Quantum Effects for Spintronic Devices Optimization: From perfect multilayered magnetic tunnel junctions to granular magnetic multilayers, new ideas in Spintronics

This work is mainly dedicated to the study of spin dependent transport in magnetic nanostructures. The principal objective is the optimization of the magnetoresistive performance of such structures, in order to built high density Magnetic Random Access Memories (MRAM). Nevertheless, new resistive properties are also found, that could be useful for another type of non-volatile memory device, in this case, Resistive Random Access Memories (ReRAM). The book is basically divided into two the first one considers the theoretical analysis of perfect multilayered magnetic junctions with quantum coherent transport (in the context of Landauer formula), revealing an impressive enhancement of the magnetoresistance, in the so called shallow band regime; the second one is dedicated to the experimental study of magnetic granular multilayers, ten granular Co80Fe20 layers embedded into an insulating Al2O3 matrix, showing interesting resistive and capacitive switching properties, and complemented by a theoretical description of percolation charge transport in these materials (using a mean-field approach).

About the author

HUGO SILVA ENDEIZA (Tongoy, Coquimbo, 1892 — Santiago, 1979). Con una trayectoria en las letras más vinculada al periodismo que a la literatura, Hugo Silva fue uno de los pocos autores chilenos cuya obra ha logrado más de treinta ediciones, mérito aún mayor si se toma en cuenta que lo alcanzó gracias a una sola novela, Pacha Pulai, la que hasta el día de hoy es parte de las lecturas obligatorias en la enseñanza chilena.
Hermano del poeta y Premio Nacional de Literatura, Víctor Domingo Silva, de quien adquirió el amor por las letras, se inició a los 14 años en el periodismo, al ingresar como reportero al diario El Chileno de Valparaíso. Más tarde trabajó como redactor de cables y corrector de pruebas en El Mercurio para, en 1916, convertirse en director del periódico regional La Provincia de Iquique. Poseedor de una pluma destacada y ágil, la dimensión de cronista de Hugo Silva es posiblemente una de sus facetas más elogiadas, principalmente por las columnas que hicieron famoso su seudónimo de Julio César en el diario La Nación.
Permanente motor de publicaciones, dirigió diversos medios, como La Nación, Los Tiempos, Zig-Zag, El Mercurio de Antofagasta y La Prensa de Tocopilla, ganando en esta actividad el prestigió que le significó obtener en 1962 el Premio Nacional de Periodismo en la categoría de «Crónica» y, más tarde, en 1968, la incorporación a la Academia Chilena de la Lengua.
