EDIT** I guess the author has gotten quite a few people to stand up in his defense. So let me preface this review by saying that all you need to do is read the sample of the book first before buying it. If the dozens of interrobangs, ellipses, and choppy conversations in the first few pages don't make you want to hang yourself, feel free to buy the book.

And to the author/Max Kruger/etc, if my review sounds childish in style, it's probably because the book was written that way, so there's not much for me to work with. It's certainly better than saying I should be "investigated" and then regurgitating the plot. I'm pretty sure that everyone can look at my reviews and see that I am not a fake. Sorry your book sucks so much. -2/19/13

Original review:
Ok so I have been tossing this review around for a while. I have a hard time being a jerk (true story). But I have to, because all of these five star reviews made me think, hey, maybe this book is good.

Wrong. I should have paid attention to the fact that all those reviews were posted on the same day, and those reviewers pretty much only have this author's books on their shelves.

This book was easily the worst book I've ever tried to read. I hate to not finish books, even if they are terrible. I just couldn't do it here. The story was all over the place - there's some ghost hunters filming, and at the same time there's a treasure hunt going on, I guess for some estate? I *think* some dead guy wanted his heirs to run around like crazy to find their inheritance. Problem was for me, I had NO IDEA which characters were with which plot.

The punctuation did me in though. Every sentence ends with an exclamation point! Every one! Even ones that don't express exclamation!!! What...?!

I'd LOVE to say that an editor could have saved this book. Unfortunately, that would make me a liar. An editor would have no idea where to even start here. So Mr Bertolaccini, if it's your family that came and rated your books on here, and they all told you your book was great, sorry, they lied. This is not opinion. And if your friends did you a solid and reviewed it, have them actually read it so that I can actually feel marginally better for paying $5 for this.

This mystery novel takes place in a castle that's pretty much always built up with people not knowing which dark would-be tunnel leads to what. There are times when this build up feels like half the novel. On top of which, while Bertolaccini's trying to build up visual imagery, there's no sense of poetry and there are no unique qualities. On top of that, the descriptions are as dull as the prose is bad. Take a look at this: "What had they been going to do with an old rope and harness?" WHAT HAD THEY BEEN GOING TO DO? Was he really trying to reinvent "What were they going to do?" Or was English just not his subject in elementary school?

The author certainly tried to make things interesting at first, but even a book with 60 super-short chapters can feel dragged on, and the interesting stuff is rehashed constantly, thus ending up completely boring by the end of it all. Too tropey, and too long for its short page count.
