Like other books by Thomason, this is an immersive read. Thomason grew up in the early 1900s hearing stories first hand from his uncles who had served under Longstreet's I Corps in the Texas Brigade. Thomason combines the same writing style he used from his own combat experience in 1918 with the 4th Marine Brigade with the stories, accents, and slang he heard from his forebears.
The protagonist is an ordained Methodist preacher turned fighting captain. Each chapter is its own narrative featuring engagments at Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, and The Wilderness Campaign.
