To show their appreciation for the reliability and hard work of their postman Harvey Hare, the other animals plan to give him a perfect present, in a whimsical story of friendship and hard work rewarded. Reprint. AB. PW. SLJ.
The first of three Bernadette Watts titles devoted to the adventures of Harvey Hare - the subsequent two are Happy Birthday, Harvey Hare and Harvey Hare's Christmas - this sweet little picture-book follows the eponymous Harvey as he delivers the mail. Come rain or come shine, in all four seasons, Harvey is always on the job, making sure that packages and letters get to their intended recipients. Mindful of his faithfulness to duty, the animals of the fields and hill, led by Badger, decide to reward Harvey with a special gift...
I don't know, all told, that the story in Harvey Hare, Postman Extraordinaire really stands out to me, although I did appreciate its themes of steady attendance and hard work on the job, as well as showing gratitude when someone does something well. The artwork is endearing, and of course, there is a hedgehog here - something almost guaranteed to win my approval. Recommended primarily to those who enjoy cute animal stories, or who are fond of Watts' artwork.
A book about getting/delivering mail AND it features a hedgehog on the cover!? I could so easily fall in love with this book ;-)
I wish the story aspect had been a tad more creative/interesting (or told in a style that particularly captivated me) but it was fairly standard so I can't give this five stars. Still, as a kid I would have been just infatuated with the different sorts of mail being delivered to the different creatures. And I do appreciate the variety of seasons portrayed, too. There is a nice sentiment about giving back and being a good friend that, again, isn't exactly the most original on the bookshelf, but I was grinning and feeling all cozy and happy all the same ;-)
I did love the illustrations! They are just charming, warm-and-fuzzy without being overly cutesy or done in a cartoony way (not that there's anything wrong with that, but in this case I like my little woodland animals to look like a lot like real little woodland animals--with smiles and delivering mail, of course, haha!)
I’d have loved this book when I was 3 and 4 years old; it’s better than most of the then modern books I had read to me at the time.
The illustrations are very sweet and the animals are depicted wonderfully well, as are the different types of mail and Harvey’s present.
The story is rather slight and there’s not a lot going on, but it’s adorable. Basically, Harvey diligently delivers the mail to various animals, through all four seasons, and one of his animal friends devises a way for all the animals to give a thank you present for his work to Harvey.
The illustrations are definitely worth 4 stars plus. The story is probably worth only 3 stars at most, but because I really enjoyed it and because I’d have probably given it 5 stars as a preschooler, I don’t feel overly generous in rating this book with 4 stars, even though I probably won't continue with other books in the series.
Reminds me of my entire Mobile Service Department . Through snow, rain, heat, etc Mobile services and Harvey Hare deliver their materials/ mail. Very nice picture book.
