Graphic Novel from the Bloodraven Universe

WIZARD

Wizard takes place in the world of Bloodraven, in the lands on the northern side of the great mountain range where Bloodraven’s ogre brethren live. Ten years prior to the events that brought Bloodraven to the lands of men, a certain Ydregi wizard explores the northern kingdoms, scorning the petty northern gods and collecting their sacraments.

WARRIOR

Rescued from a torturous death at the hands of the priests of a bloodthirsty God, Ferris of Nalvar is grateful for succor until he realizes the magical nature of his savior. A mysterious foreign wizard with an agenda of his own and Ferris finds himself indebted and attracted to a being that takes blood-oaths none too lightly.

Warnings: Graphic violence, torture, and non-con at the beginning of the book, that may squick some people out.

I thought Bloodraven was both beautiful and brutal but the brutality was offset by a sense of power and a surprising love story which was the heart of the story. It was one of my favorite reads of 2010. I purchased Wizard soon after I finished Bloodraven when I learned it was set in the same world but it took me until now to work up the courage to actually read it.

If you’ve read Bloodraven you know it’s not for the faint of heart, particularly the earlier scenes, but Wizard takes things to a new, nearly unbearable, level of disturbing. The first portion of the book is relentlessly graphic and grim. Murder, rape, torture and unspeakable atrocities occur in graphic detail in words and artwork. I can stomach a lot but there was one particular scene when I had to pause to wonder why I was subjecting myself to its continuing depravities. I’m still not quite sure why I kept going. I guess I was hoping to relive some of the magic that made Bloodraven so special for me. The brutality eventually ends and things calm down as an adventure ensues and a small romance starts to bloom out of all of the madness. But I don’t think I’ll ever get those earlier images out of my head.

You’ve been warned. It’s not my fault if you read it anyway.

Wizard starts at the tail end of a bloody battle. Those who died outright had it easy. Ferris isn’t one of them. He is taken captive and abused in the worst ways imaginable. This is the rough part. It’s awful. Because he is pretty and still in relatively unbroken shape, he is then passed along to priests to be used as an offering to their twisted god. The priests inflict further pain on his tortured body. As the final death blow nears, Ferris is saved by the be-horned demon god who proudly sports a mighty jewel encrusted phallus for all the world to see.

The "god" is actually a self-interested wizard and in return for setting Ferris free, he has some demands:

“Three things I will ask of you and three things you shall perform for the sake of your honor and your life, no matter the time, the place or the nature if the task. Agreed?

Ferris stared up into glittering gray-blue eyes and felt a shimmer of unease, of some great pool of powers that he could only sense the tip of brewing behind that gaze. Still, anything was better than the fate that awaited him should he remain here, bound to the sacrificial alter.”

He nodded.”

Thus sacrificing god knows what, god knows when, to god knows who.

This is when the fantasy, adventure and romance kicks in. They head for the forest, get to know each other very intimately and the violence is toned down to a whisper. I enjoyed this change in tone and found a lot of the artwork unintentionally humorous because one of the two were carrying around that valuable, over-sized phallus wherever they went. But just when things were getting interesting the story ends! Boo. I wanted a complete story but this didn’t feel complete to me.

Erckle. Once you get past the extremely gruesome and graphic beginning of rape, torture, human roasting and cannibalism the going gets much easier with a river trip and hot, graphic jungle sex. Be warned though that the ending demands follow-up which seems to be a long time coming. Lots of stars for the cool graphics which are better viewed on anything much larger than a cell phone screen.

I think that I would have enjoyed this book even more if I had read it before Bloodraven. It gives a tremendous amount of background in very vivid, graphic detail. I mean lets pull out every plug down and earthy. This story would have been a 5 if not for the drawings.

I read this immediately after I was done Bloodraven since they take place in the same universe. As mentioned, this book is extremely graphical and not recommended for the faint of heart. I had to endure and quickly read through the beginning, which was hard but well rewarding afterwards ;D It's very short and leaves you wondering about many things. Nonetheless it was a good quick read.

Hmm.. So did anyone else notice the incredible similarities that strikes Estalan as Elvardo? Such as their pale-blue/silver eyes, the description of Estalan's beauty that could be defined as a Ydregi, them both being an "outcast", Estalan not having a gift for healing just like Elvardo and not to mention, at the end of Wizard, Estalan's intials; E.E. Anyone thinks it probably stands for Estalan Elvardo or Elvardo Estalan?

TREAD VERY CAREFULLY......VERY, VERY, CAREFULLY. DIS B SUM DARK AND POWERFUL STUFF.

First of all, i had no idea it was illustrated to a degree, so that blew me away. It was apparently done by one single person, and i have no idea just how much time and effort it went into the creation of it, but it looks really good. I was pleasantly surprised.

A second surprise came in the way of content. I was expecting some darker elements, but this has taken it to a whole different level. The descriptions of torture accompanied by a contributing visual is enough to disturb people. A lot.

The only thing I can attribute to my resilience is the sheer volume of intake of manga and anime throughout the past years. They have as a general rule even, at least one betentacled monster chasing a scantily clad male or female (depending how you squint) character around. And boy, can those tentacles become frisky.

No really all joking aside, this is harsh and very hard to follow if you are the type of person that doesn't gravitate toward the extremes. Reading it, i came to the conclusion the author knew exactly witch kind of impact this work would bring and still chose to dedicate the time writing and illustrating it.

The illustrations are good, detailed, but not overly so. In a sense it's a blessing in disguise really.

The story follows young Ferris, a man fighting a seemingly unwinnable war against an army fueled by the religious beliefs of absolute and sheer cruelty. Such an army that gives a true meaning to the term- Death is preferable to capture.

Sadly Ferris winds up in an ambush, and gets himself taken alive. He is at the mercy of cruel sadists, and just when he thinks he can't take any more he is sent to die at the altar of the blood gods, where he comes face to face with the same pagan priest that captured him.

The rest, torture, sacrifice, escape, salvation is all embedded in a world that is not for the faint of heart.

Sometimes i go for the very dark novels, and sometimes i can't really stomach them. Depends of the emotional connection that is offered with the characters. I need that redeeming quality. I need that human touch, that salvation at the end of things.

I personally would wholeheartedly recommend this book, but for a selected audience.

This is a combination graphic novel with a novelette (written text) to expand the story. Although I did like it, it was not as good as her other graphic novel "Bloodraven." This is set in the same world, but takes place many years earlier with different characters. The story opens with the aftermath of a battle between two nations. Warrior Ferris is captured and the enemy take sadistic pleasure trying to break him. My main issue with the story was the graphic torture (both visually and written). It may be because there is also a full-length novel companion to Bloodraven that the impact of horrors done to the main character are tempered by his evolving relationship with Bloodraven. Here, the protagonist Ferris is subjected to brutal rape/torture and has to witness others being tortured (one resulting in a particularly gruesome death).

When he is rescued by Escalon, their brief affair is steamy but leaves a reader hanging because it is over so quickly. The main focus of "Wizard" remains the torture. Hopefully, the author will have a sequel (as she has indicated there will be more graphic novels for Bloodraven as well). There are some typos in the novelette, and the text in bubbles sometimes went to far into the crease, but overall this is a very nice edition for being self-published. Recommended, but NOT for the squeamish or sensitive.

Did I really just read (and look at illustrations of) pages and pages of graphic torture porn just to get more Elvardo?

Yes, yes, I did. I mean, I read the warnings and I know the author, and I'm not easy to squick, but... squick? lol. The later parts were great, because let's face it, Elvardo is awesome and just needs to rule the world already, and I was sad it was so short. But yeah, going to need to go obtain some brainbleach for some of the early bits o_O

(Favourite part? When Elvardo idly magicks up some giant fish for those village kids to catch. Big bad sneaky wizard! Heart of mushy porridge.)

Well, That was a quick read. Yes, a horrible lot of torture at the start, but no worse than Game of Thrones. 80% of the accompanying illustrations are gorgeous, 10 % are stunningly erotic, and the final 10% are just plain sick! The actual story was left on a cliff hanger, we really never did find out much about the Wizard and his true intentions, but he and Ferris were very hot!..i want more, sick puppy that I am!

Be advised, this book is not for those faint of heart. The beginning is gruesome, and the drawing shows pretty well what was done to those men. The torture was well described and left little to the imagination.
If can read past that part, things get better.
This story had an open ending, leaving the reader with questions about what happens next, but I guess we'll have to wait for it.

it was good. The book had a picture and they were drawn to the scenes.
I strangely like and dislike Elvardo, which is why this book played with my emotions. Especially the end of the story when my heart broke, these two were very good lovers🥲💔

Nice side story of Bloodraven with the dark lord Estalan Elvardo as MC.
This is also a graphic novel.
I'm fine with torture porn (the first half of the book) but of course the book is not appropriate for sensitive readers, for it is full of TW, violence and abuses.

Not many people are going to like this one (though I did). It's m-m and it's beginning is pretty heavy in some hard core torture fetish scenes. This isn't the worst from the author so I barely batted an eye (more like squinted very tightly ;D).

The dark hero (color, not disposition) is at war and gets capture and tortured, among other things. He's accidentally rescued by a wizard(who plays a major role in the novel Bloodraven), they have an affair, and the wizard has the warrior do all kinds of stuff for him. It was pretty good. I was not surprised by the ending since this is sort of a prequel and I knew where the wizard ended up. But in general, if you're a fan of P.L. Nunn, you'll like this one.

While I enjoyed the artwork and story, some of book was rather gruesome and squicked me out. Plenty of non con, torture and nasty bits. But, gorgeous artwork and liked the story. Best read on something larger than iphone or sony ereader as the text is small. iPad or buy in book form. 3 and a 1/2-4 stars.

I like reading novels and manga, but sadly combining these kind of story telling methods in 1 book doesn't seem to work for me.
So while Nunn has written another good story, I didn't enjoy readig it.

I didn't like it at all. It was like a horror movie and the images didn't help. I mean half of the book was torture after torture and it was DISGUSTING. I don't want to know that kind of torture. I almost vomited in some parts. They were that bad.
This book just wasn't in my taste
