~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Pre Teens- One Star New Teens- One Star Early High School Teens- Three Stars Older High School Teens- Four Stars My personal Rating- Four Stars My emotions felt a little stronger while reading this book. I definitely relate to Maya in many ways and our feelings on change are very similar. I loved the message of this book and while even though the ending got me teary-eyed, I really enjoyed this book and the characters and the humor and so much more.
The timeline for planning a huge wedding with 200 guests in 3-4 months was not at all realistic. Maya did everything at the last minute but it all worked out perfectly. The timeshare they wanted to use for their honeymoon in Hawaii (which was picked like 2 weeks before the wedding) magically just so happened to only be available the week they wanted to use it. Same with the caterer and florist. Everything happened to work out perfectly with no hiccups along the way. For a huge wedding with 200 people, that was not believable.
Same with money. Worried about paying for the wedding? No problem, Maya’s parents have a hidden savings account they set up to pay for it.
Also, I don’t like Jack. At all. He looks down on Maya, speaks for her instead of letting her speak for herself, and has no personality. He dumped the whole “move to Seattle” thing on her at the last minute - and they hardly talked about it! As a matter of fact, he didn’t talk to her for several days afterward. He just wasn’t likable and I kept hoping she would leave him at the altar and take up with Ethan instead.
I appreciate the message of God being in control, change is not bad, etc, but Maya wasn’t very relatable and was somewhat bratty about the whole thing.
Also, none of Erynn Mangum’s characters can cook. At all. And they complain about it constantly because eating out is so expensive and they can’t afford it, but all of her characters end up eating out for pretty much every meal. Maya ate one sandwich, several frozen dinners, and went out to eat hundreds of times. I thought the book got a little bogged down with all the descriptions of what she was eating. It made her seem really young too - a lot younger than the independent 25 year old she was supposed to be.

I tried to like this book. I really did. In my opinion, it was better than 'Latte Daze' that preceeded it, but, not by much. Yes, I gave that title 1 star, too.
I feel like a broken record because my complaints with 'Double Shot' are pretty much identical to that of 'Latte Daze'. I found the wedding planning storyline completely implausible (I just got through planning an August wedding and couldn't believe how fake and trite the whole storyline felt) and pretty much pushed to the backburner. On top of that, it felt like the characters were eating on. every. other. page. They were 'digging in' with 'mouths watering' multiple times in 1 chapter. Can Ms. Mangum not come up with another plot device? I was embarrassed for her and how elementary and pedestrian it became.
Finally, this book felt way too preachy for me. I understand that this is a book for Christian teens but Maya's dealings with the one token non-Christian character (one of her co-workers) smacked of hypocrisy, rudeness, and a holier-than-thou attitude.
The only reason I finished this book is because I had bought all 3 books in this series and felt obligated to see it through. Bad call on my part. I should have learned from 'Latte Daze' and donated the whole kit-n-kaboodle. Needless to say, I will not be reading any other novels penned by Ms. Mangum. I'll save my time and my money, thanks.
Entertaining, relaxing and enjoyable. Perhaps not the best written book ever, but something that is fun to relax with. I like Maya's realness and enjoy following her journey to know God better. My only complaint is that it feels like there should be another book...I kinda felt like I was left hanging, to be honest.
A good conclusion. It was very sweet. I just randomly laughed out loud at times. The humor is spot on! And I enjoyed seeing more of Maya’s family. Maya makes a lot of comments about how beautiful Jen is compared to her, but then she learns that she’s being jealous and shouldn’t. There were some comments about lady’s looks and figures that I didn’t appreciate, but otherwise this was pretty clean. There are a few more kisses, but Maya and Jack are engaged, and they weren’t detailed at all, so I felt like it was clean.
Random thing I picked up on that was a little annoying. There was a lot of repetition throughout these three books on a few things. Like I think every book (atleast once) explains that Cool Bean’s MixUps are the equivalent of Starbucks Frappuccino’s. And how Calvin loves to go to Maya’s parents because they spoil him. Etc Maybe I just picked up on that more because I read the books one after the other.
Not a new favorite series by Erynn Mangum, but I still enjoyed them a lot. It was a fun setting.
What do I think about these books? Good question. The last review I did on an Erynn Mangum (Miss Match) was pretty much a review of the entire series, so this also will be a review of the entire series. :) I know I am not really consistent because I posted my review for the entire series on the Miss Match page (the first book in the series Lauren Holbrook), and now I am posting my review for the entire series of Maya Davis on Double Shot (the last book in the series). I absolutely loved these books! So far there isn't a book by Erynn Mangum I haven't liked! Erynn Mangum you are definitely one of my favorite authors!
To begin I want to tell you that I yet again looked at the bad reviews for this book (which I consider any review with a 1 or 2 star rating). Back to the subject, I want you to know that out of 1,288 people who read the book there were only 5 one star reviews, and 14 two star reviews! That is really good! Bravo Erynn Mangum! :D Anyways if you have read my review of the Lauren Holbrook series (look at Miss Match) you would know that I love that series, so when I started reading this series's first book I was slightly depressed with the fact that Maya (the main character) was not Lauren. That was how much I loved the Lauren Holbrook series. When I read the first book of the Maya Davis series I acutely noticed every similarity between it and the Lauren Holbrook series. To be honest there are a lot of similar things, but I think that is only because the author puts some of herself into every book. Either way I ended up LOVING this book. Honestly I don't think anyone should be surprised by this. The first book was really good and definitely made me want to read the next books, but it was not my favorite out of the series.
I loved the relationship that Jack and Maya had. They were perfect together. The funny thing was that I had expected their relationship to be like Lauren and Ryan from the Lauren Holbrook series, but in the end they were totally unique and wonderful together. Jack and Maya had a slightly more romantic air to them where as Lauren and Ryan definitely loved each other, but joked around a lot more and were more silly. I loved pretty much everything that was in the third book. I won't tell you any spoilers so don't worry, but in this book in particular when Maya dealt with two certain struggles in her life I was completely absorbed. I felt like I was living the character's life. To me that means good writing.
I also wanted to bring up that in this series Maya actually struggled with problems in her life. This made everything feel more realistic. In the Lauren Holbrook her life was a little less realistic (however that doesn't me dislike that series at all). Maya's problems seemed to me like pretty everyday normal problems. There was a review that said that Maya's problems were silly and unrealistic but to me everybody has silly small problems that at that time seem humongous!
There is kissing in this series, but it is not descriptive in the slightest. It is up to your judgement to decide if you want to read this (though it really is perfectly clean). I loved these books so much, and you will only hear a glowing review from me! :D I would have no problem if you want to make more of these books Erynn Mangum. I would buy and read them all! :D
In the end if you like funny contemporary Christian books this is perfect for you. I can't say everyone will love it, but I certainly do. I am absolutely sure that someone will read this book and only see a fluffy nonsense book, but I personally loved this series. I would suggest this series to everybody I know! I don't care if you don't usually read these kind of books, try something new!
Title: DOUBLE SHOT Author: Erynn Mangum Publisher: NavPress October 2010 ISBN: 978-1615215492 Genre: young adult / chicklit
Can coffee and chocolate make everything better? It’s worth a shot.
Now that Maya Davis is engaged to her longtime friend and sweetheart, Jack, there should be no more worrying about the future, no more questioning God. Everything should be perfect, right? Actually, it’s just the opposite: Things are complicated. Where are they going to live? What kind of wedding do they want?
And when Jack is offered a once-in-a-lifetime job in Seattle, things begin to unravel even more. Can Maya trust that God is in control even when things seem to be a disastrous mess?
DOUBLE SHOT is the third book in the A Maya Davis Novel series and I’m sorry to see this couple go. Readers will want to read Cool Beans and Latte Daze first, but there is enough back story included so new readers won’t get lost.
Maya and Jack are about the cutest couple ever. Maya is stressed with planning a wedding, a premature nephew, a new coworker, a move, and so much more all happening at once. Just about everything that can rate high on the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, all happening at once.
There are some inconsistencies in the series – and in the book – which would’ve been caught by a good critique partner. Or even a read-through by the author.
Jack is so sweet and considerate, and patient with Maya, who is a bit of a drama queen. I loved DOUBLE SHOT and the whole series. Written in first person/present tense. My teenage daughters are reading this series now.
These books are great. They're the kind of books where, I'll sit down and before I know it more than an hour and 100 pages have passed. I can hear the characters talking, like I'm right there. They really draw you in. This end to the Maya Davis series didn't disappoint! Cute, funny, and pure- a refreshing change of pace from so many books out there.
While Mangum's first series was still her best one so far, this series is still worth reading! I love Mangum's sense of humor and her development of her characters with all their quirks. I look forward to future books by her.
It is very refreshing to read a romance book that is not laden with sex, cursing, lewd behavior, etc. Erynn does a great job of interlacing Scripture into the book without it being preachy. This should be used in church youth groups to give teenage girls a moral picture of dating.
I might cry!! This book was extremely stupendous. The plot, characters, and transitions were also sweet. Maya just became more lovable throughout the series. I can’t wait to start my next Erynn Mangum series.
I was bored a lot of the time. Jack to me was an average guy and kinda boring. I wish there was some unexpected things happening. I have to say not my favorite
This was the 6th book (I read another series) of Erynn Mangums. The first two books in the series were a quick read. I breezed through them. This one seemed to take me FOREVER! I just couldn't bring myself to want to sit down and finish it. I did though b/c I wanted to know what happened. I have to say that Maya kinda got on my nerves. The first two books in the series were okay, but by this third book in the series, I was quite annoyed by her and her negativity. She didn't seem to really be in love with Jack. She seemed to just settle b/c she saw her best friend get married & felt down. She seemed a little selfish as well. Maybe it's just me, but if my fiance got a great job opportunity and we wouldn't have to struggle with finances (especially as newlyweds), I'd be jumping up and down. I'd be excited for him. She wanted none of it, and seemed to throw a pity party. I read the Paige series and enjoyed Paige's character much, much better. I'm going to try and read the Match series.
🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵 Hmm. I have mixed feelings about this one. First off, it was sooooo sloooowww! Second, Maya just worried way too much. Like EVERY LITTLE THING, she panicked. Third, it was slightly depressing because of Kate having her baby too soon. It described him in vivid detail, and I SOBBED. I’m just glad he didn’t die, the poor baby 😭 anyway, this one was alright, now on to the fourth book! 🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵

A 4.5⭐! While not my favorite book in the series this one still hits close to home, and Maya once again feels a bit too relatable lol. Change is never fun, but I like how she ends up handling it in the end and I love getting to see her develop as a character and as a partner to Jack. I know there's two more novellas in this series that take place about 10 years later (I think?) but for now this book concludes everything nicely 💛
This book series is another hit for me! I loved Maya from the beginning, and I couldn’t wait to see her and Jack finally end up together. As always, Mangum does an amazing job of writing such relatable heroines. They’re quirky and flawed, but they are always trying to follow Jesus and love their friends. Maya’s inner commentary always makes me laugh, and she and Jack are perfect together. I loved seeing everyone come together for their wedding. Maya has to work through some challenges in this book, but she always has her friends and family by her side. I loved seeing her come to terms with God’s plan for her life even if it didn’t look like what she planned. This book is one of my favorites to reread, and it always makes me smile because even the hard moments are handled with grace. This is a clean and Christian women’s fiction read that I would definitely recommend! It does include content about a baby in the NICU.
cute story I recently got married myself with a 8 month engagement among a part time job and finishing college and a move to another state while my Dad was sick with leukemia but I am not a worry-wort like the character in the book
This book was as enjoyable as the first two, but I didn't like the way Erynn ended it. She really left us hanging with a lot of unanswered questions. Is there going to be a number 4 perchance? I certainly hope so because I would really like the answers to some of those questions. Will Jack get the job? Will they move to Seattle? Why did Jen look sad when she told Maya to hold onto Jack? (There seems to be more to that story!) Will they stay in Hudson and, if so, will Maya hold onto her promotion? How will Canis and Calvin get along when they are suddenly thrust into cohabitation? And... perhaps this could be explored later... what about children? But most of all, I want Jack and Maya to be happy. I would like to know if, wherever they end up, they are happy. Would Jack be happy in Hudson? Would Maya be happy in Seattle? Please, Erynn, don't leave us hanging!
