The first edition (1967) included laboratory tests. Laboratory tests were excluded from the text in the second edition (1975). Two new chapters one dealing with some of the Russian practices on the application of soil mechanics and the other on regional soils were added. Some significant developments in the areas of consolidation bearing capacity of footings pile foundations and penetration tests were appended. Chapters on soil classification permeability stabilization and expansive soils were expanded. The third edition (1993) was enlarged by including chapters on some aspects of earth darns stress path method machine foundation and laterally loaded piles. Chapters on soil classification shallow foundation and deep foundation were rewritten. This fourth edition is enlarged by an addendum on Foundations in Expansive Soil. The remaining material is the same as in the third edition.
