I enjoy William Chalfant's books. His research is solid, and he knows the landscape about which he writes. As I read this particular book, I found myself revisiting my current map to see where the different events he mentions took place. His old maps create a nice contrast to modern ones and add depth to his text. This particular book is a wonderful resource for understanding the role the "flyover" state played in the development of this nation. It's hard to believe an international border ran through southern Kansas until you explore a book like this.
