edit: I guess I should mention that this volume lost a star because it was little slower than the first 3 (personal preference really).
So volume 4 gives readers a more blatant insight into Ume Kurumizawa aka Kurumi's true colours. Kurumi schemes and creates convoluted plans to keep girls out of Kazehaya's way and her latest victim is our much loved protagonist, Sawako.
It was enjoyable to see Kurumi not afraid to speak her mind to Sawako whether it destroyed her image of 'kind and beautiful' and equally enjoyable to see Sawako react in a measured, accepting and understanding manner of this "new" side to Kurumi. Having said that, Kurumi does become the iceberg in the way of the ship. She threatens to break down the steadily growing relationship between Kazehaya and Sawako by pinching at insecurities Kazehaya has and causing Sawako to question the true meaning of her feelings. Which brings me to the next point. In this volume, Sawako admits to having "special" feelings for Kazehaya and resolves that these feelings are for him and cannot be interchanged with any other male.
Ayane and Chizu finally crackdown the person who started the horrible rumours in volume 2 but (and maybe to the frustration of some) Sawako forgives this person.
The volume ends with tears from both girls in love with Kazehaya. I think a part of me feels bad for Kurumi, she's crushed on Kazehaya for so long and done everything she can to keep others from him and then comes along a girl who barely knows him and tears down her fantasies. Actually, no, screw Kurumi. I love my ship.
As with the previous installment, this volume focuses more on Sawako's relationships with her newly acquired female friends, but toward the end we also see progress in her feelings for Kazehaya. I am really enjoying how unusual this protagonist's though process is. This enhanced by contrast with Kurumi, who is stereotypically "devious popular girl".
Kurumi's down, and I don't really remember from my previous reading if she's out. While I don't understand her mentality in a lot of ways (maybe never having inhabited the body of a "pretty girl" makes it impossible), it's greatly amusing to me how easily Sawako bamboozles her without scheming, just being herself. Of course, Ayane and Chizu had their part to play in sorting the situation out and confronting Kurumi about her rumor-mongering. Before that, Ayane had a great scene when she confronted Kurumi without anger, but also getting her message across in uncertain terms. Ryu had a great scene, too. He isn't ML material, but as a secondary character he's a lot of fun, and several volumes in the future. :)
2 stars. Least favorite volume so far. It went all out with the cliche of ‘seemingly nice girl is actually not so nice because she is also in love with main character’s love interest’. It’s a terrible trope and I wish it wasn’t so frequently used in shojo manga stories. It especially didn’t work here because Sawako is such a sweet and caring person that she just didn’t react the way you would expect her to and that was actually really annoying. There’s nothing wrong with Sawako being a nice person but she shouldn’t let that be an excuse for people to walk all over her, which Kurumi does. She tells the poor girl over and over again that she never considered her as a friend and that she hates her and yet Sawako still likes her and wants to be nice to her? Why? It doesn’t make any sense. She didn’t have to cuss her out or try to fight her but she doesn’t stand up for herself whatsoever and that is the issue. This whole story line is an unnecessary detour and it doesn’t feel like it’s going to go anywhere. The only highlight in this volume was Pin because that whole thing with him and Kurumi was hilarious.
I'm not sure how to rate this one. I am not a fan of Kurumi and ready for her to be out the picture. *nervous laughter* I admire how Sawako wants to be her friend though, despite that Kurumi has pretty much used her and been a jerk. So, basically the last pages were not my favorite. At all.
However, I absolutely LOVEDDD the conversation between Ryu and Sawako! They are both so blunt and straightforward and just a fantastic friendship!
Ayane and Chizu were amazing and love the depth of the friendship they have with Sawako! Sawako deserves such wonderful friends and so excited/grateful they care for her so deeply.
4/5 Kimi ni Todoke continues to be a fun and entertaining teen romance. The drama and conflict are starting to pick up a bit while still being heart warming. The fact that the series makes an almost 40 year old man care about and be entertained by the antics and romance of teenage girls probably says more about me than the manga but I digress. I love these characters. Ayane particularly shines this volume as the bad bitch that’s out to protect her innocent friend.
I liked how Sawako responds to Kurumi’s request for help in hooking her up with Kazehaya. I’ve seen it played out the other way a few too many times.
Charming and endearing volume 4 is an improvement for the series. Kurumi and Sawako on the cover portrays their rivalry well and looks great.
I absolutely love this series and can’t wait to continue!! I read this book and it brought tears to my eyes. It’s so applicable to a certain situation in my life and it was such a blessing to read the character’s thoughts/feelings. I love how these books are philosophical, moving, full of yearning, and growth! 🫶🫰🏻
ryu’s “you ladies alright?” baseball scene and him consistently getting sawako’s name wrong kills me. i've never used the word rizz in my life, but no other word better encapsulates his aura like i'm still thinking about his "if she says she doesn't care about you, i've got a shoulder you can cry on" scene oml he's too smooth with it. and ayane's talk with kurumi omg she's so cool 😮💨 her “ha ha ha ha ha… we got her.” is so FUNNY
There's an abundance of things to adore in this volume, from impactful scenes to heartwarming character dynamics. However, this volume is on the slow side and takes effort to get into.
Sawako Kuronuma is a wonderful and unconventional protagonist. She's honest, kind and always stays true to herself. I love Sawako's character development in this volume. Her genuine personality warmly draws in the people she interacts with and I love her pure and wholesome outlook.
The friendship between Yoshida, Yano and Sawako is so beautiful! Yoshida and Yano's unwavering devotion to Sawako is heartwarming and they are effortlessly funny.
Kurumi's multifaceted nature gains dimension as we see her through Sawako's eyes, evoking sympathy. Her presence acts as a catalyst, pushing Sawako to explore her emotions for Kazehaya and the revelations through dialogue and art are beautifully executed.
The conversation between Sawako and Ryu is lovely and Pin is also unexpectedly hilarious.
I love the interactions between Kazehaya and Kuronuma. Kazehaya is obviously smitten and there are some great scenes in this volume where his feelings are evident through his actions.
This volume might be less engaging, but the emotional complexity, character development and genuine interactions makes this manga series a gem. I'm TOTALLY invested!
Another great volume! A big turning point for Sawako as she starts to understand and become more aware of her feelings towards Kazehaya. It’s written so well!! Her innocence and the way those feelings develop is super wholesome!
As for Kurumi… a difficult character. I can understand her feelings. She’s had a crush on Kazehaya for so long, and seeing that those feelings aren’t reciprocated is obviously devastating for her, something most people can relate to. However, the way she goes about it, and her treatment of not only Sawako but Chizu and Ayane too, is awful. So while I understand her… screw her! 😭 Like I’m actively getting frustrated reading it LMAO!
Once again, all the characters are written so well. I love this story so much, and the art is great! A lot of the panels are genuinely funny!
It’s honestly a bit frustrating getting to know Kurumi in the first few volumes. I can’t wait until her character becomes more enjoyable and her friendship with Sawako grows. The best part of this volume is seeing Ayane and Chizu defend Sawako <3. Their trio means so much to me.
I love how Sawako is just so nice that this bitchy girl doesn't faze her. I kind of wish we could get a little more of Kazehaya and Sawako's relationship developing. Like I feel the chemistry and I would like a romance, but there isn't enough to make it substatial quite yet. It's mostly just blushing looks and awkwardness. Like nothing much has happened between them since the first volume so hopefully we get more moments soon.
This book is so good for young readers. Its kinda tricky if you dont know how to read manga. I love the drama its so much fun. Its a good book if your in the library and just looking for good mangas!!!

I really enjoyed this volume! Sawako is finally realizing her feelings for Kazehaya! I am still not a big fan of Kurumi! She is causing so much drama and is trying to confuse poor Sawako! I will definitely be reading more of this series!
