Midnight Star
Ranger is a werewolf, a Lykae with a problem. He's found his one true mate, the only female who can complete him. Only trouble is, he's denied his instinct to claim her. I also work on single stories, and one of those might be hitting the shelves soon as well.
I grew up here, there, and everywhere, from California, to upstate New York to just about everywhere in between. I think the moving around drove me to find my own outlets in life -- reading being one of them, and writing being another. I hope that my work is enjoyable to my readers, and some day I'd love to hear from a fan that they have my book stored all safe and secure on a shelf where they can pet it when they want. :) Or that they pull my book down on a bad day to simply escape for a bit into the worlds I spin.

I had to look at the title again to assure myself it was the first in the series, because I felt like I'd been dropped into the deep end of the pool and not in a fun way. In a confusing and irritating way.
The writing was full of grammatical mistakes and tended to fly off on tangents so that from the top of the page to the bottom you'd forget what was supposedly happening in a scene.
Pages and pages would go by and the characters are still standing around talking over a dead body.
This seems to be the author's way of info dumping. Have something pertinent happen and then hop from character to character's thoughts. BUT these thoughts are more often than not, NOT about what just happened.
It was annoying and tiresome to read.
Plus the H, Ranger would constantly contradict himself in his thoughts. He wants to make it up to her, he doesn't want to... what?
what???
I have no bloody idea, the author can't keep a train of thought to save her life!
And don't get me started on the crappy world building. Is it modern? Ok cell phones are mentioned... But then why is everyone walking around with swords? Don't other people wonder about the swords? Is the paranormal a secret to humanity in this one? No frickn' clue.
People keep popping in and out faster than a star trek transporter. They live forever or just a long time? But only the good looking ones...
The book is basically a mess.

One mission could bring them together or cost them their lives.
Star has kept her guard up when it comes to letting others in to her life and for good reason. She lives in a lighthouse and that is the way she likes living – alone. She has adopted family that she is close to, but she doesn’t really feel like she belongs and is an outcast to her own kind. The “House” that she grew up in was not quite family oriented and it doesn’t help when your adopted family is part of a species that is sworn to hate everything about you before they actually know you, so in that regard she is an outcast on both sides. Two females and a few friends of similar outcasted circumstance, keep her grounded as much as possible. Since the meeting of one particular Lykae, her world has been turned upside down and she finds herself in constant battle of cravings and thoughts that she wished she didn’t have, but his disgust of her keeps her firmly away from him. Now all of sudden he’s decided to treat her differently, but she can’t fathom why. With ever-mounting distrust and much reluctance for several reasons, she agrees to go with him and a small team on a missing Lykae recovery mission back to the last place she’d rather be.
Ranger knows exactly who Star is and won’t be dissuaded by anyone from claiming her. Trouble is he made the error of waiting to long in wooing his female, so now her regard for him is even lower than it was before. Throw in the problem of a missing Lykae packmate and Ranger decides to combine the two in a ‘knock to birds down with one stone’ approach. Star’s unique ability and familiarity with the location makes her the perfect partner for the mission, but he knows she’s smart and doesn’t have any reason to agree, so he decides to obtain her cooperation with the use of a 10-year old and the promise of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. It’s a brilliant plan, with the exception of everything that could possibly go wrong, so will it be enough to change Star’s mind?
Any reader will fall in love with Ranger and immediately recognize his alpha-male characteristics especially with them all displayed in full Lykae glory and with a brogue accent no less. His brand of wooing Star isn’t exactly conventional but with Star’s personality he wouldn’t have gotten far with her otherwise. Ranger is extremely possessive, as are all of the Lykae in this story when it comes to their mates, but it isn’t an unattractive, overbearing possession without choice for Star. He does make it awfully hard for her to resist him, but that’s part of the territory. The banter back and forth between the characters is entertaining and there are a few lengthy scenes with just the two of them, so it allows the reader to really focus in on their personalities.
Ms. Jean’s writing style is fresh and you never know what any of the characters are going to say, think, or do next. I could actually picture it from beginning to end like watching a movie. There are familiar creatures of all sorts to appeal to any readers taste and the world built around them is fantastic. The story gets going right from the beginning with the prologue and the reader will need to pay close attention so not a minute of the action is missed. There were quite a few moments of confusion for me, since all of the characters and situations are new, and not enough background is given to really set everything up. Almost feels like the reader is plunked down right into the middle of a brewing storm of character activity without a history base to hold on to, but I still couldn’t help getting swept away with it and neither will any other reader of this genre. Wonderful twist at the end and it sets it up nicely in case this is to be part of a series, since there are several other characters with stories that need to be told.
I’ll definitely be keeping my reading eye out for any other works by Ms. Jean.

An LASR 'BEST BOOK'!
Vampires destroyed Ranger’s whole family. At least he believed he was the last of his blood, until Star brought two females back to the stronghold, females of his blood.
Ranger overreacts to Star, as she is half vampire, and tries to take her head, giving her the idea that he hates her. The truth of the matter is, Ranger recognized immediately after the initial attack that Star is his one true mate, but for six months he has ignored her and the feelings she brings out in him. When they are forced to work together, Ranger tries to show her his true feelings, but Star isn’t buying into it. She knows how he makes her feel, and she won’t settle for any pale imitation.
When they become separated from the rest of the team on a mission, Ranger and Star become trapped underground, and he decides to use the time to convince her of his feelings and intentions. This would be fine, except they are being chased by mutant wolves, evil vampires and the Dark Ones, and can’t seem to find a way out. And every day, Ranger’s inner wolf grows more determined to mate with Star. Can they complete the mission, rescue the missing girl and get back to the stronghold alive? Can Ranger convince Star that she is his mate, and that he doesn’t hate her?
Billi Jean has written a fast paced thriller, filled with romance, passion and lots of humor. There are many missed chances, and errors in communication between our hero and heroine, but there is also an escalation of heat as they spend time together. This is a world filled with political intrigue between the vampires and the wolves, and the battle between good and evil. This is a story that kept me on the edge of my seat, wanting to see where it would take me next.
Star is half vampire, and has been tortured by the family that should have loved and nurtured her. She feels no compassion for the evil vampires, and it was those same vampires killed the only person who ever showed her any love. She is strong, and sassy and quick to anger. She has wonderful discussions with herself about Ranger and her feelings for him.
Ranger has regretted his attack on Star for six months, but has no idea how to make things right between them. He is smart enough to realize that when she finds out what he has known since he saw her, that she is his mate, she will be furious about it. I loved Ranger and enjoyed watching as he just dug his hole deeper with every action. Yes he is strong, and hot, and loyal. But above all else, he is fallible, and that makes him all the more attractive. He’s not perfect, and he tends to speak before he thinks, or act first and think later.
This is a story with twists and turns and surprises around every corner. Just when I thought I knew what would happen next, Billi Jean threw me in a different direction completely. The supporting characters were as well crafted as the main hero and heroine.
I want to read more about some of her supporting characters in the future; characters like the demons Agni and Torment, and the other wolves in the stronghold. I look forward to reading more set in the marvelous world that Billi Jean has created, and the passion she evokes from her characters. I will warn you that this one will make you laugh, and cry and shake your head in wonder at the comedy of errors that is Ranger in his pursuit of his mate.

After more than a year searching for this book, I can safely claim that this book really, really falls short of its ratings, and all my accumulated anticipation and excitement. Meh, Midnight Star is just another one of those stories filled with romance (but only substituted with porn), thereby inundated with the you-know scenes, and occasionally laced with the allusion to the possibility that the author has some writing potential other than having just sex on her mind. That's all I can say.

This kept me on the edge through the book. I could not put it down and want more in this world. The characters were complex and not just some "cookie cutter" hero and heroine. Star is strong yet oddly vulnerable and Ranger....such a great hero, hard yet gentle.
