A physician tells the powerful stories of the poor, innercity, HIV-infected patients she has treated, vividly exploring the medical dilemmas, the financial struggles, and the feelings of hope and hopelessness jointly faced by patients and doctors
Amazing look into an inner city AIDS clinic in the early 1990s, before AIDS became a chronic illness (and was more often a death sentence). Gives a beautiful view of what a bright, sensitive, caring physician can do and experience, with a list of characters each with his or her own personality and quirks. Gives too an insider's view of a fractured system, both in and outside the clinic, with a suggestion of what a difference such a physician must make in the bleak lives of her patients. Wonderful prose, wonderful insights. I recommend this book very highly.
This is a book I read in college for one of my sociology classes and I didn't really read it through. Now that I have time and can read for enjoyment I picked it up again and REALLY read it. The pieces Dr. Zuger chose for this book are diverse and poignant. I truly enjoyed this book the second time around.
