In these pieces, some in Spanish, most in English, 47 women born in 10 different countries address issues such as coming out, relationships with families and friends, political organizing and community building.
This groundbreaking collection, originally published in 1987 by the Latina Lesbian History Project, allows women to speak about what it means to be Latina and lesbian in their communities. Throughout, the voices in this book explore the process of self-commitment to a political struggle to end all forms of Oppression.

One of the most beautiful lesbian anthologies I ever read, Compañeras is really really powerful, is a book unique in a lot of ways. First, is the only anthology focused on the lives and experiences of latina lesbianas, had a lot of Puerto Rican womyn, which break with the mexican "hegemony" on this kind of works (I'm mexican), Second, (as have to be) there are writtings both in english and spanish (and a lot of spanglish on the way) so it can be a difficult challenge to read the full anthology if you are not latina/o. But also is a true reflection of latina experience (as latino/as the spanish is OUR language)
Definitely is a must read for every latina, but also for white womyn, especially white feminists, who have a challenge to be supportive for womyn and girls of color. Compañeras is the perfect anthology to look for latina-lesbian experiences and theories.

this book bridges the world of being latina and being a lesbian. there is no other place i felt more at home than in some of these heavy stories.

although bit dated and half in spanish this book is a must read for anyone to fully understand the merging between being latinx and being a lesbian and being both.
