Hi again, Black Butler. I'm not sure what kind of relationship this is. I mean, I'm committed to you. I do plan to read you until your writers decide to end it between us but you're just so meh at the moment. You had a few volumes that were fun and that made me want to read the next one immediately. The last few volumes... let's just not talk about them. I don't want to fight, you know, also, if I think about your last few volumes too much I will Zzz away because honestly: so boring. I liked volume 9 way better because of... a feel to it it had. I have to be honest with you, I only liked volume 9 so much more than the circus arc volumes because it was kind of Detective Conan-esque. I know, I know and I'm so sorry but I can't help it, this literally saved our relationship, even though it feels like... I'm cheating? A little more truth: I'd choose Detective Conan over you any day. OK, I think I hurt our relationship more with this than with anything else I said BUT to make you feel better, I'm not going to break up. Your cliffhanger makes me curious to see where our relationship is headed next and I just won't quit you, I promise¹. Ttyl, Black Butler. Staying Detective Conan-esque will make me very happy, so don't change for the next few volumes, OK?
¹Don't hold me to that promise, though. I might change my mind.
This volume largely concerns the beginnings of a Sherlock Holmes style mystery, with Doyle even appearing as a character in the story. It's an ok arc start, but I really enjoyed the circus arc so it did not beat that yet.
No really, this whole story that starts in this book is just such a classic murder mystery that has all of Christie’s hallmarks all over it! It is clear that the writer Toboso has read a Christie novel or many.
Queen Victoria order Lord Earl Ciel Phantomhive, one of our main characters, to invite a certain number of people to his mansion for a feast/ball or whatever you wanna call it. Well, not a ball maybe. There’s no dancing. But other entertainment for sure.
Ciel does, and his staff that is… quite a couple of characters as well lead by our other main character the demon/devil butler Sebastian does get a lot to do.
And just like in a Christie novel all goes perfectly well during the lavish and luxurious evening, apart from the fact there’s a storm outside so all of them will be stuck at the Phantomhive manor until the storm passes.
Duh duh duuuuuuh!!!
Ha ha ha ha!!! It couldn’t be more like Agatah Christie! Of course, one of them is found dead, the richest, most important man even. And he is found dead in a room that is locked from the inside. Que our extremely intelligent main characters to start investigating the whole thing. I do like the twist there towards the end of this book with Sebastian. I hope we’ll get a classic confrontation as well towards the end of the next book. Fingers crossed!
This couldn’t be a more classic murder mystery if it tried. I REALLY love this!
It was the butler in the study with the fire poker !!!!
From the Queen's orders, Ciel is forced to hold a banquet at his estate for an a relative of the Queen. Everything is going great until someone ends up dead and with a raging storm going on, no one can leave which means the killer is still there.
I'm SUCH a slut for locked room mysteries and this was such a great murder mystery party.🤌 Add to it we have Arthur Conan Doyle up in here and we are cooking.
I feel like I know who did it but then I'm like it's probably gonna be someone completely unexpected. Ciel absolutely losing his shit at finding a certain person dead was fantastic. Even though personally that doesn't make any sense or seem actually possible but the story ends on a fun little cliffhanger.
Side note y'all piss me off so much anytime Ran-Mao shows up like thanks I love seeing some girl who doesn't speak or have any independent thought just sitting in the lap of the man who calls her his sister but seems to own her.🤨 I don't know wtf they got going on but I absolutely hate that dude and I hate how this woman is just his object he shows off to other men.

Chapters 38~42Phantomhive Manor Murders Arc Do you think Arthur Conan Doyle is as good at solving murders as Sherlock Holmes? Because Ciel has no qualm putting this "aspiring author" to work starting with a locked-room murder, as they continue being completely isolated by a roaring storm.
It should be noted that I've watched the OVA adaptation of this mini-arc, so I'm already aware of how it goes, but I appreciate seeing it in its original state. It's still a lot of fun, even if Yana's depiction of Arthur Conan Doyle is a jacket size and facial features all slightly removed from being an anime-ass twink.
Definitely wordier than other volumes but I liked this because this featured a direct anime translation. And it was featured in one of the seiyuu events:
