The first story is great action. The second story is very erotic.

This book includes two stories by different authors.

5 stars for TRACKERS by J.W. McKenna.
Wow! Read this if you want high-risk roller-coater ride excitement with a fright that comes while running and being hunted with the odds against you. I couldn't stop reading, I had to know what was going to happen. I was so nervous my heartbeat was racing. At times, I was breathless. Ok, you get the picture? The story is about Amy who is kidnapped and taken to a private wooded land with a diameter of 6 miles. Six rich men paid to hunt her. She is to be naked except for running shoes and gets a five minute head start. She is to find and get inside one of the two hidden phone booths. If she does, then she is safe and wins $50,000. If one of the men catches her before she can get to a booth, she gets $5,000 and all the men get to have sex with her. The hunters are armed with weapons (tranquilizer, bolo and net-throwing guns). They also have a dog to follow her scent and can ride in golf carts. I don't want to give any more away, but unexpected things happen, surprising things happen, it gets very interesting. There are some sex scenes, but the major draw of this story is more about suspense and the primal caveman type urges of hunting, getting and taking a female. The urges are seen mostly from the hunted female perspective. This is a wild ride. It is not typical of other erotic romance stories, at least that I've read. It is great for the emotional effects.

Data:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 94 pages. Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: four. Setting: current day San Francisco and an unknown rural area. Copyright: 2002. Genre: erotic romantic suspense.

4 stars for BESIEGED by Jaid Black.
So far I've read four Jaid Black stories about the underground viking world near Alaska. This was her first one, published in 2002. I liked it, but it was not as good as the other three, published later. (See below).

In this story, Peggy is an archaelogist studying Eskimo cultures in Alaska. She is kidnapped by Vikings who live underground. The Vikings' dress, culture and language is similar to that from many centuries earlier. Once she is there, she can never return to civilization because they do not want their existence known. The women in that society walk around naked or topless. She is forced to marry Wolf, one of the Viking men. These guys are constantly pleasuring the women. There's a Commons room where men fondle and have sex with the waitresses. There's a Dungeon of Shame where women are bound in cages in a way that men can walk up to the cage and have sex with them.

Data:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Swearing language: strong. Story length: 89 pages. Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: ten. Setting: present day Alaska (New Norway). Copyright: 2002. Genre: erotic fantasy romance.

Viking Series:
There are four underground Viking stories which I rated as follows.
4 stars. Besieged (in the anthology The Hunted)
5 stars. Hunter's Right (in the anthology Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down)
5 stars. Hunter's Oath (in the anthology Playing Easy To Get)
5 stars. Deep, Dark & Dangerous

This is composed of two stories, Trackers and Besieged. The concepts are interesting enough, one is a survival game, and the other a forced bride.

Trackers seems like a dark erotica for me at first because there is kidnapping of the heroine involved. But after reading the reviews that assured me that the worse is only on the beginning, I continued to read it. Indeed, the female is kick-ass despite the circumstances, that I cheered at her decisions to save her virtue from horny men that hunting her. But I can say that the ending part is a little unbelievable because under the circumstances, and it somehow created to dispel any negative emotion on the concept of the story, even with monetary compensation for the female.

Beseiged is the first book of Vikings Underground, that a supposed to be ancient civilization is in Northern areas taking captive females and coercing them to become their wives. There is only action scenes at the beginning, and the rest somehow defines up to the heroine's adjustment and her conflicting feelings. The hero is a bit soppy here and is super nice that is opposite of his supposed to be alpha tendencies. Anyway, it is a hot and sweet story.

this book so far is sooo funny! first amy gets captured, and jakeson, andy, dirk, and 2 other men were chasing after her out in the woods with guns and darts and using the golf carts, but amy bend the rules alittle and she won in the end.50000 dollars(i think)...but then, the host askes her that some of the guys want a rematch, for amy to earn 100,000 dollars if she makes it to the booth like b4 and none of the men chase her down yet, and amy accepts, but in one condition.... no golf carts being used and the guys have to run naked.
Rules of game:
1.guys that chase her gets to use weapons and golf cart
2.if the guys chase her down they get to shave the hair between her legs, and have sex with her, but in the end the woman still gets 5000 dollars.

andy and phil left, because they didn't want to participate in the game.only four left are playing. i read a review and it said the book has 4 *** scenes....im guessing that she loses in this round.and doesnt earn the extra 100,000 dollars.thats messed up and sad.thats what she gets for participating in it willingly the second time. This book is really forward and in the end amy and jake meet up in real life again and they plan on getting married and having, as jake had said, "Three kids". btw(amy lost on the last hunt-long story, and she gave her money that she earned in the first round to Steve(i think- or was it jackson), so that they won't shave the hair between her legs.

73 Besieged
Peggy was riding with Ben when she heard him say that SHE's being hunted by Stone dwellersss/S/....and later that night when she was in the safety of her hut, she thought about stone dwellers, and the only thing she knew was that there was a legend about it, but no-one knows about it, but Ben. Peggy took quite an interest in the mysterious legend, and you know what happens next.
Ben's sister sara, told Peggy that she doesnt want to speak of the Stone dwellers to Sara because her father says that if you speak of them, they'll take you away so that you can't speak of them no more....
Peggy later on, of course, sleeps by herself in a hut, which is stupid of her to, and gets captured by a guy named rulf and his partner. When Rolf took Peggy and was headed to sell her out, Geirwolf Valkraad, and his men, run and kill Rolf, and Peggy was trying to make a run for it when Wolf caught up to her and took her down.
Aevar-Wolf's brother
The people down there have a place where brides that don't want to breed to their husbands go to...a place where the men that are still single get to force the women to do whatever they want to the men to give them pleasure...and then,,,,, theres the Dungeon of Shame....the dugeon of shame has cages, where the famale is chained and blindfolded on all fours in the cage, and when the viking men get to go around and examing them, and if they take a liking to one of them, they get to enter the cage and do things that the woman can't refuse to them.
Ragnar-Wolf's cousin, who is going to mate to a 18 year old named Michelle(the girl that Peggy calmed when she and Michelle and other women first took them into a room for introductions).
Later on peggy and wolf bond, and Peggy later on gets pregnant, and yearns for her mom to see her child one day...so Wolf said that he's ganna steal her, so that she'll have to live down the cave with them and every other woman, and Wolf admits that the "dugeon of shame" doesnt exist, and females only go there willingly if their not mated to the male yet.
5 years later....
Michelle is pregnant with her 4th child while Peggy is with her 3rd.
Peggy is in love with Wolf and is really happy, as for her two sons which she and wolf named after wolf's oldest brother and father...
As for Peggy's mom, shes really happily in love with Wolf's uncle, and is pregnant.

If you can get through the concept of the women being stolen and never being allowed to go back home, then this is a fabulous book. I decided to 'go with it.' and not get my back up about her being taken against her will because Peggy and Wolf turned out to be a great couple. I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed Jaid Black's story but thoroughly disliked J. W. McKenna's story. The theme of the book suggested rape was OK, especially since the girl's didn't have a choice about it but were kidnapped. There was at least some gentleness in Jaid Black's story.

At first I really hated this concept, and the fact that the author would put her heroine through this ordeal.

But the heroine kicked ass. And suddenly it wasn't so bad.

Ended well...

Firstly, I have to say, the two stories in this book were very well written. Jaid Black has always been consistently excellent and, although I’m not too familiar with McKenna’s work, she definitely writes to the same high standard.

Secondly, it also probably goes without saying that there are some books you don’t want to get second hand… I wanted to read this quite a few years ago, but the new copies were hard to get hold of and the scalper prices were several stratospheres beyond reasonable. Just by chance, looking for something to re-read on my ‘Meow’ shelf, I recalled wanting this. One quick amazon search later, an affordable used copy was on its way…

I’m going to describe it as a cover that needed a wet-wipe due to visible residue marks when the light caught it. Perhaps, I’m hoping, it was kept in a kitchen? The discoloured finger-marks inside was a bit disturbing. Also, if this sounds like a copy you’ve given away or sold then, yes, I am judging you!

Ellora’s Cave used to (unsure if they still do?) give a book sample on their website, the first chapter, and I’d read this previously for both. Firstly there was McKenna’s Trackers, in which Amy is forcibly kidnapped from a car park, which seemed more like thriller material than fluffy erotica. Black’s Besieged had Peggy, an anthropologist on a case-study in proper-rural Alaska, being stalked across the tundra by some unknown mythical ‘stone dwellers’ whilst on a dogsled with her guide. That felt more akin to the light-but-dramatic story I was expecting. The quality of the writing lured me in for both and I certainly did want to explore these stories further…

Without giving away any spoilers, this was downright sinister. In Trackers, Amy proves - although she does make some questionable decisions - to be an exceptionally strong individual. However the entire scenario has more of a ring of a horror movie which, McKenna herself admits, is where she got her inspiration from. With the nature of the book, of course it was never going to go that way, but it actually made for a rather uncomfortable read.

Besieged, thankfully, didn’t give me the creeps. However, it was also not particularly up to Black’s usual standards as I got further into the short story. As I understand it though, there are more in this ‘Vikings Underground’ run, so I’ll be looking out for those (the premise is good, I just had issues with the execution). It does however still get a big thumbs up as sections have inspired me to get writing again, firstly with this review, but secondly on a creative level. The hidden society of Vikings is a great idea and raises a lot of questions about other aspects of this breed-your-bride-obsessed world… I can’t help but think there must have been/be at least the one gay Viking in the history of their secret settlement, and his supressed life is strikes me as exceptionally sad. That this thought is the most striking thing I’ve taken away from Beseiged means two things: 1) the actual story here wasn’t that memorable at all, and 2) Jaid Black has an exceptional talent for world building and I need to track down some more in the series.

Overall, I’d say read with caution if you’re coming to this book for something light-hearted but gripping in the erotic/romance department. Gripping it might be, but light-hearted it is not; although both written in an engaging style, the scenarios may well send the ‘wrong shivers’ down your spine... And remember, probably best to go for a new or e-book edition, ick ick ick!

Anthology. Okay stories, I liked Jaid Black's story more.

Trackers by JW McKenna. Women are kidnapped and have to run from 6 rich guys in order to win a cash prize. During one of these, the woman wins and agrees to a second hunt for a larger amount of money and everyone on a more even playing field. She falls for and has sex with one of the guys while the second game is still in play. Completely far fetched and the HEA was extremely unbelievable. **

Besieged by Jaid Black. Peggy's on an anthropological trip to Alaska and is kidnapped by these hidden Vikings who kidnap their brides and hide out from all other society. She slowly falls in love with her captor. Cute story. ***

"Hunted" Anthology: 3.5 stars for Trackers by McKenna, and 3 stars for Besieged by Black.
Trackers was really intense and had an original plot, lots of action and suspense, and really hot sex. BUT the man in the story said WAY TOO MANY "Um"'s!!! It makes him appear weak and stupid. Good short erotica to pass the time, and this novel could be awesome if it were expanded and some of the dialogue were changed.
Besieged was a sexy short story, entertaining as a quick read. Cute ending!
The overall IDEA is original and fun, but the writing could be improved.
The book cover is one of the worst I've seen yet.

Okay 1st story by JW McKenna called Trackers did not appeal to me it was okay but I felt rather disjointed so I would give it 2 Stars. While the Vikings Underground was really good and I enjoyed it to a 3.5 Star level I would say - just wish it had been longer and I don't understand how this can be the first in the Death Row series, which is what is stated at the beginning of the book. So in one aspect kinda confusing.

it was nice. but in my opinion, this kind of books are too good to be that short. it should've been longer and it should've had more scenes of the two of them talking. since the story is written as a short novel, everything happens so fast that makes it impossible to believe, for example, that she fell in love with him so quickly after being kidnapped and forced to marry him. it should've had a few more pages, but the plot was good anyway.

This book was horrible! The first story was just bad, but what was really disappointing is that this book contained the first book in Jaid Black's "Viking" series. I read these out of order, and had I read them in order, I wouldn't have gotten to book 3, which was the best in the series! Book one was just sex with a little of fluff to get you between sex scenes.

Got the book for Black's Beseiged since I've read others in the series. The hero is sweet and sexy in one, which makes the story very enjoyable as a novella. I'd give that story four stars. The other was a little to bizarre and didn't really draw me in to caring about the characters so I'd give that one two stars.

Funny how a reread can change things. Tastes change, I suppose. I had given this a 4 but with reread, I'd change it to a 2.5. The whole women kidnapped, forced and have to remain always naked, not working for me.
