When Savannah tattoo artists Riley Poe is ambushed by an undead enemy, she inherits some of the traits of her attackers-and a telepathic link with a rampaging vampire. Now, she's experiencing murder after murder through the victims' eyes. And her new powers will not be enough to stop the horror-or the unending slaughter...
Elle Jasper spent her youth buried in the pages of Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, and Stephen King. Growing up on the salt marshes of Savannah, Georgia, she was always fascinated by the city’s ancient cobblestones, eerie church spires and Gothic Revival architect—as well as the dark, not-so-publicized side of Savannah, both steeped in tumultuous history. After an education at Armstrong Atlantic University, she forged her love of Gothic literature with an active imagination to pen her own stories. She is now a full time writer and lives amidst the moss and shadows of Savannah.
No spoilers. Here is just my annoyances with the book as a whole. I'm early twenties and I got so annoyed with the whole "bro", "dude" nonsense considering that they are supposed to be 200+ years old. They really didn't act like someone from the 18th century. Eli especially for me was annoying considering he was very insecure and immature all the time. Almost every time they were together he had to establish his dominance and say how much she is his. Plus, I know already that you find feisty girls attractive, you don't need to beat me over the head with it. However, considering Riley constantly had to talk about how much of a badass she was or how she didn't need anyone's help, they really were a good match. I got tired of Elle Jasper constantly repeating Riley's inner monologue. The whole mindreading stuff was very annoying, especially considering they could just pop into her brain anytime. Why even bother asking her questions when you really can just read her mind to get them? It doesn't make sense. It would however make sense for any normal person to admit when they are in trouble. For instance, she is experiencing the kills of a vampire serial killer. Obviously, she wants that to stop, but instead of going to the vampires (Duprees) who probably would know more than she does about what is going on, she tries to keep it to herself.
Plus it seemed like the only reason Eli ever reads her mind is to get validation on how hot Riley thinks he is, and if by some random chance that she is not thinking of how much she wants to hook-up with Eli, he gets in a snippy fit about it. Granted those rare times include her thinking of wet dreams with Victorian and/or her serial killer visions.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention Victorian, he's also an incredibly good-looking vampire who possesses the body of a 21 year-old. He, like Eli, was somehow inexplicably drawn to Riley. First, it was because of her rare blood type, but after what seemed like two seconds, became forever in love with her. That last sentence was essentially what happened in book one, but his obsession carries over to this book. I have a weird love/hate relationship for Victorian. I don't understand his obsession with Riley because she is a whiney woman who wants to think she's a tough badass because she used to smoke weed and hang with the bad crowd. That doesn't make you a badass, it makes you a delinquent. I digress. I liked him because even though he was last book's villain, he's trying in his own little way to reform and help Riley. God only knows why, he geminately cares about her. Plus, I can kind of see him coming from the past based on his antiquated sense of love. Also why must authors insist on always having a love triangle? That doesn't help the plot and seems like more of a crutch to provide filler than anything else.
Honestly, I doubt I would read the next book. Her characters are too annoying and self-absorbed to be deemed likeable. This book would sit well with 14-18 year olds who just got done with Twilight.
Well that was worth waiting for.... Everdark simply picked up where Afterlight finished and now I am left waiting for Eventide, the 3rd installment next year.
Riley has some kickass moves in this book, her and Seth have their strength now and their tendencies are wicked... and Riley has more to learn...
I loved this book, Elle Jasper is definately in my top 10 favourite authors and I can't wait for her next release next year.
This is a difficult book to review and even rate. There are things that I loved about it, and things that were, well... boring!
This book picks up kinda where the last one left off. Riley was bitten by both Arcos brothers and she now has to deal with having strigoi tendencies. She is experiencing a sort of "detox" period andis taken by the Dupres to Da Island. She has some times of lucidity and times where she goes crazy and wants to take a bite out of everyone. So up until now I was enjoying the book alright. But this kept going on and on.
First of all, let me pause here for a minute to daydream. Eli is HAWT! He has come to terms with the fact that he is in love with Riley. For the first time in his whole existence. And he has no problem showing her just how much she belongs to him. Tell me what girl can resist him? Of course Riley doesn't and she just has to jump his bones at every opportunity. Which was fine with me ;) As a couple they are great. These are the parts of the book that worked for me. Their chemistry, their interactions, their connection. Loved it.
OK, back to reality. When Riley finally tries to go back to a normal life after she's been reunited with her brother, who only has tendencies as well, and they both been properly trained in their new abilities and the proper way of fighting and killing vampires. After there are a bunch of vampire newlings running around. But then Victorian starts showing up in Riley's head again. And the bitch won't tell Eli!
OK, I'll admit I actually started having a bit of asoft spot for Victorian. He is obsessed, a bit psycho, but he's tender! LOL
Except that's not the only visions/visits Riley has. Someone else is inside of her head. She starts seeing a vampire continuosly raping and killing human females. She has to feel everything that he was feeling, and seeing the terror in the victims faces as if she was there. But she can't do anything about it. It's as if she's trapped in the killers conscience. But how can that be possible? The only other possible candidate for getting in her head is Valerian, and he's dead. Isn't he?
So they are dealing with stopping a monster that's killing humans, finding Victorian, a group of newling vampires that's going rampid around town and surrounding areas. But with all that going on the pace of the book seemed slow to me. I can't quite put my finger on the why.
Onto something else I liked. New character alert: Noah!!! I think he's adorable! Dreads and all! Especially everytime he calls Eli a "Lucky fuck!". Luc is another favorite of mine, I'm glad we get to see plenty of him in this book, and I hope he gets together with Nyx in the last book of the trilogy. They'd make the cutest couple.
I love that this author does the accents for Preacher, Estelle and Garr. Those bits where always so much fun to read, refreshing at times.
However, the ending? Why? What a mess! For a smart, kick ass, usually pretty level-headed girl, Riley made a mistake going at this alone and putting her trust in a certain someone. Eli is going to be majorly pissed!!!! Oh well... I guess we'll just have to wait for the spectacular make up sex then! LOL
Everdark is the second book in the Dark Ink Chronicles by Elle Jasper. The story follows Riley Poe a famous Savannah tattoo artist who now finds that she is recovering from being bitten by two vampires; Valerian and Victorian Arcos. Unlike her brother Seth who nearly became a newling vampire during the events of Afterlight, Riley has the venom of two strigoi vampires coursing throughout her body, changing her DNA, and giving her the same enhancements that vampires normally have; heightened senses, lightning quick reflexes, enhanced hearing and smell, along with unreal strength, and a link to two vampires, one of which is an evil killing machine. They are being called tendencies in this book.
Riley is being haunted in her dreams and eventually in the daylight hours by Victorian who believes strongly that Riley is his, and he does everything including memorizing her, to get her away from Eli Dupre. WHY THE HELL DIDN’T RILEY SAY ANYTHING TO ELI, or for that matter, ANYONE ELSE?
Riley later believes that Vick is not the bad guy like the rest of the Dupre’s believe he is. Of course not, and I’m the new princess of Cambridge! So called good guys don’t do what he does in this story, including the ending.
Riley also seems to be connected to a vampire who is brutally murdering a bunch of women, and some men in Charleston. Later, she realizes just who the vampire is and what will happen if they disconnect from each other. (Or, so says the mind messing vampire.) He also goes after someone really close to Riley in order to lure her back to Savannah.
The author introduces a few new characters to the story, like Noah, who came from Charleston where the new killings and newlings are wreaking havoc in town. Jasper even has her own version of Fight Club/Bite Club with vampires fighting mortals. I guess imitation and stealing/copying others ideas is the sincerest form of flattery.
This was not a good story for me and probably comes out as I’m angry in my review. Ok, so, Riley is supposed to be this supper bad vampire slaying machine now, but she finds that she is unwilling to listen to anyone when it comes to her safety. She continually tells everyone around her how bad and sexy she is. She gets attacked in her own home, and refuses to call out for help which scares the crap out of her best friend Nyx. She believes that she is in love with Eli, but refuses to open her piehole to say so. He, however, is not shy in his love and affection for Riley. *Cliffhanger ending folks and if you don’t peek at the blurb in the back, you can wait till next year to find out what really happens to Riley.
I was really annoyed with not only Riley's character, but with the silly sayings like Chillax, Chillin’ and Pretty sick. What is this series for tweens? Are you freaking kidding me marketing this as an adult novel?
I would agree that it is a paranormal romance novel. Riley and Eli have some seriously steamy sex scenes tossed nearly everywhere in this story. I mean, everywhere. Much more than in Afterlight.
I didn’t actually mind the Gullah language this time around. It is what is spoken in that part of the country. After you’ve lived in the south for so long, you actually can understand what they are saying and follow the conversation without much effort. I also, unfortunately, get the whole Krystal’s hamburger reference as I was once addicted to those delicious yummy morsels as well as Krispy Kreme donuts fresh first thing in the morning with a tall glass of sweet tea.
My question is for the author. Is this a series or a trilogy? Previously it appeared to be a 3-book series that follows Riley, but after further research, this is what I found out.
About the series: Riley Poe leads the series as a gritty, unconventional tattoo artist-turned-undead-slayer after her younger brother is lured into a gang led by a pair of vicious Romanian vampires. In books 1,2,and 3, Riley, a dead-sexy guardian vampire named Eli Dupre, his undead family and Riley's surrogate grandparents-who are not only Gullah root doctors but hoodoo conjurers as well--stalk the underside of Savannah, Charleston, and a trip to the Old World as they track the deadly Arcos vampires to Romania. The story unfolds through Riley's eyes in first person where you learn of Riley's torrid past, her desires, and her fears as she falls hard for Eli, becomes Victorian Arcos' obsession, and struggles not to become the very thing she fights: a vampire.
Will be interesting to see whether or not the author eventually turns her into a vampire instead of allowing her to remain mortal like so many authors who've come before her.
Rating: Characters: Riley – C+ Eli – B Noah- B Seth – B Vick – D
Story: C Setting: A < I love Savannah and Charleston as settings for this series.
Everdark picks up again right after the ending of Afterlight. Riley has been bitten by not one but two vampires with the strongest bloodline ever known. She awakens at a detox camp where she has been for several weeks going through withdrawals like a drug addiction. Riley now has special abilities. She can run faster, jump from building tops, fight just as good as a vampire and will live for a very long time. Along with Eli and his family she now hunts rogue vampires. Her brother Seth also now has some enhancements after nearly escaping becoming a vampire in Afterlight.
While Riley is recovering from her attack she starts getting debilitating visions of horrific killings. Victorian has also become obsessed with her and has started visiting in her head again. Though not nearly in the manner as in Afterlight. Much more talking and less dirty fun. His progression from evil vamp to misunderstood and obsessive was a intriguing plot twist. He’s still creepy in his own right, in a stalkerish way, but not nearly as evil as before. Instead his brother Valerian’s soul reincarnated into another vampire is the true villain. Eli, being the overprotective one instantly becomes enraged on the encroachment of what he views is his territory. He sets out to find the person responsible for the killings as well as Victorian for daring to touch his woman…physically or mentally. I love Eli. I love his protectiveness just about as much as Riley hates it. I would get tired of him reading my mind so much though. A girl does need her privacy from time to time and it seems like such a infringement of privacy to be sharing thoughts not only with her extremely hot boyfriend, but also his entire family. The sex was still as hot as in Afterlight and I reveled in it. I wanted it to never end. Eli’s fathomless eyes are just so damn sexy.
Everdark still had tons of descriptive writing but I found that this one was much easier to read. Maybe because I was used to the style of Elle’s writing…or maybe because this book had more action and all the other stuff didn’t bother me as much this time around. I still heard about every single outfit Riley put on and every time the dog needed walked or fed, but for each of those instances there was a pulse pounding steamy scene or action packed scene to help further the plot. Oh..and between the two books I now know every song Riley has ever heard in a club or has on her ipod play list. Those types of things date a book really badly and they grate on my nerves a bit. However they do fit her personality so I am willing to overlook it…mostly.
I did have one huge pet peeve in the book. Several times Elle refers to the Dupres French heritage and one of the characters says “sack ray blue”. Now maybe because Riley isn’t French and so to her that’s what it sounds like but its “sacreblue” And I don’t think I have EVER heard a true French person ever say it. In fact I went and looked it up online and several sites claim it’s like saying all French people wear berets. Leaving it as saying “sack ray blue” just sounds weird and irked me A LOT.
The ending to Everdark is a true cliff hanger and now I have to wait till next year for Eventide to come out. *Hear me wailing* Why why does it have to be a year…WHYYYYYYYY. I want more Eli!!!!
I am an angry woman while reading this book! And I am an angry woman writing this review!
I can't stand annoying, stubborn woman. I can't stand lies. I can't stand fickle-minded woman/man.
Riley Poe is the most frustrating woman I've ever read!
Yes, I know she kick-ass. She has a wicked angel-wing tattoo, dragon tatoos and etc. BUT SHE IS DAMN FRUSTRATING!!!! I am constantly shaking my book whenever I read about her stubborness and etc.
In book 2, she has gotten her brother back and then she was changed. After bitten by the brothers in Book 1, her blood was "tainted" by the venom and had inherited certain traits of her attackers: heightened senses, lightning reflexes, unreal strength and extreme horniness!!!! >:(
She was trained to use/control her new vampiric tendencies and some kick-ass skills which irritated me.
Not to forget, she keeps dreaming of Victorian. The other brother who bit her and claimed to has "taken a fancy on her". Victorian creeps me out. Seriously! The seducing, the sex talk, the dreams. CREEPY!!!!!!!!
The best part? 1) She kept the dreams from Eli Dupré aka her boyfriend (I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY!!!! Don't she know how hurtful it will be? Yes, she can't control the dreams BUT she could have tell him right?) Oh! Get this. She gets pissed with him when he left her to track Victorian to finish him off so that she can stop dreaming about him. 2) She communicates with Victorian in her head and after a while, she "realised" that she is "attracted" to Victorian but not that kind of "attraction". Victorian is determined to change her mind because "SHE IS HIS". WHATEVER!!!!
Next, she is seeing visions of a monster preying/killing women and lastly, kidnapping her best friend in order to lure her out. I don't want to talk about what she did. AGAIN, it happened so fast and I couldn't link it at all.
All I know is book 2 ends with a cliffhanger because Victorian showed up out of nowhere and kept trying to drag her away claiming "there is no time", "I'll explain later", "I promise-this is the only way to stop him. To stop all of this". And so the heroine left with the mysterious man leaving her man aka Eli Dupré "talking to in her head" promising to find her.. wherever she is.
The second book of The Dark Ink Chronicles, “Everdark” by Elle Jasper continues the story of Riley a tatoo artists beeing attacked from both those Romania vampires Valerian and Victorian. The results of this attack if Rilley to have both in her DND the stigoi blood and the results for her and the people arround her are become deadly because not only She has a connection with one of the brother Victorian, causing problems with her relationship with Elli, but also because She seem to have a ''connection'' with the new killings it started to the town since she experience them through the killer eyes!
No dont get me wrong i really loved the first one and I really do like the second book as well. It was just way different from the first and what i expected really. Doesnt mean it was bad it was just different.
The second book had more more action. New vampire introduced to us and i got to say.. I was really anger and jumped from my sit reading all those paced full action pages (beside i love Fight Club movie who doesnt anyway?)
The details Elle putting once more is very interesting and very vivid. I imagine i was there seeing with my own eyes which it didnt get me tired at all (beside i have used to it from the first book)
Elle did an awesome job writing about the relationship between Elle and Victorian. I have ended up in a clue if he is dangerous or not if he really cares for Rilley or he simply using as everyone say.
The one major dissapointment to me was Riley and Elli relationship. Yeaaaah we do lots of steamy and hot and erotic scenes between them. But othen than that we had nothing.. We didnt had the romance we sense from the first book.. All we got was those interested - in one hand but pointless in the other erotic scenes Elli to run like a cute puppy behind Riley to save her (seriously why?) Riley to be unable to express her feelings to him but instead we see her more drowing into Victorian... Seriously?
The ending made my heart go faster for a bit and i am glad there was a tiny teaser from the 3rd book because seriously i would hang around wondering what on earth is happening after this cliff..
3.5 stars. Could have been an easy 4 stars but i hate cliffhangers!! Really enjoy these books and i would happily pick up the next one to read. ...BUT using a god damn cliffhanger to make me just pushes me in the opposite direction. When will authors learn...cliffhangers suck arse!!
Everdark- Book Two in the Dark Ink Chronicles Series This is one of those series that you are going to either enjoy or feel is trite. I fall into the enjoy category, and feel that the unique properties of this story far outweigh the trope genre expectations that are fulfilled. It is, however, most definitely a gritty urban fantasy and paranormal romance; meaning lots of ass-kicking and lots of sex. Picking up right where Afterlight, the first book in the series, left off—Everdark pulls us in as our main character Riley is waking up on “Da Island.” Here we fade in an out of consciousness as she is getting detoxed from two vampire bites with the help of some Gullah magic. I have to say that, to me, the Gullah element in this series is a large part of what makes it not just another vamp book. The voodoo-type element in these books is explored as fact and tradition instead of a splash of color as I have seen it used in many other series. Simply put, they are the good guys—and further a powerhouse that allows the vamps in these books to rise above their base blood-sucking-people-eater natures to be some of the good guys too, all with a relaxed, laid-back vibe. We also explore the idea of humans with “tendencies,” the result of a vamp feeding and not killing, or the Gullah concoctions that stop a vamp-in-progress transformation we end up with mortals with special gifts ranging from superior fighting reflexes to vamp tracking to an increased libido (that last a bit cheesy, I will admit, and not totally necessary as of yet; but understandable if we go with the concept that these “tendencies” are passed on from the vamp from which you were infected.); the idea being that some of the Vamp DNA co-mingles with the human’s and you have an almost dhampir-like quality to a human including an extended life-span and heightened awareness. This comes in handy when all hell breaks loose. The first part of this book is the getting to know you bit—training, and character development, filling out the strengths and flaws of our motley crew. We then add in freaky dreams featuring our quasi villain from the first book who manages to put himself in the grey area between friend and enemy and waking nightmares where Riley is forced to experience vamp kills from the point of view of the killer. We also explore the deepening relationship between our two main characters Riley and Eli; where we have the possessive aspects of a very alpha male and the independence of a feisty heroine. I have to say that this type of byplay has been done so many times that I almost look to be disappointed; I haven’t been thus far in this series. I think the difference is the unapologetic nature of their interactions. Eli is a possessive, dominate male who would like to keep Riley wrapped in cotton if it would keep her safe, and considers her very much HIS, and doesn’t share well. Riley is an independent soul whose first priority will always be family; who digs Eli’s protective nature even as she ignores it to go her own way. Usually this would be cause for much yelling and angst in a “you-don’t-understand” theme, I was refreshed to find that skipped in this book. They both know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and will get pissed off when they clash, make decisions that the other does not approve of and generally have lots of branding sex, but they respect each other enough to not try and change the other. I guess I liked that each was true to themselves and not trying to prove that they were stronger, softer, or more lovable to the other. The second part of the book moves us from Atlanta into Charleston and moves us from the training to the ass-kicking. We have “newlings” who are still-in-transformation-vamps and other vamps that have started to ravage the city; recruiting fight-club style and generally causing no end of havoc. It is here that we learn that our bad guy is none other than the baddie we killed at the end of the first book, revived into a new body, and that his brother, the one who has been sending our heroine dreams may be more on her side than not. We also meet some new good guys, the stand-out being Noah a Charleston vamp and Gullah guardian with mad skills and sex juju that has to be masked by a voodoo charm. The only complaint I had was in the ending of this installment; it cliffhangered. I would a fair bit more upset about this if it did not include the first chapter of the next book that puts the series in a much better stopping spot as far as I am concerned. I don’t usually read that preview at the end of book, but in this case I felt it was well worth it, as it put me in a mind to have enough questions to want to pick up the next installment without having so much frustration as the original ending to the book engendered. All in all I liked this book, and the series to date. I would give it a solid four or B+ on the scale. It didn’t re-event the wheel, or blow my mind, but it was a great representation of the genre and a solid book with character I want to carry on reading and a world that I would like to continue to visit.

eli and his bros and all have to watch over riley since she goes crazy and is unredictable cause ..she drank victorians blood. victorian will not give up in getting riley to be his.he knows that one day she will have to go to him for help or other things cause his blood is mixed in hers. riley and seth are being trained so that it would come in handy when eli's not around. victorian can get into rileys mind and talk to her both day and night, and he can send her the craziest dreams that feel as if its real life. now its worse, victorian not only is sending her thoughts but letting her see his vampire feedings as if she were really him. eli plans to kill victorian so that he can stop going into rileys mind and taking what is his. victorian tells riley that he knows her since she was little and he's watched her from afar with a desire for her. later on one night riley and nyx were drawing designs for their customer when suddenly three vampires appeared in her home out of nowhere.nyx was afraid of riley afterwards, but luc lead her home.i have a feeling luc and nyx might be dating in the future. nyx now knows about vampires and all when luc's parents and preacher explained everything to her.took it pretty well, no screams and all :P . victorian told riley that eli found him, but eli had to spare his life. noah has to have his mask with him at all times, or else when he takes it off then all women would come running after him. eli finally told riley why he didnt kill victorian, and thats because 1.victorian's mom begged eli not to kill victorian and that victorian was innocent all along, and 2.if eli kills victorian than riley would get hurt in some kind of form because she is a part of victorian-she has some of victorian's blood in her. victorian also told eli something interesting, that valerian might be alive after all, his body might have been destroyed but he found a way to revive.and thats why rileys having the killing nightmares. later on riley was taken outside by a stranger when she was in the gas station.he was a newling(newly turned vampire), and then he said "you're her" and ran away cause eli and the others came there to help her.but sadly, eli couldnt catch up to the newling cause he escaped. riley and the others have to go to a city to go to a club to watch the newlings and what their doing to the mortals.turns out, they watch the mortals fight to see who was the strongest one.riley and eli end up fighting others one at a time and riley beat all the mortals that she had to fight, same thing for eli. valerian threathens riley that he'll kill nyx if she doesnt meet him at a club, and so riley goes to the club and victorian is there and saves nyx for riley and then eli and the others are there later on also.victorian then uses his mind powers on riley and makes her follow him to his car, where he drove away from the club, and where eli and noah stands and sees riley get taken away.eli reaches riley's mind one more time and tells her that he will find her, he won't give up and let victorian take her wherever he is taking her. #149

Riley's entire life was turned upside down when her brother was almost changed into a vampire in the last book. In order to save him she almost lost her life and now has some vampiric tendencies that can be hard to control. She's different from any of the others who were taken as she was bitten by not just one, but two of them. She still has her Dupre lover, Eli, at her side, but when one of the brothers who bit her starts messing with her dreams and her mind things get a little strained. Meanwhile, a vampire is on the rampage in a nearby city and it's up to Riley and all of the Dupres to help stop him before it's too late.
In Afterlight, Eli and Riley were struggling to stay apart, yet wound up together. In Everdark they are so together that at times it got quite annoying when they couldn't seem to function apart yet each had their own major insecurities. I mean Riley obviously loves Eli and he can read her thoughts, so he knows all this. But, do you think she could say it out loud? No. I didn't quite understand that one. I mean I get that her life was rough and that she has commitment issues, but come on, the guy already knows. Why try to hide it? Then on the other side of the spectrum is Eli, who loves her so much he tries to smother her. He was so overbearing in his protection of her at time that it felt like a major lack of respect. Personally I think the two could be a great couple if they both work through some of their issues, but since they have some really hard heads, it will be one heck of a challenge. That being said, I kind of have a feeling that Victorian could potentially be a better choice in the long run as he seemed to be more willing to let her fight her own battles. Perhaps I am wrong and Victorian really is bad news, but I just think something has to give in Riley and Eli's relationship otherwise he will be looking like a mighty fine alternative.
There is no real clear plot or path in Everdark. It's a lot of Eli trying to overprotect Riley, then Riley making stupid decisions to prove her toughness. At one point I remember saying.. Enough already! I get it, He thinks she is a fragile thing to be protected and she wants to be seen without any weakness. Then you add in the issues of Victorian's pursuit of her (Which I have yet to decide whether or not he really is legit or has an ulterior motive) as well as the monster that seemed to have no purpose other than to torment and the book did drag for a while. I kept waiting for the big climax, but when the end came, I just felt like there should have been more. I'm really hoping the next book helps solidify things a whole lot more and has more of a clear direction then Everdark did, as I think there really is so much more potential than this one showed.
While Everdark didn't live up to its predecessor, Afterlight, I still enjoyed it. I'm hoping some of my issues with this one won't continue on into the next book as it did get a little frustrating at times. Don't get me wrong, the book was still a decent read, I just some issues with it as I previously mentioned. Despite all that, if you enjoyed the first book, I would recommend reading Everdark so you can see the characters progress. I have a feeling that they are all in store for a whopper in the next book and a world of change.
I did not enjoy this as much as the first, Afterlight. Things that might have been mildly annoying but do-able, become intensely annoying in this book.
Yeahs ::
* I'm having a hard time thinking of things I liked.
Nays ::
* Riley is constantly telling us that she is kick @ss. All the time. It's on every single page. Enough is enough. Because she has to constantly remind us of her kick @ssness, she comes off lame. Everything is described as kick @ss and sick. These descriptions are used so much that I'm starting to wonder if the author knows any other descriptive words.
* Then there is the constant reminder of how sexy and hot and kick @ss she is. Constantly, from ever character. Please, guys aren't going to tell their brother's/friend's girlfriend that she is sexy, all the freaking time! (Author's self fantasy?)
* Eli and Riley are constantly doing the nasty. A lot. Every time they have sex Riley is thinking about how much Eli loves her, how she loves him but can't tell him. It's almost word for word, every time they have sex. We get it already! Stop repeating yourself! (That's what I would say to her if I was to run into Riley and her kick @ssness.)
* Want to know what Eli loves about Riley? Her un-shyness. Seriously, he tells her all the time. All the time. Isn't there anything else he loves about her?
* Victorian and a mysterious vampire are planting thoughts into Riley's head. Riley is distraught over this and constantly thinking about it. But, for some really strange reason Eli doesn't pick up on these thoughts of Victorian. Yet, he reads everything else she is thinking! Major writing flaw.
* Sweet Estelle likes to tell Riley how much she loves Riley and thinks of her as her own, at almost every conversation they have. Do you see a pattern here? The author just loves to repeat herself and hammer it in. Over and over and over ...
* Semi Just one of the flaws you catch when reading this book.
If you can't tell from my above rant, I walked away annoyed. What's with all the repetitions? But with some skimming, I stuck it out and finished it.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, Afterlight, so I was beyond excited to get my hands this book. The chemistry between Riley and Eli in book one was scorching, and I was hoping that passion would spill over into this book. In a way I did get my wish, since Riley was bitten by strigoi her blood is not as addictive as it was before; therefore Eli could be more comfortable around her. However, I did not feel that spark like I did in book one. They are all over each other in the first couple of chapters, but it gets a little repetitive and I did not feel the same level of excitement for them as I did in Afterlight. I did, however, like watching Riley’s brother, Seth, relationship with one of the Dupres get hinted at. I think there is a little something going on there and I am hoping we will get to explore that little side plot further in the future.
As for the action, in the beginning there was quite a bit going on, so the story moved along well. About halfway through though, the book starts to lose steam. Riley, Eli and crew are in pursuit of the villain but nothing actually happens for a good hundred pages and I started to lose interest. I was also getting a little confused with Riley’s feelings towards Eli. Victorian keeps entering her mind, messing with her body and feelings and she is not always so opposed to him being there. It was just creepy how Victorian could control some of her actions and get her very excited. I was not a fan, and I am quite surprised Riley is not putting up more of a fight over this invasion. She does vocally say she is not happy with the situation, but I am wondering if this is going to be more of an issue in book three. Plus, poor Eli, he can’t fight someone when that someone is in Riley’s mind. I hope this is going to get cleared up in the next book and Riley will be kicking Victorian to the curb.
As for the ending all I can say is: WOW! The jam packed, action filled, suspenseful ending made some of the slower pace from before worth it. There was a huge cliffhanger that will leave you begging for the next book in the series. Luckily, Elle was nice enough to give us a little teaser for the book three and I think that will tide me over until it releases.
Overall, this was a solid sequel, but one I did not like it as much as the first book. The slow pace really just bummed me out and I am hoping that the next book will pick the action back up again. That being said, I still think it is worth reading and getting to see where Riley’s crazy life has taken her now.
The second book of The Dark Ink Chronicles, “Everdark” by Elle Jasper continues the story of Riley, a badass tattoo artist. The story starts when Riley is recovering from her attack by Valerian and Victorian, two Romanian vampires. Now she has some weird powers because of their biting and she tries to continue her life even if she has a weird mind connection with Victorian, a situation that bothers a lot her boyfriend (and vampire) Eli. Of course, the danger is more real than ever for her and for the people she loves. “Everdark” is way more sexy than the first of the series and with many erotic scenes. Of course, I don’t have a problem with this because Eli is super hot! The only thing that is kind of not so cool is that Riley all the time says how sexy Eli is and how wonderful and how lucky she is for having him. I don’t get this astonishment of hers, because I find her very good and with her character she could have everyone! Sure, she has some tough time when she was younger, but she is a survivor and this is something everyone should respect. I liked that the author before each chapter starts, writes some of Riley’s thoughts because you can have some further information about her character and her actions. In this book we can see more of Eli’s emotions and his possessiveness. He has some very good lines and a lot of scenes in which he is sexy as hell. Of course, I love Nyx, her best friend and one of my favorite female characters, because of her funny habit to hug everyone without fear (yeah, even the vampires she just met!!!!) and I liked Noah another vampire and a new character in the book. A thing I don’t really like is that sometimes there are many details, about the food, the music, the dog.. These details aren’t so bad but there aren’t necessary either. The second half of the book has a lot of action and the ending is a cliff-hanger, so we have to wait for the next one! Elle Jasper knows how to write a good story! It was a good read and I recommend it!
Tattooed tough chick Riley Poe is back for round two in EVERDARK and still reeling from a double vampire bite that has turned her into a ‘more than mortal girl’. The Dupré vampire family, including her new love Eli, are more than willing to help train her to use her new abilities to join the fight against the evil vampires. Be prepared for a lot of loving and a lot of fighting.
One of the highlights from the first book for me was the very dangerous attraction between Riley and Eli. Riley’s seductive blood type was something Eli constantly battled with. In EVERDARK, because of being bitten, Riley’s blood is no longer as potent which means no more fight. When Eli wants Riley, he goes after her. It’s still hot, but not as much. To keep the romantic tension high, Riley is pursued through her dreams by one of the evil (or is he?) vampires that bit her. Victorian makes no secret that he wants Riley and tells her repeatedly about his sexual fantasies.
A few redundancy issues struck me this time including the repetitive descriptions of the sex and fight scenes. I also was hoping for more from the plot. It felt a lot like most of the story was killing time until they could face down the villain.
Overall, EVERDARK is another good urban fantasy romance that builds on the excellent characters created in the debut and dumps a whole heap of new problems for the protagonist to overcome. It’s not as strong as AFTERLIGHT, but it’s a solid sequel. Consider yourself warned that there is a doosey of a cliffhanger in EVERDARK. There is a sneak peak of the next book at the end which helps smooth things over a bit, but you’ll still be dying for the 3rd book in The Dark Ink Chronicles series which is titled EVENTIDE when it’s published on March 6, 2012.
Sexual Content: Several semi graphic sex scenes. A sexual assault.
Riley Poe is tattoo artist in her hometown of Savannah. She works with her best friend Nyx Foster. Riley also takes care of her fifteen year old brother Seth. Riley is in love with Eli Dupre. They are on Da Gullah Island to help Riley, Seth, and Seth's friends overcome and accept vampric tendencies they all have now. Riley is still haunted by Victorian Arcos in dreams which she has no control over. Eli wants Riley and Seth to train with his whole family in case he's not with her for her own protection. Riley is being haunted with strange dreams appear to end with someone she doesn't know dead brutally. Preacher wants Riley and Seth under stricter protections from hoodoo magic can provide. Eli learns that Charleston is under an influx of newling activity but unsure of who the master vampire is. Victorian believes that Valerian is still alive just in a new body. Riley and company go to Charleston to be apart of Fight Club newling style. Preacher's cousin Garr helps newlings captured regain control of their lives. Riley sees a vision of Nyx in danger. Can Fight Club be stopped? Will Riley tell Eli she loves him? Can Riley fight Victorian and Valerian both? Can Riley save Nyx from harm? Your answers await in Everdark.
I really love this series. Riley is such a kickass character from the word go. I love how Riley takes charge of her life and makes no apologies for it either. Eli is the smokin' hot guy that just steams up the pages. I will definitely look forward to the next installment in this series.
Riley Poe, my favorite tattooed bad-ass and the love of Eli Dupre's, life is back. But now girlfriend has got "tendencies" thanks to Valerian and Victorian Arcos's near death attack on her. They are the sadistic vampire brothers that were raised from their entombment in Afterlight. This installment leaves Riley fighting for her life as well as her sanity all while keeping up with her hotter than hell vampire boyfriend. It seems that some of the newlings made by the Arcoses are killing everything with a pulse in Charleston. Riley is also dealing with the fact that she has become "possessed" by a vampire who takes pleasure in telepathically bringing Riley along on his kills. And to make matters worse, Victorian has become obsessed with Riley and communicates at will with her in her head, which infuriates Eli to no end. I loved this book. The story was very engaging and flowed well. I loved that it literally picked right up from the end of Afterlight. Ms. Jasper writes really strong characters with a story that is somewhat unique. Even her "bad guys" are so well written that they are likeable. For instance - Victorian. Is he friend or foe? I'm not really sure, but I found myself loving him and wanting to read more about him. I love the way Ms. Jasper ends these books, which leaves you wanting for more.
Before I write a review I like to mention what I liked about the book because if I didn't like something about it then I would never have finished it.
I like that it has a punk/goth atmosphere, the Hoodoo, the different mythos of vampires, that it takes place in Savannah, that she is raising her brother, that owns her own business, and can kick ass.
Now what I don't like is that I keep feeling like I'm reading a Punk/Goth Twilight but naughty. The over protective jealous boyfriend vampire, being angry at this boyfriend but melting into a pool of lust whenever they are around; thus never really standing up to him. Constantly having to prove how bad-ass she is and then get herself in worse trouble, thus enhance the possessiveness of boyfriend and the need to constantly "protect" her.
Mostly it is the weird love triangle and Twilight feel to the story that bothers me. I really feel that Twilight has taken over in this genre because people, who never read this genre before, became obsessed leading to the same style of writing.
Twilight did not do anything new except write it for YA and add a lot of sparkles. I don't hate Twilight but I really don't get what the fuss is about and I really wish adult writers would stop trying to copy the formula.
This series is pure indulgence and I know it; which is fine but I know it will not be one I will re-read.
I wanted to like this one but I couldn't. I was like wadding through mud and I had to make myself read...that's never a good sign.
Here are a few of my issues. 1.The plot flow in the beginning is slow...I mean really slow and rather redundant. 2.Riley is still making the same bad choices she made in the first book. The reader and the character knows she's not a bad-ass capable of taking care of herself, but the author keeps letting her act like she is. 3. The voices in her head from Victorian. He's the deadly creature who infected her. It was just damn stupid for the character not to say something to Eli, one of the few people able to help her. 4. The constant dreams sequences and Victoria talking in her head. It was again annoying. Not just because she didn't say anything but because she thought she could control it...NOT. 5. All the mind reading of the Dupre family. What's the point of having a conversation if all they have to do is constantly pluck a thought of her head and then we have to hear it again.
Anyway. Those are just a few points that bothered me and truthfully I'm not certain I'll take a chance on the next one.
Alright. So I'm a little disappointed in Everdark. The story of Riley Poe and her gang of vamps became a little redundant. I was in denial about how redundant because I LOVED Afterlight and was so stoked about reading the sequel.
Aside from the introduction of Noah Miles, the characters are basically the same...except for Valerian who is somehow inhabiting someone elses body and Grim who is basically the Preacher-man of Charleston to a T.
Everything else, the same. Eli and Riley have a lot more s-e-x, Nyx gets together with Luc, Seth gets together with Josie and Riley fights off urges for Victorian whose DNA she now shares AND Noah whose vampy super power is his sex appeal.
There is lots of training to fight for a fight club in Charleston, that you know Riley and Co. basically kick ass at of course...and lots of roof jumping and rescuing of would-be-vamps-before-their-quickening.
I see a lot of reviews have remarks pertaining to Riley's new favorite habit of swearing...I think that is kind of bad ass even if it is in Romanian. Aside from that though, I was kind of hoping for more character development in Riley.
Eli and Riley...WOW...just WOW!!! This booked just flowed, it was smooth, yet gripping, and it held me in it's grasp. I love the Dupre family, Noah and his gang of merry vamps and of course Preacher and his brethren. I love Riley, she's smart, strong and sexy...her actions have a tendency to get her in to a hell of alot of trouble but when you have someone like Eli in your corner you get a little cocky cause you know he's got your back. Do yourself a favor and read this awesome, compelling series. It will keep you glued to your seat. I thought about these characters and their story when I closed my eyes at night and thought about them again when I opened my eyes in the morning. I would love nothing better than to have this series continue well beyond the 3rd installment which isn't due out until 2012. I don't even want to think about it ending. I've become attached to them and I don't want to let them go. I don't know what else to say to get you to read this series; but damn it get it. STRONGLY RECOMMEND!!
The first 50 pages of this book were so slow I had a hard time reading it. Yes the stuff within those 50 pages needed to happen I just think it could've been done much faster. I only stuck with the book because I liked Afterlight so much. The book picked up and ended up being good and something I actually wanted to read but then ended in a big cliffhanger which I hate. The book held my attention enough that I wanna know what happens next. I really like the characters in this series I just think the book was really slow at times. I will read the next book since I am sucked in and need resolution but if Evantide is as hard to get into as this book was I won't continue the series.
Okay, okay, so I skimmed the book. So sue me. I wanted to get to the good *cough Victorian cough* bits. Mmm, so I have a soft spot for possessive stalkerish types in books. Anyways, it seemed like the entire story was in the first chapter and the last few chapters. I don't think I missed out on anything. SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
Riley has strong strigoi tendencies, Valerian is still alive and can talk in her brain like Victorian, Valerian kidnaps Nyx, Riley rescues Nyx, Victorian kidnaps Riley for her own protection. See? Entire story in three chapters. Oh, and throw in a lot of smexy with Eli and Victorian.
Sadly, this follow-up effort to Afterlight fell way short of expectations. All of the elements for a great story were there (hence the two stars), but the author never executed. Instead, the reader is subjected to endless forays into Riley's "dreams" and inner musings (which were random and rather boring). Add in the introduction of a poorly-developed love triangle (Victorian? Really??) where poor Eli is relegated to becoming a one-dimensional bore. *yawn* I do believe this is the end of the line for me with this series.
Absolutely loved this book! Think it was better than the first. Talk about mother of all cliff hangers. WTH?? Now I have to wait a year to find out WTH is going on. I mean come on! I read the insert for the next book. Let me tell you wow.. Seriously. Dang I hate having to wait.. Love Riley Poe and Eli. Ahh Eli.. just saying. lol Yeah he's that good.
