Alberto Toso Fei descends from an ancient family of glassmasters in Murano, and is an expert on the history and the mysteries of Venice. He is a journalist and has written a series of books that constitute an anthology of mystery in Venice and the lagoon.

The most interesting thing about this book is that it is not simply a collection of ghost stories, but a collection of ghost walks. The author provides detailed maps of Venice, and creates routes through the old city based not on famous landmarks, but on cryptic vestiges (a worn carving, an ancient statue in a wall) that act as prostheses for the tales. These stories are meant to be experienced where they happened, under the fog and moonlight of a crumbling city. For those not lucky enough to go to Venice, the book is graced with ghostly, evocative black and white photographs printed as black on silver. Very tasteful, very creepy.

Più che da leggere in salotto, da portarsi nello zaino quando si va a Venezia. Da tirar fuori e leggere sul posto, lasciandosi avvolgere dalle storie raccontate.
Una cosa è secondo me insopportabile in questo libro, il fatto che non sappiamo quante delle storie che vengono raccontate sono leggende e quante sono storie create dall'autore. Non sappiamo nemmeno quanto le leggende siano rielaborate dalla fantasia dell'autore.

A distanza di tempo ho cambiato radicalmente opinione. L'immagine che abbiamo di Venezia dipende dalle storie che sentiamo e che raccontiamo. Voler separare quello che è vero da quello che è falso sarebbe una inutile pedanteria. In ogni cosa inventata c'è qualcosa di vero e in ogni cosa vera c'è qualcosa di inventato. E forse i miti, i sogni e le leggende contengono più verità dei fatti.

Éste libro es probablemente uno de los mejores souvenirs que podrías llevarte de Venecia. No sólo por su cuidada edición, y la elección de la fotografía que ayuda a ilustrar, sino también por cómo está pensado. Plantea 4 recorridos o "freetours" por diferentes barrios populares de la ciudad. Añadiendo paradas, explicando detalles históricos sobre las estatuas, iglesias, frescos. Y aprovecha ése dato histórico para narrar una leyenda popular veneciana de terror.
Tuve la mala suerte de no leerlo durante el viaje allí, pero creo que es una joyita para dar paseos por la zona. Me dí cuenta tras leerlo, que hay mil detalles por los que volvería a visitar la ciudad!

Nice little volume that is like a walking tour of Venice and tells you all the folk tales and ghost stories connected with specific places. Might be worth your time if you are interested in the subject, I read it in preparation of a visit, but did not do this kind of walking tour while there. There's lots of new vocabulary in this volume if you are not familiar with the terms for streets and allies in Venice- corso, calle, campo, etc. but interesting enough to help you touch on some of the history of the place.

A good collection of interesting Venetian folklore and ghost stories, as well as sprinkled bits of interesting history related to the city. The only reason I took a star off is that the directions can be unclear if you are using it as a walks book, and the translation is -in a few places - confusing. Overall, though, very much worth it for the stories and interesting history.

Una guida sul lato più lugubre e nascosto della serenissima, zeppa di storie e leggende interessanti, raccontate molto bene. Mi è piaciuta molto la scelta di creare dei veri e propri itinerari, guidando il lettore attraverso diversi sestieri passo per passo, indicando ponti e calli da prendere, rendendo questo libro più di una raccolta, ma una vera e propria guida tascabile da seguire in città.

A visit to Venice prompted the acquisition of this book. It's full of bizarre tales of ghosts and weird goings-on. The maps are useless, though, as a guide!
