Across The Universe, Teenagers Join Together To Fight Chaos
Of Time and Magic spans two universes, many planets, and the high seas. It concludes the story begun in Maya and the Book of Everything , when Maya began her fateful journey on that train from New York to Boston and gained possession of the enigmatic Book of Everything.
Maya has gone over a cliff with an ogre. The president of the United States has been shot on a distant planet. Cinnial has taken over the Great Library.
With the help of his devoted friend Julian, Cinnial is frantically working to defeat Time and Magic to gain complete control of the Great Library. Meanwhile, the Books of Everything and the librarians are in exile, waiting for the right time to strike back.
From different parts of the universe, a team of teenagers comes together to help the Books of Everything and the Viola, who must decide whether or not to have her eyes peeled; Robbie, a friend from the Forest of Arden; and Wren, who has seen firsthand what happens when Chaos gains control. Maya's friends, Jay, Lexie, and Will, who went with her to Elferterre, have returned to Earth without her. They have plans of their own.

I really enjoyed the propulsive final episode of a fantasy series by Laurie Graves that, through the adventures of time-traveling, universe-traveling Maya, reveals the true nature of libraries and books as powerful and magical.

Graves has a remarkable imagination. In the first episode, Maya, a Maine girl of French Canadian heritage, is transported to another universe by the Book of Everything and gets drawn into the endless war between what could be described as Good and Evil. Graves introduces powerful ancient trees and a Toad Queen who agrees to "peal Maya's eyes" so she can seen into thoughts and feelings and help endangered beings.

I admired the page-turning yarn and became attached to Graves's characters over the four books. I was impressed that she could pull all the aspects together to create an ending that made sense. That was not an easy job, considering that some earlier characters show up for only a moment here. A glossary featuring all their names and thumbnail histories helped.

Between books, Graves made a podcast with a separate story about some of her elves running a restaurant in Maine (https://hinterlandspress.com/podcast/), and I thought the sound of her voice in my head enriched *Of Time and Magic* as Maya interacted with new kinds of creatures in the universe called Elferterre.

And what delightful creatures she invents, not only sentient trees and library ladders but people that are sort of half animal and have French roots in their names, like the shy, froglike "grenots." She also invents some mouthwatering vegetarian dishes -- elves do not eat meat.

Much of this book is devoted to the 12-year-old daughter of the US president (that's a long story) who is tasked with trapping the tale's most evil character with help from friends who are, like her, on the side of Time, Magic, and Chance (philosophical entities that require explanation).

I appreciated that the characters were not 100% good and not 100% bad, leaving room for compassion toward even the worst ones. If you like each book in a series to have a stand-alone ending, you probably should binge on all four because the first three end with cliff hangers.
