Single mom Paige Harmer is at her wits end about her son Dillon, who’s running with a bad crowd. She turns to nextdoor neighbor Cst Tommy Godsoe. Sidelined by a gunshot injury, he just wants to be left alone, but Paige is unstoppable. Before long, he’s drawn into their lives. Paige is going to need a cop in her corner, and Tommy needs Paige to bring him back to life.

Tommy Godsoe’s life hasn’t always sucked, in fact until recently, it’d been pretty damned awesome. Being a cop was his life, being a dog handler was his passion, but being shot during a police raid has put a damper on things. Days that were once spent serving with honor and purpose are now filled with pain and uncertainty. Unable to stand the thought of the pity he'd see in the eyes of his ex-fellow officers, Tommy has closed himself off from any and all contact, but much to his displeasure, the fortress of painkillers and bitterness he’s locked himself in has been well and thoroughly breached by his new neighbor who comes bearing dinner, and — despite his best efforts to get rid of her, won’t take no for an answer.
It’s not easy being a single parent, just ask Paige Harmer, she’ll tell you. Her son, Dillon, is a really great kid, but at 18, he’s not much of a kid anymore, and so Paige has to perform that tough balancing act of caring but not smothering. Dillon’s smart, respectful, ambitious… he’s pretty much everything a mom could hope for in a son, but unfortunately for them, his clean cut, boy next door image is exactly what Derek Weaver is looking for, and Derek is not one of the good guys.
Nervous and in need of something to do and someone to talk to, Paige takes dinner to her next door neighbor who, according to her landlord, is recovering from a recent surgery. The man is gruff, rude and clearly unappreciative of her offering, but Paige, being the strong, persistent woman she is, won’t take no for an answer.
Protecting Paige is the third book in the Serve and Protect series and is, hands down, my favorite! Being a parent myself, I always worried that my kids would fall in with the wrong crowd and get involved in things they shouldn’t, so I was able to relate to this story. And because Paige was facing those same things that all parents are familiar with, her character drew me in. Her strength, her devotion to her son, and her determination to do whatever she had to do to protect him…the magnitude of her love for him truly pulled at my heartstrings and made her a woman I could understand and admire.
And then there’s Tommy. Though we didn’t see a lot of him in the earlier books, we saw enough to know that he was an honorable cop who loved his job and the men he worked with. It was a little bit heartbreaking to see the bitterness that had taken hold of him, heartbreaking but understandable. I can only imagine what it would be like at 30 years old to lose any chance of returning to the job you loved, the one you’d planned to spend the rest of your life doing.
I've always felt that when things go wrong in your own life, when you just can't figure out what to do next... help someone else. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself or fretting over things you can't do anything about, devote your time and energies to the needs of others and everything else will fall into place. So, with that in mind, one of the high-points of this book, for me, was that when Tommy did just that... when he focused on helping Dillon and Paige... that's when things in his own life fell back into place and he once again became the man he was born to be - an honorable, powerful, caring man and a force to be reckoned with!
Okay, sorry - enough rambling!
The bottom line – If you’re like me you love romantic suspense, but sometimes you want the stories to be about everyday people, people who could be your friends, neighbors, or even yourself. You want to be able to relate to what’s going on in their lives, believable events and situations that could, for the most part, happen to anyone. So yeah, if you look for those things in stories, too, then I really do think you’d enjoy Protecting Paige. It’s emotional but not angsty, the characters are flawed but not stupid, and the friendship, the romance, the courage... all of these things combined have made this my favorite book in the Serve and Protect series and I’m hoping there will be many more books to come!
This is the third in the Serve and Protect series and is by far my favourite.
Single parent Paige Harmer is at her wit's end about her son. Dillon's a good kid, but he's fallen in with a bad crowd. She's determined to enlist the help of her next door neighbour, the extremely handsome and much younger Tommy Godsoe. Tommy is a local cop, and until he got shot recently in a police raid, was a dog handler.
I loved both Paige and Tommy.
Their banter right from the start had me hooked.
Tommy "Okay, this must be the part where you smile disarmingly and tell me you're some kind of Pacific-Heights type psycho and I'm never gonna get you to leave"
Paige "Good, because now wouldn't be a good time to talk about it. It'd ruin your digestion. Let's talk about me instead"
Tommy put up a good fight, but he was soon drawn into Paige and her son Dillon's life.
I liked the "suspense" part and it was a great fast paced exciting read that kept me interested and reading in one go.
3.5 stars. Solid well plotted romantic suspense read. Not edge of your seat but it moved right along and the whole thing made sense. The heroine had no TSTL moments. The cop was interesting and I loved the bits about working with police dogs. I wish there had been more of that in fact. It seemed like just the right level of liking animals and liking to work with dogs without being saccharine about it. the teenage son was nicely done. There were only a couple of sex scenes and they were nicely done and on the not real explicit side. The characterization was good and I didn't feel the relationship was rushed.
This is the second book I've read in the series and I will probably go back at some point and pick up the first two and read them.
I enjoyed this entire series. They are entertaining reads with likeable characters and interesting plots.
My one teeny, tiny comment.
NORAH! Where's Dillon and Rachel's story??
You know, ten years later or something when she's a cop and some evil psycho tries to kill one or both of them and they have to go through life-threatening circumstances. They could start out separately or together. They could have been married and divorced, or engaged and sitting on the wedding date.
Ooo! Dillon could have grown an extra eye and Rachel is unsure if she truly loves him or some girl named Chica.
I don't care how you write it, just please, oh please write the story!
The third book in the Serve and Protect series by Norah Wilson. I have enjoyed the previous books in the series and really looked forward to this one. I'm not sure why it took so long for me to finally grab it but I'm glad I did. It started out a little slow for me but it wasn't long until I got caught up in the story and didn't want to put it down.
Paige Harmer is new to the neighborhood and is worried about her son who will soon turn 18 years old. He has been hanging with a questionable crowd and mom doesn't know where to turn. So she cooks dinner for her crippled neighbor, Tommy Godsoe. Tommy is struggling with his injuries and doesn't want to deal with the crazy neighbor lady but you don't always get want you want. It turned out to be a very exciting and sometimes heart-wrenching story and I will most definitely recommend this book and series to anyone who loves contemporary romantic suspense.
Protecting Paige, book 3 in the To Serve and Protect series explores the story of how a single mother finds much more than she bargained for in the arms of her sexy and younger neighbor that makes for one of my favorite tropes of romance. 34 year old Paige is a product of the foster care system making a life for herself and her 17 year old son Dillon whom she has brought up on her own after her husband had bailed out on her.
Moving to her new neighborhood, Paige discovers that her neighbor, the taciturn Tommy Godsoe who is recovering from an injury to his hip makes her heart go pitter patter right from the start. Younger than her by a couple of years, Tommy is hellbent on isolating himself to lick his wounds both physical and emotional in private. But in Paige, Tommy discovers a force to be reckoned with as she practically storms her way into his life, making him sit up and take notice of her and Dillon and drawing him into their lives with an effortless ease that leaves him stunned.
When things take a sinister turn and both Paige and Dillon's lives end up in danger in a plot that Tommy couldn't have dredged up even in his worst nightmares, Tommy knows that he would die trying to keep the woman who means everything to him alive and well, even if it means pushing his body beyond its limits of endurance after the injury.
What drew me in with Protecting Paige was in fact Paige's character that is hard not to fall in love with. She may not be a beauty in the classic sense but on the inside she is a beauty that few can compete with. Growing up in the foster care system and later being abandoned by her husband of 3 years in favor of alcohol may have left its mark on Paige, but she doesn't let it define who she is and that's one of the reasons why I tumbled in love with her character as the story progressed.
Paige is one determined chick when it comes to those she loves and is protective towards and when she sets her sights on her sexy neighbor who could seriously give a Calvin Klein model a run for his money and looks like he is in dire need of some TLC, Paige bulldozes her way into his life, refuses to give him a chance to say no and worms her way into his emotions and heart just like that. I have got to say that Norah has a talent when it comes to consistently delivering heroines that readers can relate to and Paige is in no way an exception to this rule.
Tommy's character is a sneaky one I tell you. At the beginning he is grumpy, surly and right in your face rude because his life has turned upside down with a work injury from which he doesn't hope he would recover from. But beneath all that surly attitude lies a heart that is steeped in fear of never measuring up, of always failing to meet the expectations of those that depend on him; a remnant residue of a childhood spent with a father who had demanded so much more than a little boy was capable of giving. It is Paige who brings a ray of sunshine into the bleak existence of his own making and it is in her that Tommy finds a reason to try again, to not let the blackhole that his life has become consume him until he has nothing left to give.
I loved the action aspect of this novel that explores the use of canines in police work which is a vital facet of the daily grind of law enforcement agencies. The interesting explanations of dog handling, the full of life relationship between a dog and its handler which is explored to just the right extent lent something extra to this novel that made things that much more compelling for me as the reader.
And of course, worthy of a mention is the secondary romance that develops between Dillon and Rachel, a character whose entrance into the story opens up a lot of possibilities. Maybe if we are very lucky, one day, Norah might write a story for Rachel and Dillon. A girl can always hope!
Recommended for fans of the series, fans of Norah Wilson and fans of younger hero and older heroine romances. This one's seriously good!
While Tommy is wallowing in self pity, he is blindsided by the irresistible and unstoppable force named Paige. At first he finds her a little in your face but then when she leaves, he feels the void she left. He finds himself growing more and more intrigued by her sauciness and respects her relationship and trust in her son. And the more he gets to know her and her son Dillon, the less alone he feels. Growing attached, he can't fight wanting to help Paige out when trouble comes around, even if that means having to contact the friends he has pushed away.
Paige is a single mother with her own successful business and a teenage son about to go to college. After deciding to start over and move, she noticed a change in Dillon. He's been grumpy, has an attitude, and has been hanging with the wrong crowd. Paige knows deep down Dillon's a good kid, but can't help but think he may know why she is being left surprises and having other things happen. Not knowing what else to do, Paige enlists the help of her sexy, younger neighbor, Tommy. She can look past the grumpiness to see that he is a good guy deep down. Now only if she can look past his smoldering look...
What can I say? Norah has done it again. I think this may be my favorite in the Serve and Protect series. I was happy when I found out this book has Tommy in it. We saw a little preview of him in Saving Grace so I was happy he got his own book.
I loved Tommy and Paige together. Tommy was such a pitiful grump at the beginning of the book, you couldn't help but want to jump right in the pages and help him. Paige literally invited herself in and took care of him without even asking him if it was ok. I like that about her. She is a take charge woman that knows what should be done. They balance each other out perfectly. I also really enjoyed that Norah included a couple other first person views of a couple other characters. It made the story that much more interesting. Not to mention the minor little love story thrown in there.
So would I recommend this book you ask? Why hell yes!! I recommend the whole series as a matter of fact. I have read a lot of books and you won't find too many books that are written well but Norah always knocks it out of the park! :)
3.75, Again another enjoyable story. I really like Norah Wilson's style of writing, especially her use of the english language. Love to look up words that I don't see often. She has an amazing vocabulary. This is a sweet but touching story about three people trying desperately to encapsulate their deepest emotions from further hurt. Good dynamics between characters and the plot was well thought out. Despite the hot cover, steam level is minimum. Light and fast paced as the others in the series, nothing earth shattering and no lingering once I was done, but still kept my attention and never slumped into the rambling filler to increase the page count. The chemistry between Tommy and Paige is not as strong as it could have been, and Dillion was just outside of having real depth. The story of his saving the two kids was introduced too late in the book to help with the construction of his personality, and he wasn't given enough of his own view point to make him a bit more complicated. Same with Rachel, she should have been introduced a bit earlier on. I think there was opportunity for a lot more drama if the author would have liked to take it up a notch, she definitely has the talent. I will absolutely be reading more from her library, I would love to see her talent used to a higher ability. Overall it was a good series, could have used more intensity and angst for me to highly recommend, but for light, fast, well written stories I would say it's worth a try.
Third in the series this story continues giving you tidbits about the characters in the previous books while guiding you into the life of injured Constable Tommy Godsoe and his neighbors Paige and Dillon Harmer. The story begins with a hint of what is to come, whetting your appetite, while immediately dropping you into Tommy's struggle with injuries incurred while on the job! Ms. Wilson keeps you hopping trying to figure out just who is in danger and what might the culprit be truly after. In the end she tells a complete tale...fleshing out all of the characters into real people you feel for and root for to succeed and gain the victory! Loved the bravery and compassion exhibited by the characters and their dedication to doing right, yet showing their vulnerable sides.
Ms. Wilson never fails to draw you into her stories and give you a glimpse of her characters that causes you to invest yourself in them. I love when an Author writes the characters so well you laugh, cry, get angry on their behalf, hurt for them when they hurting and rejoice with them in the end!
I'm probably not really going to say much about this either because it was just a read so I could wind down with all the stuff going on with my life at the time. (It was Homecoming week.) This was a cute read. As the same with the previous book in this series, the book was kind of predictable. I really liked the romance between Paige and Tommy it was pretty adorable. I loved how even though Tommy was badly injured he did whatever it took to take care of Paige. I found Dillon to be extremely cute! This book was a lot of fun to read. I was really hoping for a sequel to this book but I guess not. The series has ended folks!
Best of the series, although I liked them all. Tommy is a really appealing hero. He has a lot of bitterness in the loss of his career, but somehow his underlying goodness makes the reader want to hug him instead of giving him a kick in the pants. His attention to Paige's teen age son is one of the early ways his sweeter nature is revealed and the revelation of his nature continues through the book. Paige is a wonderful heroine and a good match for Tommy's underlying caring personality. I liked the parallel teen romance - somethings a second couple is distracting, but this one was delightful.
This was an excellent read. I loved this series and stayed up much to late only going to read one more page.Norah Wilson has a way of writting that holds your attention and can't wait to read more. I have read quite a few of her books and can't wait to read more.
My favorite of the series so far! Love a wounded, broody hero and a strong, smart heroine and that's what we get with Tommy and Paige. Great story arc; appreciated the multiple POV's. Would love a future story about Dillon and Rachel!!
This story introduces us to Tommy Godsoe, a K9 Unit Policeman who has recently been injured in the line of duty and is struggling with both the mental and physical hardships of being unable to work in a job he clearly loves and is very skilled at. His new neighbour, Paige Harmer, has decided to take him under her wing and assist him as much as she can, even if that only results in supplying him with healthy nourishment on a daily basis. When Paige's son Dillon, whom she assumes is in the same age bracket as Tommy based only on appearances, starts associating with the wrong crowd and his personality starts changing, Paige seeks Tommy's assistance in bringing Dillon back from a precarious future. She had hoped to improve her son's attitude and bring back the boy she had always known lived within. What she hadn't envisaged was her growing attraction to the moody, younger neighbour. This story has wonderful characters and follows on well from the two previous books in the series. The author has clearly done her research into police duties, hazards and mental health issues following injuries whilst on duty. She has covered all of this very well so the reader understands exactly how Tommy feels and his never ending frustrations with his new limitations. One aspect I was surprised about however was the way the character Ray 'Razor' Morgan was depicted in this book. I loved him in both Quigg's and his own story, but this time he was depicted as a slightly negative, aggressive person. He didn't come across that way to me at all prior to this story, so that would be the only negative to come out of this book from my viewpoint. I still love his character! Highly recommended.
Quotes: I’m not qualified to model anything else.” “Sure, you are.” He glared at her. “Right. What would you have me follow with? Safe sex? Time-tested cures for a hangover?” She lifted her chin, green eyes sparking. “Why not? Whether I like it or not, those are things a young man has to learn.” “How about the Tommy Godsoe catch-and-release approach to dating? No? You don’t like that one? How about landing your buddy in an IAD shit-storm out of sheer carelessness?”
“That crap about resenting Cleo’s claim on his time? That was a total crock. That kid of yours has more tells than a preacher in a whorehouse.”
Patel, the jerk, had gravely presented his diagnosis—syncope resulting from an exaggerated respiratory response, leading to ventilation exceeding metabolic demands, resulting in hemodynamic and chemical changes. When Tommy’d looked at him blankly, he’d laughed and said, “Relax, Tommy. You hyperventilated and fainted. At least we’re pretty sure that’s what happened. But we’d like to watch you for a while to rule out cardiogenic causes.” And now, here he lay, confronting the fact that in layman’s terms, he’d been scared shitless.
Best of the Serve and Protect series so far, in my opinion. Constable Tommy Godsoe has lost his livelihood after being shot. He can no longer be a K9 handler because of the injuries and is resigning from the Police Force, as well as from life. His next-door neighbor, Paige, blows into his life and literally changes everything. She is a single mom with an 18-year-old son, and she fears for him every day. Tommy has no interest in them but is forced to take an interest after several unsavory things happen to Paige and Dillon.
The incidents are investigated by Tommy, and then by his friends on the Force, Razor and Quigg. Dillon has stumbled into something bad, and Paige is so afraid that she will lose him that she clings to Tommy as her anchor.
Tommy finds out that he still wants to live, and love, and have a family that loves him back.
Love this series! Get reacquainted with some favorite people from earlier books in the Serve and Protect books while meeting Tommy Godsoe. He was shot in the line of duty and is now home recovering from his injury. He meets Paige, a single mom, and her teenage son, Dillon, who share his duplex. When Dillon gets in trouble, Tommy attempts to help the boy. Then it looks like Paige is the target instead. Pretty soon she gets kidnapped, Dillon is AWOL, and they find out a terrorist plot has put more than just a mother and son in danger. Lots of excitement, plenty of twists and turns along the way. In the midst of everything going on, Tommy and Paige still manage to fall in love. Highly recommend!
"Hey, didn't I see Dillon and Rachel?" "I sent them off to the barn to see the pups." He pulled back, cocking an eyebrow. "You sent them? As in, wanting to get rid of them?" "Yeah, I didn't want any wise cracks from the peanut gallery when I asked you to marry me." His face went blank. " You're asking me to marry you?" She blinked back tears. "Hey, if you're tempted to turn me down eight or nine times before you accept, I'll totally understand. I mean, it would only be fair. Just so you know I'm not going to stop ask —" Her words were cut off by his kiss, fierce and triumphant. When he let her breath again, she said, "Was that a yes?" His laugh rang out, clear and joyous. "Baby, that's a hell, yes."
3.5 stars. Good murder, suspense, next door neighbour romance. Paige, hard working single mum raising her son Dillon and the gruff and moody ex-police dog handler Tommy next door. Their is an attraction there when they first met but both parties do everything to bury it, but the more time they spend together the more they realise that it's real and could be something. The drama starts and you get stuck in to the suspense part, really absorbing and you get to hear from the the two main guys, Ray and John from the first two books. I loved Dillon and especially Rachel his girlfriend, he was so honourable and she was feisty as hell!, great couple. Great little series, give it a go.
Perfect blending of humor and suspense. What starts out as a humorous meeting between two neighbors, one a angry self pitying ex-cop and one a chatty no boundaries single mom turns into an intense full suspense.
Tommy's scenes were almost heartbreaking. To have the thing you love the most - his job as a K9 officer - suddenly ended with a bullet. He needed Paige and from their first meeting you are rooting for them both.
The additional story line of her son Dillon and his problems that brings all the suspense added the enjoy ability to this book.
I love how Paige literally blows into Tommy's life at a time he needed it. Both characters are likeable, although Tommy is a bit gruff in the beginning, but for a good reason. It was fun reading about Paige inserting herself in Tommy's life, whether he wanted her there or not. I had read this book first, rather than in order by mistake. This book has action, suspense, and romance with a HEA. Have enjoyed many Norah Wilson's books. Looking forward to reading more.
I liked this one a lot! I liked the theme of older woman/younger man, and founf Paige and Tommy a great couple: loved Paige's son Dillon, liked Dillon's friend Rachel with her tattoos and piercings, and loved to meet with Razor and Quigg again. This one has suspense from the beginning of the book, so I found it better written than the others. The only thing I didn't like is that I would have liked a longer ending.
I loved this book. It was very hard to put down. The characters of Paige and Tommy were very believable. You could tell that Paige was a very good Mother and interested in everything her son was involved in. Dillon really showed that he had an excellent upbringing and was was so afraid for his Mother. It really showed how young people can be tempted and how strong they had to be to stay out of trouble. I think , if you love mystery and intrigue, that you will also love this book.
