fast asleep. Great book to read to your own kids!
This book was very relatable to me as when I stayed with my grandparents as a young girl, I also was homesick at times. The little girl packs her things and is so excited that she gets to stay with her grandma. As the night winds down after she spends the day playing games, eating, painting, making music, and so on she starts to feel a little bit homesick. Grandma tells her a tale of when she stayed with her grandma and how the quilt that she owns got started when she was homesick. It makes the little girl feel better and she is able to sleep good that night with the quilt on her bed. These pictures were illustrated and created with watercolor and acrylics. The pictures appear to be a little bit blurry or smudged at times but that is what makes them so unique. They also have very bright colors in them as well with all different shades that make it so appealing to the reader. This book has simple language in it and is written in rhyme which exposes children to different styles of writing. I would enjoy having this book in my classroom.
"I'm Going to Grandma'" by Mary Ann Hoberman. This book is about a young girl sleeping over at her grandparent's house for the first time. The story itself is told In rhymes that are engaging for readers of all ages. The illustrations work to portray a sense of warmth and coziness. The young girl is constantly enjoying new experiences throughout the story and ultimately ends up going to sleep in a comfy bed after a bedtime story from her grandma. The poetic nature and bright illustrations make this a great book for a read aloud in the classroom or to even have in the classroom library. I love this book! This poem shares a classic tale of a young girl spending the night with her grandparents. While this book contains bright varying images and a relatable story there are a few drawbacks. The first one being an inconsistent rhyme pattern, on some pages, there is a clear ABBBC pattern and on others, there is no pattern at all. Although this is alleviated slightly with the fact there is consistent meter creating a sing-songy feel. Another drawback lies within the plot when being dropped off the protagonist is told that she will be told something special that night, clearly creating suspense in the story. However, the special thing that the protagonist was told related to a blanket that has been in the family for many generations. Therefore, there was a significant let down as it was indicated something great was going to happen whilst the outcome was less than satisfactory.
This book is very relatable book to kids who have visited their grandparents over night. It is about a young girl who spends the night with her grandma and she finds herself a little sad being away from home. Luckily, grandma knows all she needs is some love and a special quilt. This van be used in the classroom to help children with worries such as being away from their parents.
I'm Going to Grandma's is about a girl going to stay at her grandparents house for the night. After packing everything she is on her way. Grandma makes cookies and she shares with grandparents new puppy. The weekend is full of fun activities with grandpa, grandma, and their new puppy. Time to get ready for bed but the little girl starts to feel home sick. Grandma shared a similar experience and the little girl goes to sleep.
This book was super cute although whatever was used for the illustrations I am not a fan of, they look blurry a little bit. I enjoyed this book because I connect with the little girl getting home sick. I remember it took me forever to stay the night anywhere without my mom because of it.
This would be a great book to have on the classroom shelf. I'm sure many kids could connect with the feeling of being homesick and hopefully it would make them feel better that it is a normal thing to happen. Also, this would be a fun read before sending the students off on the weekend. Some may be going on sleepovers and it would just remind them that it would be okay to be homesick and talk about that a little bit.
It is time for a sleepover at Grandma’s and the excitement is huge for one little girl. Despite all of Grandma and Grandpa’s fun cooking and activities, it is soon almost time for bed, and the little girl is now missing home a lot. Feeling sad and funny, Grandma tells her granddaughter that it will be all right. Grandma tells her granddaughter a story of when she stayed the night at her own grandma’s house as a child. She tells her of a beautiful dress made by her great-great-grandma in which was outgrown and made into a quilt for her bed. In the end, the little girl gets to sleep under the beautiful quilt made by her great-great-grandma, making her feel much more comfortable sleeping away from home.
I loved this book because of its message, the colorful illustrations, and how most children can relate to this book. One thing I particularly liked about this book was the black and white page that represented the past and showed off the colorful quilt.
Children can relate to this book because for most, sleeping away from home is a little difficult at first. If kids are still afraid of sleeping away from home, then this book would probably let them know that it really isn’t that bad. This book might make kids more confident and brave, knowing that the little girl had a good time at her grandma’s.
In I'm Going to Grandma's by Mary Ann Hoberman, a girl is getting ready for her first solo sleepover at her grandma's house. When she gets homesick, Grandma shares a story and a family heirloom.
My daughter chose the book because we had just come home from our own trip down to my mother's mountain home. It was Harriet's first time at this home and it was both an exciting and but somewhat scary experience, especially the first night.
Like the girl in the book, Harriet listened to a number of family stories while we were there. The home is decorated in part with things from family members no longer living, most of whom she's never met. She does, though, like to the hear their stories.
In the case of I'm Going to Grandma's, the heirloom is a quilt made from the her great-great-grandmother's old and outgrown clothing. It's implied that later generations have also added to the quilt, although I'm not sure if the current girl will also be adding to it with her grandmother.
That repurposing of old clothing struck another chord with Harriet. She has an old shirt from her first year at preschool. It has her picture on it, so it's not something we can, or want, to donate. Instead we've decided to turn it into a pillow.
“I’m Going to Grandma’s” is a poetry picture book. I liked this book although the story is a little trite.
Mary Ann Hoberman uses rhyme such as “My grandma likes dancing. She stands on her toes. She’s planted a garden where everything grows. She has a whole closet of dressing-up clothes. There’s a bride one all lacy and white.”
The pictures depict the story told by the rhyme.
My rating for this book is three stars. I like the rhyme and the illustrations are good. The story is not very original but I think children will be able to relate to the quilt described in the story. Each patch in the quilt holds a story of where it came from and children will probably be able to recall a story of a family tradition told to them by an elder.

A book about staying overnight at Grandma and Grandpa's for the first time. The story of a little girl staying with her grandparents is told in rhyme. She is happy to be there, but by bath time is uneasy about this new experience. Grandma shows her the quilt that is on the guest room bed and tells the little girls stories about family and the quilt. The illustrations are in soft pastels and show the coziness of the grandparents' home.
I liked this book. It is a great way to teach students about their ancestors. I chose this book, because I love staying at my grandma's house and so I can relate and the title stood out to me.
"I'm Going to Grandma's" by Mary Ann Hoberman is a fiction children's picture book. This book is about a girl who is very excited because she's staying the night at her grandparents house. She cooks with them, they eat dinner, and she plays dress up with her grandma. Her grandma tells her a story about a family heirloom she finds. I thought this book had a good story! This book is a sweet story that kids will love to read! I think this book would be best in a first maybe second grade classroom.
