About the author

Adam Zagajewski was a Polish poet, novelist, translator and essayist. He was awarded the 2004 Neustadt International Prize for Literature.

The Zagajeski family was expelled from Lwów by the Ukrainians to central Poland in 1945.
In 1982 he emigrated to Paris, but in 2002 he returned to Poland, and now resides in Kraków.
His poem "Try To Praise The Mutilated World", printed in The New Yorker, became famous after the 9/11 attacks.

He is considered a leading poet of the Generation of '68, or Polish New Wave (Polish: Nowa fala), and one of Poland's most prominent contemporary poets.

Zagajewski generally evokes violence and transcendence as dichotomous realities but sometimes he implies we need to rediscover the latter. Top tips: Go Lvov, Tierra Fuego.

Sometimes luck finds you when you're not looking. The price of brand new poetry books in South Africa is terribly prohibitive. So finding this treasure of a book at a secondhand bookshop which I discovered by chance (or was it?) made me feel more than a millionaire. I had never heard of Zagajewski before, but reading his work for the first time was like meeting a long lost friend - there is a deep sadness and longing, but also great rejoicing in what has been recovered.

I love this book and will keep reading it again and again when what I happen to be reading goes limp and purposeless. Zagajewski is not afraid to confront politics, history, and the human struggle to find communion. His is a journey into long tunnels that open up to new possibilities. An amazing collection.

يكتب زاغايفسكي شعرًا يُعد مرثية لما مضى بقدر ما أنه أنشودة حياة، فالبولندي الهائل هذا يفلح في جعل الفاصل بين المجاز والتاريخ مومضًا دون انقطاع، ومازجًا بين اليقين/التجربة والخيال/الأمل بعين لا تكل عن زكاة التجربة والعلم، وهي إخبارهما بكل ما تحمله اللغة من إمكانات. ولا يسع قارئ هذه المختارات هنا إلا الإقرار بشموليتها وتغطيتها تجربة الشاعر منذ البدايات حتى منتهى رحلة الحياة، في ترجمة بديعة وترتيب موفق، فشكرًا يا دار روايات.

Once again I find myself desperately struggling to review poetry. I think poetry more than any other genre is utterly down to the person reading it, so me saying it's good probably won't be much help. (Though it is, very good in fact.) That leaves me in a strange position, as that's usually what reviews are about. For what it's worth, this a beautiful collection; it's filled with light and breeze, it's anchored in sadness and grief that I can't even begin to interpret yet, and it was totally in line with what I hoped for when I picked it up. The only reason it's not a five-star rating is because as a rule I don't rate poetry five stars until I've reread most or all of the poems again -- one reading is not, I don't think, ever enough to get everything out of a poem. I do have full faith that this will one day be a resounding five stars, however.

To my annoyance, I have learned that just because I like one or two poems by a poet, it might not mean I like the rest. Therefore I was filled with no small amount of trepidation here -- Zagajewski is the author of one of my all-time favourite poems, Try to Praise the Mutilated World, and that's some poem to follow. Thankfully I was not disappointed: the same sharp detail, incredible imagery, and mastery of language is present in all of the poems in this collection. There are none I disliked and plenty that stood out; there are many I mean to come back to and more, I'm certain, that I will discover anew in future. I am greatly looking forward to all of it.

nie umiem czytać poezji i nie kontempluję jej zbytnio, przelatując szybko przez kolejne utwory. zachwyca mnie jednak jej gatunkowa zabawa z językiem, słowem i kontekstem. znalazłam to w zbiorze wierszy adama zagajewskiego, którego liryka urzekająco precyzyjnie czerpie z prozy i próbuje nadać piękno temu, co osadzone w codzienności. szczególnej uwadze polecam utwory poświęcone krakowowi, bo odnoszę wrażenie, że opowiadając o tym mieście wrażliwość i spostrzegawczość autora oddały charakter różnych części miasta najwierniej. u zagajewskiego znalazłam też cenione przeze mnie w poezji motywy osobiste — te, choć momentami smutne, są wyjątkowym świadectwem wewnętrznych podróży i nieustających prób odpowiedzi na pytania o to, jak sam powinien się do pewnych wydarzeń czy osób ustosunkować.

to poezja o tęsknocie i smutku, o realiach powojennego życia i społecznych obserwacjach. nie brak tu trafnych spostrzeżeń dotyczących uszczypliwej codzienności, ale i wielkiej radości z tego, że życie trwa i można go doświadczać. to, co najbardziej hipnotyzujące w samej narracji, to bardzo cienka linia między metaforą, a tym, co rzeczywiste. na tyle cienka, że nigdy nie wiadomo, po której stronie tej szali skończy się właśnie czytane zdanie lub wiersz. satysfakcjonująca intertekstualność i częsty dialog z innymi tekstami kultury utrzymały w zachwycie nawet moją nienawykłą do poezji duszę i mam ochotę na więcej.

This is a beautiful selection of poems from Zagajewski's early work (1970-1975), new poems and three collections (Tremor, Canvas and Mysticism for Beginners). Poems such as 'Incorporeal Ruler' contain echoes of MacCaig's 'A Man in Assynt' and if you enjoy the poetry of MacGaig and MacNeice you will enjoy this collection too.

Przyznam, że przed zakupieniem tego tomu nie byłam wielką miłośniczką twórczości Adama Zagajewskiego- czytałam tylko parę wierszy Zagajewskiego i to w kontekście matury rozszerzonej z języka polskiego. Ale w tym zbiorze wierszy wybranych znajduje się co najmniej kilkanaście wierszy do których będę wracać wielokrotnie.

Nie wiem jak należy czytać zbiór wierszy wybranych, a więc do sprawy podeszłam jako student literatury przywyczajony do wąskich tomików poezji- od okładki do okładki. Z całości zapamiętam tylko niewiele i dlatego spiszę tu moją częściową listę ulubionych wierszy z tego zbioru, aby przynajmniej móc zapamiętać tytuły:

"I nie udawaj, że jesteś kimś innym"
"Jechać do Lwowa"
"W drzewach"
"Lawa"
"Pokój"
"Siostry miłosierdzia"
"Mów spokojniej"
"Karmelicka"

"Patrzę na fotografię"

Proszę się nie dziwić, że lista utworów jest zdecydowanie krótsza niż ilość wierszy zawartych w zbiorze. Po pierwsze, może to wynikać z mojej nieumiejętności czytania poezji - a mianowicie, lubię czytać wiersze szybko, zachłannie i dopiero gdy spodoba mi się jakiś fragment to zawracam i czytam wiersz po raz drugi: powolnie i ostrożnie. Dla raptusińskiego czytelnika Zagajewski bywa często dosyć niezrozumiały, choć muszę zaznaczyć że dzięki jego metatekstualności niemu zapoznałam się z bardzo ciekawym wierszem "Król Asini" Serefisa.

Po drugie, mam wrażenie że ze zbiorami utworów wybranych jest tak jak z książkami kulinarnymi - jeśli jest choć parę przepisów abo wierszy, do których jestem skłonna wracać wielokrotnie to wysiłek włożony w czytanie nie zszedł na marne.
