Up-and-coming golfer Cassie Burdette has made it through the hell of Qualifying School-only to land herself in the hell of a pro-am tournament. Teamed up with four doctors from a pharmaceutical company, she's afraid she'll overdose on their over-sized egos. But when one of them turns up dead, Cassie suspects these doctors prescribe to a very different kind of game.
New Jersey born clinical psychologist Roberta Isleib (who also writes as Lucy Burdette) took up writing mysteries to justify too much bad golf. Her Cassie Burdette series was nominated for an Agatha and two Anthony awards. Her new series debuted in March with DEADLY ADVICE, starring a psychologist/advice columnist. PREACHING TO THE CORPSE will follow in December. Roberta is the president of Sisters in Crime National.
Last seen in SIX STROKES UNDER, stepping over dead bodies sprawled on the lush greens of an Orlando golf course, Cassie Burdette is slowly inching her way into the upper echelon of ladies' golf - one stroke at a time. A narrow passing at Q-school has landed her on the LPGA Tour, and though she has yet to make the cut she hopes for a change at the ShopRite Classic, a pro-am tournament in Atlantic City.
Before Cassie has the opportunity to tee off, however, an amateur golfer partnered with Cassie during a pre-tournament round is found dead in her hotel room of an apparent suicide. Though Cassie's acquaintance with pharmaceutical employee Erica LaBoutillier was limited to the golf course and thirty minutes at the blackjack table, she is certain the woman would never consider turning in her scorecard for good. Despite the warnings of an easily irritated homicide detective, Cassie recruits caddie/friend Laura and sports psychiatrist/friend Joe for her own investigation.
A survey of nosy co-workers, a hostile ex-husband, and another psychiatrist (whose "professional" camaraderie with Joe is too much for Cassie to bear) uncovers a different side to the upbeat woman who appeared to love life, and as Cassie struggles to stay enough under par to make the cut on the course she realizes she also has to keep an eye out so she isn't cut permanently herself. Golf may be a good walk spoiled, and it's much worse when the sponsor's logo stitched on the heart of your golf shirt has been replaced with a bullseye.
No need to question whether or not author Isleib has made the cut with her sophomore effort, A BURIED LIE reads as well as Annika Sorenstam plays. Cassie's dry wit, matched with the intriguing premise of medical shenanigans against this green backdrop, make for a read golf nuts and mystery readers will enjoy.
A Buried Lie by Roberta Isleib is the second book in the golf lovers mystery series. Cassandra is on tour and has improved her game. A group that she plays a round with become more involved with her than she initially planned. Of course there is a death and she can’t help herself, she is sure it was murder. Not being one to stand back while the police maintain it a suicide she is determined to prove otherwise. All while keeping her mind on playing in the LPGA Classic.
Since I was not good at golf, I had a little trouble understanding some of the golf terms even though there is a glossary. Still a good read following Cassie Burdette as she has made from Qualifying School to a pro-am tournament. When one of the team members she placed with is found dead, Cassie doesn't think it is suicide and tries to find out what happened.
This is a short and easy to read “who done it” with an “Nancy Drew” feel. A Lady’s professional golfer, who’s making her entrance into the big league, stumbles upon an unexpected death of a new acquaintance through a golf event. It just doesn’t sit right with her and she goes on a mission of detective work to figure out what’s going on. If you like golf and mysteries, it’s an enjoyable story.
Cant wait to read all of these in the series. Im not a golfer at all, I do putt Putt Golf. Did not think I would like it being somewhat all about golf. Boy was I wrong. I loved it. Great stories and characters.
Living right down the road from the TPC, its hard to admit, but golf just isn't an interest of mine. This short (240 pgs) book took me awhile to get through, because sooo much of it dealt with the game. The mystery was intriguing, however, so it did have some merit. And, for anyone who enjoys the game, I think they would like this one more than I did!
Cassie Burdette attempts to make a name for herself on the pro tour, starting with the ShopRite Classic, where she finds herself investigating the death of a woman she just met - Cassie thinks it was murder, but it's nor closed as such. Not as much golf as I expected; this is mostly Cassie sleuthing, despite the detectives and her friends telling her otherwise. Surprised she could focus on her game with all the mental time she devoted to the woman's death.
Didn't feel too lost, not having read #1. There's clearly something just beneath the surface between Cassie and Joe.
