Very complete description of Shaolin history, king fu, chi kung, zen meditation, shaolin arts, etc. Entertaining style of writing. Not really useful to learn kung fu (at least for me that I have zero background experience). Not recommended to any one that is not interested in learning about Shaolin.

Book Review- Book Name: Shaolin Wong Kiew Kit

I will give this book five stars, because I do Shaolin so this book teaches me a lot about Shaolin, but the way that the book explains is really cool. The last book that I read was called The Shaolin Workout, this book explained some philosophy, and some exercises. But this book explains the history, exercises, and philosophy, but not only that, each word that you read becomes deeper and more deeper. The last book was really cool but it didn't got so deep as this book. And in a part of the book it even gives you a map of the Shaolin Temple, that was really cool.

Like I said this book teaches me a lot about Shaolin, so that's why this book relates to my hero's journey. And I think that this book changed my perspective about the Shaolin Temple, because it tells the story of the Shaolin Temple but the begining is a lot more deeper but the last part of the story is the same. But that last part changes all the perspective of the story.

The last book that I read ( The Shaolin Workout), like I said it wasn't so deep as this one, and I said that this book (Shaolin Wong Kiew Kit) was really deep so someone that should read the last book that I read is someone that is a beginner. And someone that should read Shaolin Wong Kiew Kit is a person that has experience with a martial art, but better if it’s Shaolin Kung Fu. But you are talking about an individual person… that should be my Sifu’s, there isn't any specific reason but just for shere some book’s.

My favorite quote of this book is… The harmonious flow of chi restores a person's natural functions. By- Wong Kiew Kit. This quote caught my attention because I think that is not only for training, is also for life. In other words the quote says that you can cure yourself, but I think that is not only physically but also mental. My favorite chapter of the book was the one that he has some photos where he explains some movements, and I liked this because I could see other movements that are different.

This is indeed a "complete" book about Shaolin -- historical and legendary aspects; kung fu, chi kung (qi gong), meditation manual, pictures, secrets and tips, health and vitality issues, arts, weapons, etc. It is culturally interesting and well-written. I reserved some some chapters for future reference, specially the kung fu training parts, which I have no read. I do not give it 5 stars because of a "mystical" tendency of the author, which sometimes tries to give them support through a "scientific explanation". Otherwise it is indeed a fine and complete reference book.

This is very hard for me to review because I really like this book and Wong Kiew Kit is my Sigung (my Sifu's Sifu).

The book gives a very expansive overview of the Shaolin arts with a particular focus on Southern Shaolin.

The book cannot not teach you kung fu, just like a book on surgery cannot teach you to become a surgeon, but it gives a great introduction to the depth of kung fu, chi gung and zen.
