PAIGE TROUBLE WITH LATEST ASSIGNMENTA joke. That's what most cops think of me, an expert in Forensic Statement Analysis. I catch criminals by what they say--and, more important, what they don't. The science of language and double meanings fascinates me, and if that makes me a nerd at the police department, I can live with it. Even suffer the contempt of hot homicide cop Nate McCall. But an odd statement from one of Oklahoma City's finest has triggered my suspicion--his words ring of murder. And proving it could silence me forever....

Maggie Price turned to crime at the age of twenty-two. That's when she went to work at the Oklahoma City Police Department. As a civilian crime analyst, she evaluated suspects' methods of operation during the commission of robberies and sex crimes, and developed profiles on those suspects. During her tenure at OCPD, Maggie stood in lineups, snagged assignments to homicide task forces, established procedures for evidence submittal, even posed as the wife of an undercover officer in the investigation of a fortune teller.

Drawing on her twelve years experience in law enforcement, Maggie Price penned her debut novel, PRIME SUSPECT. One week after Silhouette Books acquired the novel of romance and intrigue, the Romance Writers of America awarded PRIME SUSPECT its prestigious Golden Heart Award for Best Romantic Suspense.

A RITA award finalist, Maggie is the winner of Romantic Times Magazine's career achievement award in series romantic suspense, a Booksellers' Best Award for romantic suspense and a National Readers Choice Award for romantic suspense.

Paige Carmichael is a forensic statement analyst - she examines statements made by suspects or people involved in a case, determining what truths and hidden meanings might lie between the lines. She's in Oklahoma to deliver a workshop on what her job involves. After her first class, she is mugged, and the assignments she had gotten her class to do stolen. Other attempts on her life are made.

She assumes it's possibly the work of a serial killer she helped put away, who has escaped from prison and is now gunning for her. But is it really? Things only get more complicated when she's assigned to the murder of a councilman's wife, and finds connections to what's going on in her own life. Detective and workshop attendee Nate McCall (highly attractive, of course) helps her get to the truth. Plus, he's also the detective on the councilman's wife's murder!

Fun, exciting mystery thriller. I have no real complaints here! Paige Carmichael is an interesting heroine, confident in her work and ability to take care of herself. The book doesn't overplay her lack of confidence in trusting others when it comes to love. Nate McCall was a great hero. We're not simply told he's a good guy. He shows it through his actions and what he says to Paige. The plot is slightly predictable, but that's because author Maggie Price isn't playing any fancy tricks to try and keep the truth hidden. Everything comes together plausibly. There's plenty of action and suspense from beginning to end.

If I come across any books by Maggie Price should I one day go op shopping again, I'll be sure to pick them up. Although apparently part of a series, this can easily be read as a standalone and has no unresolved plot elements. It reads like a "proper" book I would read outside of category romance! (This was part of the Bombshell line from Harlequin that lasted from 2005 to 2007.) I really liked it (and it would make a great basis for a TV show.)

Found this while ransacking my bookshelves for more books to read. Had this for years, and thought I'd give it a reread before either donating, or keeping. Even though this is a M&B, and I don't buy or read these anymore (not since my early 20s), I quite liked this book.

Paige is a strong ex-cop, who has had her share of bad luck and hard times. Nate McCall is an arrogant detective who ends up dealing with the fallout of a seminar Paige is heading at his precinct.

As per usual, sparks fly and opposites attract. Nothing special there. However it is the mystery that she becomes involved in when a statement Paige examines from her class reveals hidden secrets, and an old nemesis comes to town that really held my attention.

Fast paced, fun read. Minus (or minimize) the whole romance angle, then this would have made a very interesting full length novel ;-D

Read 2007. What I remebered that impressed me was the attn to detail (even if it was a fictional science) the author used when talking about the fact that the character used such methods as listening or reading how the suspect would talk and tell if they were lying. I can't remember exactly the method they called it but if you LOVE a good suspense romance pick this up.

The story was good, but predictable. Also, the fact that the main character, Paige, was being attacked every five minutes started to get annoying. Seriously, how many times can a person take a blow to the head and be just fine?
