it was always my least favourite in Deltora quests, less exciting or less events happening comparing (or I just don't like the Sand scenes?), so it was actually 2 until I started my 5th re-read, & now (nope, not saying it's miraculously my favourite of the series) I just figured that it's dear to me too.
it just dragged me in & I kept reading quickly, like the rest of them. I actually even liked the end & the Sands scene.
Lief's thoughts & descriptions could thoroughly imply the vastness of the scene.

Deltora book four. Leaf and friends need to find the fourth gem. I liked the fighting tournament and, particularly, the twists afterwards. The ramp up to the climax was my favorite in the series so far. The relationship among the main characters is getting more interesting, too.

This book again started with the aftermath’s of the last book, with Leif and co fleeing the ‘City of Rats’ before they could be found by the Shadow Lord, and thus their quest found out and any hope destroyed. Luckily, they had some friendly and helpful... fish... on their side to hide them whilst the Ak-Baba (giant evil bird) swooped overhead on the lookout.

After their escape, our three heroes (and their awesome animal companions ;D) travelled to a city to compete in the ‘games’, which they found advertised and listing 100-1000 gold prizes depending on whether you were a finalist or the champion. And of course, our heroes being as awesome as they are - all three made it to the finals, and one became the champion ;D

From there though, I did find that the remainder of the book was a bit bleh for me? The ‘nice lady innkeeper’ ends up being no-so-nice and one of the servants of the Shadow Lord, and helps the Grey Guards to capture our heroes and send them off up I the shadowlands to fight in an arena there. While they were saved by Doom (who definitely seems as though he’s going to have more of a role to play later) they then went off on their own to the Shifting Sands to defeat the evil there and get the next gem for the belt.

The bit in the Shifting Sands I didn’t really like tbh, and I felt that it let down the whole book for me (Though I still enjoyed it overall). I felt that the ‘hive mind’ evil thingamajig in the middle of the Shitting Sands wasn’t super well explained and their ‘defeat’ was more of a snatch and grab... and then they just got out of the Sands with zero consequences? No monsters after them? What.

Overall, I’d probably give this a 2.5 / 5 - or a ‘meh’. I’m still going to continue with the series, but I’m hoping the next book is a big improvement >.>

4 stars - English Ebook

When the seven gems of the magic Belt of Deltora were stolen, the evil Shadow Lord invaded the kingdom and enslaved its people.

Determined to rid their land of an evil tyrant, Lief, Barda and Jasmine are on a perilous quest to find the lost gems, which are hidden in fearsome places throughout the kingdom.

They have found three gems. Now they must seek the fourth, hidden in a shimmering, barren waste, kept jealously by an unknown guardian. Confusion and strange, terrible enemies await them in the ordeal of the Shifting Sands.

I particularly liked books one and two of this series, but I was a bit disappointed by book three, ("City of the Rats"). It seemed that book three sort of wandered around with odd sub-plots, until it all came together nicely at the end. Having just finished this volume four, I see the interesting pattern that Rodda is following.

Like book three, this one wanders away from the main storyline about one-third of the way in. There is then a very lengthy portion that is just totally tangential to the companion's quest. Then, there is a wham-bang ending, where what happened in the middle comes back to illuminate the closing action. Very clever and very satisfying.

The beauty of this is that it breaks the possible tedium of "kill the monster, get the gem" that would have set in book after book.

After all, we need to find and defeat seven monsters. It's hard to keep that interesting. But Rodda, by putting an apparently unrelated and diverting adventure in the middle of each quest, has managed to avert that tedium, and provide for satisfying surprise endings.

This is pretty cool and very impressive. Like to read the next book.

The Shifting Sands feels like a filler episode in the Deltora Quest series, a necessary step, maybe, but not an enjoyable one. The plot follows the same formula as previous books: new location, new monster, quick resolution. By this fourth installment, the structure is beginning to feel more tired than thrilling.

The titular Shifting Sands are intriguing in concept, but the actual execution lacks the sense of danger and wonder that the setting promises. The villain of the week feels forgettable, and the stakes, while technically high, don't come across as urgent. Lief, Barda, and Jasmine remain likeable enough, but there's very little character development, and their interactions are starting to feel stale.

Rodda's writing is solid, but it's weighed down by the predictability of the journey. After three similar adventures, the series really needed something fresh or emotionally resonant here, and this book doesn't deliver.

A disappointing slump in an otherwise charming series.

...Honestly, this book was kind of awesome? I feel like I forgot more of it than I had in the books before, so it was kind of cool re-discovering certain things. Like the bees. I forgot about the bees. I /did/ remember how there was an almost Hunger Games kind of situation before the actual Hunger Games books were even published, so that was pretty cool too.

But yeah. Lief is dramatic. Jasmine is awesome. Barda is officially the worst at coming up with fake names ("...Berry. From Bushtown. And these are my friends Birdie and Twig" like really barda oh my gosh). There was some violence, some puzzles, some creepy monsters, all the good stuff. And nostalgia. All the nostalgia.

This one was even better than the last! Definitely my favorite of the series so far. There was a lot of good action, some interesting worldbuilding, and a unique premise from the first three books. This is the first Deltora Quest book where I don’t really have any cons to speak of—this was great!

Like the third book, I felt that this installation in the Deltora Quest series took the whole thing away from the "Adventure" part. But halfway through "The Riftwere Games", which took at LEAST half of the book, I wanted the book to go back to the adventure. Surely the reason why the focus was so little placed on the gemstone and so much on this weird competition full of characters we don't know or get to care about much in a place that is entirely unfamiliar with stakes that are entirely trivial to the overall scheme, was because it will make sense in the grander scale. The series as a whole will surely benefit from the focus of this book. However, I don't see it yet. I'll need to read the rest to know for sure.
For a book that's called The Shifting Sands, it spent very little time IN the area that serves as its namesake. But, the writing for that section was superb. The right balance of danger, fear, unfamiliarity, deliriousness, etc one comes to expect from an extended stay in the desert. I thought the more abstract "Guardian" served really well in the face of all these concrete monsters. It broke away from the typical that I liked.
And as always, the writing style is great. The twists were enjoyable, and not very predictable, which is a relief. Even the character who you aren't sure of gets a few cameos. He'll be important later, I feel.
Overall, I would recommend it, but it's the weakest of the 4 so far.

This book is where my love for tournaments comes from, apparently, because I had forgotten how much I loved it. (Maybe why Goblet of Fire is my fave Harry Potter book, thinking about it). I think this might be my favourite book in this series (but we'll see).

What I adored about the book, aside from the tournament, is the start of many plot-points and support characters that will continuously return throughout the next few books. There is Doom and the resistance, the other candidates of the tournament, the Gray Guards and even Queen Bee, the elderly lady that makes honey, make multiple come-backs (that's the wonderful thing about re-reading stuff, you don't realise how much is set up).

The monster of the book was frightening, as it was there but not quite and the entire journey through the dessert was intense, mostly because it was just sand, sand and even more sand and Lief slowly growing crazy (honestly, I would just sit down and cry and wait to be eaten). Another thing I like about this book is that the author doesn't shy away from killing off characters. Not our heroes, mind you, but it's mentioned that certain characters died, and the main characters reacted to it.

QUITE POSSIBLY THE BEST BOOK IN THE SERIES!

I have truly enjoyed my read of The Deltora Quest books so far. They were recommended to me by a friend last year (2021) and I recall reading The Forrests of Silence and really loving it.

Before long I had created a goal for myself to complete this series (amoung others) by the end of the year. This was book 4/8 so I am now at the literal half-way mark. What a time for IMO the best book in the series!

In this one Lief, Barda and Jasmine are seeking the 4th gem that they know lies within The Shifting Sands.

There are many reasons I love this series.

1) Each book is incredibly short so it's a 1 day read for me (as an adult).
2) Each books moment of finding the gem (so far) and they way in which they need to problem solve to aquire the gem, have been fantastic to read!

But in this one I loved the warm-up.

All 3 enter into a competition that will grant them a lot of money if they win. I really enjoyed the competition and what came after it.

Thus far, all Deltora books have received 4 Stars from me, but this one undoubtably deserves 5!

5 Stars!
xoxo.

This book definitely has the most interesting Guardian. It has such a different feel from the other books. Once they reach the Sands, Lief is so disconnected from the others, in an almost dreamlike state, and we really feel that.

I also love how Rithmere is described. The characters we meet in the Games are all so distinct and interesting. And we get to see a bit of the Resistance! Doom is life ❤️

Creepiest final monster yet. This was an incredibly tense read when I was a child, and it still has a lot going for it now. The sandbeasts have a strong xenomorph vibe, and the tournament in the middle was surprisingly brutal. The real introduction of Doom is here, with some hilarious dramatic irony related to his backstory .

I definitely think Jasmine is at least partly to blame for my tendency to collect all sorts of random objects, just in case they will be useful one day. She was always my favourite character, and probably the main reason I read and reread these as a child.

current ranking:

1. the forests of silence
2. the lake of tears
3. the shifting sands
4. the city of rats

this was more fun compared to book 3 which is good because it gives me hope it will only get more serious and exciting from here!!!

i’ve noticed that each book is following the same template at this stage. we get a gem, and then the book starts with a separation from location 1 from location 2, and this scene always feels disconnected from the grander story. i can see that for a younger audience having that distinct separation might be good, but for me it feels like a very dramatic shift when i am well aware we are moving on. like with this story the whole river with the fish and then the ak-baba flying over us, until we get to a new environment with trees and fruit. i don’t know it just felt a bit disconnected

the queen bee cider lady was so funny? 😭 she just controls the bees herself, and was ready to KILL US because we ate a few apples - babe it’s a bit dramatic. it was cute to see her little scene since her company’s cider was referenced continuously throughout the story, and her cheeky little advice about smoke controlling the hive was useful

kree being used in the stall game??? by the man who was scamming everyone?? i was so worried he was going to steal kree from us, why am i so attached to this bird.

i love games and trials in anything i watch and read so the little game plot line was really fun and i was quite excited for it. i sort of wish it was longer and more of the actual bulk of the story, but alas i can only take what i get. the gamble of getting 100 coins as a finalist but 1000 if you win… and jasmine won😭 i am of the view that doom could not beat her sorry, but mans just couldn’t admit defeat so of course he has to pretend he LET her win.

mother brightly is a snake. can’t believe she ratted us out and sold us off deliberately to the grey guards. i actually had faith that we made another friend. trust no one🙃

i do want to see doom again throughout the series. i feel like he has a lot of potential as a character and honestly could be very beneficial for us moving into the more serious and intense books. i trust him idk (ignore that i just said not to trust anyone. sigh, i repeat the same mistakes)

the actual shifting sands was so eerie, lief was NOT himself and it was frustrating me that barda and jasmine could hardly even communicate with him because he was so out of it. the villian here is an odd one, just ancient magic of the hive that collects treasures forever and ever, while its monsters (sAND SPIDERS?? HUGE ONES? no thanks) eat the flesh. then of course the bones have to be used to build our pyramid, we can’t let anything go to waste.

that whole pyramid with all the treasures gave me majjjjooor aladdin vibes. lief not being able to remove the lapus stone without replacing it for fear of the whole thing collapsing and the hive realising it’s been robbed? very much aladdin and i ate it up. i also wish this was longer, it could’ve been way more intense

lief needs a break, he needs a nap and a good meal and a big drink of water. someone feed this boy some grapes. yes without jasmine and barda he would be a dead man a long time ago, but he honestly has developed and grown so much as a character even just after these 4 books. i am looking forward to seeing him develop even more, especially keeping in mind that he is so very young.

Netflix, me chama, eu tenho planos megalomaníacos pra essa história!!

This is the fourth book in the Deltora Quest series. Compared to the previous books, The Forests of Silence, The Lake of Tears, and City of the Rats, this one feels far more light-hearted. It even features a tournament, during which the trio meets a stranger named Doom.

Now, when a character is named Doom, and he is super mysterious, an experienced fighter, and just cool in every possible manner, you know that said character will return throughout the series. Naturally, Doom has heard of the trio and their accomplishments.
I have heard whispers about three travellers — a man, a boy, and a wild girl, accompanied by a black bird. Wherever these travellers go, it is said, part of the Shadow Lord’s evil is undone.
Overall, this book felt like the calm before the storm. Three gems left, surely the journey will get harder as the Shadow Lord is bound to take notice as more and more territories of Deltora is cleansed of his evil.

SN: I remember loving this series when I was a kid but I don't remember if I actually finished it. I might have moved on to another series by the time the last book was published. So here goes my attempt at rereading the entire thing!

This one was a close second favorite when I was a kid. I loved the whole tournament segment and I love how the relationship between the main characters is starting to show some strain, but it's still a solid group. Plus, I'm a sucker for desert scenes.
