Another one I read during the bad monsoon rainy days. Surprisingly, I liked it but I skipped a lot of it.
Barbara Thiering is said to have discovered a decoding system, "Pesher", which she says is found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. A Pesher is a code used to decipher Biblical era texts that were written to appear one way on their face, but, after applying the Pesher, reveal an entirely different meaning underneath. She had used this to decode the the Gospel of John.
Her depiction of Jesus is so radical. All the traditionally accepted events we Christians believe (the Virgin Birth, the Crucifixion and Resurrection, the Miracles, etc.) has not happened.
Why I liked it: it was very interesting and some places very curious. Read it but don't take it too seriously. Use that brain the God had given.
The biggest flaw in this book is Jesus that emerges from Thiering's pesher is really nobody. Then there's no sensible reason to write gospels and tests about him or a religion to be born. And WHY did thousands of early Christians allow themselves to be persecuted/killed for "a lie" - (the Birth, the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus)?
Also the book is very badly edited. You really have to start from the middle, otherwise you'll get completely lost.
