Susan Elizabeth George is an American author of mystery novels set in Great Britain. Eleven of her novels, featuring her character Inspector Lynley, have been adapted for television by the BBC as The Inspector Lynley Mysteries.
She was born in Warren, Ohio, but moved to the San Francisco Bay Area when she was eighteen months old. She was a student of English, receiving a teaching certificate. While teaching English in the public school system, she completed an advanced degree in psychology.
Her first published novel was A Great Deliverance in 1988, featuring Thomas Lynley, Lord Asherton, a Scotland Yard inspector of noble birth; Barbara Havers, Lynley's assistant, from a very working-class background; Lady Helen Clyde, Lynley's girlfriend and later wife, of noble birth as well; and Lynley's friends Simon and Deborah St. James.

Très moyen.
Il s’agit d’un recueil contenant 3 nouvelles pour moins de 200 pages.
J’ai trouvé que les histoires étaient fades et l’énigme trop simpliste. De plus l’autrice adorant faire des descriptions, elles réduisent de facto l’’épaisseur de l’intrigue dans les nouvelles.
En bref, trois nouvelles qui ne cassent pas trois pattes à un canard…
J’ai donc mis 2.5/5.

Three stories, two of them predictable and with very unsympathetic protagonists. The first one a bit better, but unfortunately dated – today the main clue would have to be set up in advance, probably spoiling the discovery…

Je ne connaissais pas l'auteure. J'ai trouvé ce petit bouquin en brocante et j'étais curieuse de voir ce que pouvaient donner des nouvelles policières. C'est un total fail. J'ai eu l'impression de lire du Agatha Christie bas de gamme. Bref, pas mon style. Du blabla sans intérêt pour moi.

Three short stories. I enjoyed the first one which had the kind of story I expect from Elizabeth George. Sadly the second and third had endings that you could see coming from the beginning, no mysteries here.

Första novellen är väll helt okej, 3/5.
De andra två var bara en ren besvikelse.
Novell 2 hade VÄLDIGT mycket historia som har en stor del i berättelsen men den hade kunnat framföras bättre.
Efter jag läst novell 3 känner jag mig bara som ett stort frågetecken.
Rekommenderar inte.

I did like the book, but I wasn’t very enthusiastic. It was fun to read a crime book for the first time. In the first story I liked the crime and I liked thinking about who did it and how. It was easy to read which made me like it even more. The second story was a lot harder. I got sick of the thoughts the main character had, and that the complete history about King Richard III was told, didn’t help. I did like the end, though, I really didn’t expect it. In contrary to the end of the third story, which was very predictable. I still liked the story, just the end was a disappointment. If you have just started with reading English books, I wouldn’t recommend it. But if you already have some experience with reading in English and you like crime, you should read this book.

Elizabeth George heeft een aparte schrijfstijl en weet je mee te nemen in haar wereld.
Dit verhaal geschreven voor de maand van het spannende boek is weer zo'n verhaal. In de weinige pagina's die ze tot haar beschikking heeft, schrijft zij een ongelofelijk verhaal. De schrijfstijl is heerlijk en de zinnen lezen makkelijk weg.
Douglas Armstrong wordt 55 jaar en bereidt zich voor op het ergste. Want alles wat er fout ging in zijn leven gebeurde in het jaar met een 5 erin. Als zijn vrouw, die veel jonger is dan hij, ook nog aanleiding geeft dat hij het gevoel heeft dat het ergste gaat gebeuren. bereidt hij zich nog meer voor. Maar is daar reden voor?

Kort verhaal uitgegeven in kader van de week van het spannende boek. Gaat over bijna 55-jarige directeur van oliemaatschappij die zich zorgen maakt over zijn afnemend libido, en vermoedt dat zijn 35-jarige vrouw een affaire heeft. Hij laat een Prive-detective dit uitzoeken, en dat versterkt zijn vermoedens. Dit zet hem aan tot actie ... maar dat verloopt anders dan verwacht. Goed geschreven. Met vervolgens nog een beschrijving hoe Elizabeth George haar boeken voorbereidt.

Very good read. From the first page onward every turned page lead inevitably to the climax. Older man, younger woman, suspicion, fed by things in the past that went wrong in years with '5' in them.
Douglas gives in to his suspicions and decides to take action towards his wife. Not very wise: she didn't do anything harmful AND he got caugt in the act....

This is a book of three short stories. Insp Lynley makes a cameo appearance in one of them and another is quite topical since it tells of a historian specialising in Richard III.
All three stories show how murder is the most human of crimes since it is often the result of strong emotion.

Three very short stories, all quick and easy reads. They were pleasant enough, but did not have mucht depth and were too short to really leave an impression. I recommend Elizabeth George sticks to longer stories.

Three short novels, only one of which involved the Lynley character. OK read, but not one of George's best.

When picking up the book, did not notice that these were short stories. Would have preferred a more substantial read although the stories were ok.

Three plus. Didn’t even know Elizabeth George had written short stories. There were four in this book, all with unsuspected twists. A good short read.

Een mooie cover die alles en niets kan betekenen. De titel komt niet zo goed uit in het kleurenschema, maar de naam van de schrijfster staat groot en duidelijk bovenaan. Elizabeth George heeft dan ook niets meer te bewijzen, haar naam alleen al verkoopt.
Dit boekje werd gratis gegeven door boekverkopers in het kader van De Maand van het Spannende Boek 1996.
Het eigenlijk verhaal is slechts 40 bladzijden lang. Toch slaagt George er (schijnbar) moeiteloos in om een zekere spanning op te bouwen, de lezer mee te slepen naar wat een voorbestemd einde lijkt en diezelfde lezer er van te overtuigen dat hier de perfecte moord zal gepleegd worden. Het einde is dan ook een onverwachte climax die het onbestemde gevoel van onvoldaanheid wegneemt.
Een man vermoedt dat zijn jongere vrouw hem bedriegt en schakelt een detective in om haar te betrappen. Hij is een rijk zakenman die privé bij een waarzegster op consult komt. Haar voorspellingen blijken in de stijl van het Orakel van Delphi uit te komen, maar niet zoals verwacht.
Het spannende verhaal wordt gevolgd door een woordje van de schrijfster waarin ze onthult hoe ze een verhaal opbouwt. Hierna krijgen we een karakterschets van haar bekendste personages.
En voor wie hierdoor nieuwsgierig wordt naar haar andere werk, staan er achteraan nog enkele kore inhouden van 8 boeken met Thomas Lynley in de hoofdrol.

Ce sont trois histoires qui se lisent très vite.
J'aime les policiers et les nouvelles, un combiné parfait pour que j'aime cette lecture.
Je recommande ces trois nouvelles qui sont agréables à lire.

Na minha opinião, é um livro okay.
O começo é um pouco lento, depois fica melhor e no final cai no mesmo sentimento do inicio. Das 5 histórias contidas apenas a terceira e quarta ('Nem sempre as boas certas bastam' e 'Lembre-se de que sempre a amarei' respectivamente) são as melhores do livro.
