Sister Nilah narrates Sister Charlotte's life story as told to her 41 years prior to 1999. Sister Charlotte hadn't wanted it printed until her life was over. The story is written just like it was told neither adding to nor deleting from, except in instances of some names and places. Sister Nilah adds that the story needs to be heard.
This was a very interesting book. I worked at a Catholic owned hospital for a little over 30 years and had two nuns for supervisors for a relatively short time. Both of them ran a tight ship. However, the abuse of this nun, Charlotte, and all of the other nuns that took place in the cloistered convent she was in shocked me. Charlotte entered this convent as a young girl, and her parents were happy with her decision. After many years of cruel abuse, she escaped, only to be betrayed by her father, which led to being taken back to the convent. That is not the end of her story. But I suggest that if you have any curiosity about the ending of this story, I highly recommend this book.
I heard Sister Charlotte’s testimony years ago on YouTube and I remember it being insane. I later found out that her testimony was published and knew I wanted to read it to get more details. Her story is INTENSE. I seriously don’t know how there isn’t a movie about this.
Her story is about her experience as a cloistered nun, all of the suffering and torture she endured and how she escaped. Her testimony is enough to make your skin boil in disgust and frustration.
If you like reading survivor stories, give it a read!
This book was very eye-opening. I don’t even know how Catholics can justify convents…especially a cloistered convent. Do they even know these stories?! Incredibly disturbing that people who desire and decide to live for God are treated so cruelly and less than human by those they are to serve alongside. What sad, brainwashed, and truly sadistic people could ever hurt their fellow man this way under the guise of helping them get closer to God.
I have to admit that I was horrified by the actions committed against the author as well as the other nuns. How humans can stoop so low is beyond me. The tortures described are just horrendous! But what a wonderful testimony of the power of God's word! Jesus can heal any heart and melt away the hate and fear that fills the heart of the abused, as shown by Charlotte. I love how Charlotte's faith and actions served as a testimony towards her family, and how Jesus was able to start healing the broken bridges in their lives!
When I first heard about this book I couldn't bring myself to believe the events happened. This whole book kept me on the edge of my seat and it was hard many times to hold back the tears.
I have talked personally with a relative of the author and everything is true that happened in the book. This is a must read that exposes what the Catholic church has hidden and covered up for years.
Wow! This is definitely worth the read. It will surprise and shock you. It also makes me sad at the depths and how far humans will go to follow "traditions" and to abuse "power" in the name of God. To think of how so many never escaped this life...
