In the first of these stories from the Catskill Mountains, a superstitious schoolmaster encounters a headless horseman; in the second, a man sleeps for twenty years, waking to a much-changed world.
This author, essayist, biographer and historian of the early 19th century wrote newspaper articles under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle to begin his literary career at the age of nineteen years.
In 1809, he published The History of New York under his most popular public persona, Diedrich Knickerbocker.
Historical works of Irving include a five volume biography of George Washington (after whom he was named) as well as biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, Muhammad, and several histories, dealing with subjects, such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors, and the Alhambra, of 15th-century Spain. John Tyler, president, appointed Irving to serve as the first Spanish speaking United States minister to Spain from 1842 to 1846.
One of the seminal American ghost stories, arguably the preeminent American ghost story, with a name as recognizable as any contemporary pop culture phenomenon (thanks in large part to its perpetual resurrection in Halloween tradition, Disney, Tim Burton and now numerous derivative and inspired works of fiction), The Legend of Sleepy Hollow indicates Washington Irving’s fascination with the mysterious, the legendary, and the macabre.
Even when it was published in 1820 (less than half a century since the ending of the American Revolutionary War) it was about an America haunted by its past and the lingering specters of its inception (as an abstract idea struggling for independence rather than as a conquered land). Irving, being among the earliest generations of Europeans to call this new world his native home, was enamored of its ‘youthful promise’. It seems to have been very much in his character to create his own legend as someone who made himself ‘familiar with all…places famous in history or fable’, and who knew ‘every spot where a murder or robbery had been committed, or a ghost seen’. (This is according to the author’s own account).
The story, as with the ‘drowsy, dreamy influence’ of the town of Sleepy Hollow itself, is, as the cliché goes, dripping with atmosphere from the rustic milieu to the folkloric superstitions of its inhabitants which can lead a modern reader to lament the loss of such fanciful reveries and eerie landmarks like Major Andre’s tree (‘regarded with a mixture of respect and superstition’), which one can imagine uprooted and supplanted by a 24-hour-drive-thru a century and a half hence.
As for our fainthearted protagonist, the harsh, unflattering description of Ichabod Crane (‘one might have mistaken him for the genius of famine descending upon the earth, or some scarecrow eloped from a cornfield’), especially when juxtaposed with the imposing epitome of archetypal machismo made manifest in the alliteratively uber-brawny Brom “Boom Bones” Van Brunt, and the rivalry established between them over the affection of the immediately and intensely sexualized and coquettish Katrina Van Tassel, almost seems to initiate the narrative trope of the nerdy underdog and the intimidating jock a couple centuries prior to Revenge of the Nerds. Only in this case, the underdog does not come out on top, but is instead infused with the legend of the town after being rejected, humiliated, and speculatively killed by The Headless Hessian Horseman. The ambiguity of the tale’s conclusion is the ambiguity of history, to be received dubiously by any who can’t recognize their own susceptibility to particular interpretations of passed-down events.
Legends endure because they are fascinating, exciting, and cathartically significant. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is (to some extent) a nostalgic story about (to some extent) the power of nostalgia and its legend deserves to endure. I hope it is read to young people at Halloween-time for generations to come.

I listened to this driving home from NJ last night, though I just got around to reviewing it today. If this can be called a review, that is.
I don't really have much to say about these two stories, honestly.
Sleepy Hollow is actually a bit creepy at times on audio, especially since the ending is left unresolved, but honestly, I think it's pretty obvious what the situation was. He had an overactive imagination and someone took advantage of that knowledge to their own benefit. A cautionary tale, perhaps, to be a little less inclined to see a ghost in every shadow, and think a little more reasonably and logically?
Rip Van Winkle was just.. not really impressive. I didn't like Rip, and I think that he was a terrible protagonist because he shirked every job that needed doing and left everyone to do all the heavy lifting... and then got drunk and passed out for 20 years, only to return and take up his old couch groove again.
I wanted to refresh my memory of the two stories after attending the Sleepy Hollow Music Festival last month, where the Headless Horseman roamed the grounds with a beautiful black horse in tow. It's said the author is the "father of American literature," but that can't be because of these two stories. They are pretty lightweight, though sweet and quaint. And there is hardly a thing scary about the creature who terrorized poor Ichabod Crane.

Bu kitabın baskısı elimde olmasa da içinde Hayalet Süvari de bunun içinde bulunuyor diye tahmin ediyorum. Eğer bulunmuyor ise de yine 1938 yılında Tan Matbaası'ndan çıkan Uykulu Kuytu Menkibesi'nde; ki Cevat Şakir imzalıdır, Hayalet Süvari'yi ayrı ve tek kitap halinde basılmış olabilir. Bu isim değişikliği ile Theodor Storm'un başyapıtı olan ve 1888'de yayınlanan "Der Schimmelreiter" adlı eseri dilimize yine "Hayalet Süvari*" adıyla çevirildiğinden kafa karışıklığına neden olabilir ama öykünün orjinal ismi de Hayalet Süvari'dir. Eserin Süha Demirel'in Tefrika Yayınlarından çıkan ve kapağında kitabın sonuna dair ipuçları barındıran Başsız Süvari - Rip Van Winkle isimli çevirisinin dışında Nagihan Çakır'ın 2016 yılında çevirdiği bir de Uykulu Kuytu Söylencesi bulunmaktadır.
Kitabın ilk öyküsü olan Rip van Winkle; tıpkı 1922'de çıkan Benjamin Button'ın Tuhaf Hikayesi gibi zaman algısını tersyüz eden, oldukça özgün bir öykü. Öyküye Hristiyan teolojisindeki Yedi Uyurlar'ın ilham verip vermediği bilinmez ama öykü üzerindeki gizem okuru kendine öyle çok bağlıyor ki insanın elinden bırakası gelmiyor. Uyku, tarih boyunca hep bir fenomen olarak insançocuğunun aklını kurcalamıştır; son derece özgün bir öykü konusu olmuş.
İkinci öykü olan Hayalet Süvari'ye gelince, öykünün giriş sayfasında "Başsız Süvari Efsanesi" deniyor, sanırım bu Dilek Şendil'in ilk çevirisinden kalmış. 1999 yılında Tim Burton'ın yönetmenliğinde sinemaya da aktarılan bu öykü başlarda uzun kişi tasvirleri nedeniyle biraz sıksa da; cırcır böceklerinin, kurbağa seslerinin, ağaç uğultularının ormanın kadim sessizliğini bozduğu bir zifiri karanlıkta hafif bir esintide dahi ürkerek ilerliyoruz. Bu korkutucu atmosfer, okurun da dişlerini sıkmasına neden oluyor okurken.
Yer yer ironileriyle ("...kızını piposundan bile çok severdi... (s.80) vb.) yer yer ise müthiş doğa tasvirleriyle ("...beride beliren hafif bir dalgalanma uzaktaki bir dağın lacivert gövdesini titretiyordu. Kehribar rengi birkaç bulut onları kıpırdatacak hiçbir esinti olmadan da gökyüzünde salınıyorlardı." (s.87)) başarılı bir öykü olan Hayalet Süvari, daha doğrudan ve hızlı ilerleyen Rip van Winkle'a kıyasla daha ağır, kurgusu daha sağlam ilerleyen bir öykü. Öykünün giriş ve gelişme bölümleri sonuca kıyasla daha uzun tutulduğundan uzun bir eser olarak yazılmaya başlanıp, sonra kısa olmasına karar verilmiş gibi bir izlenimi olsa da bu onun iyi bir öykü olduğu gerçeğini değiştirmiyor.
George H. Boughton'ın ilüstrasyonlarıyla okuması daha keyifli bir hal alan bu kitabın klasikler arasında mutlaka okunmasını tavsiye ederim. Özellikle Poe okurunun bu iki sıcak öyküyü beğenmeme ihtimali yok diye düşünmekteyim. 1938'den beri bir insan ömrüdür dilimizde bulunan bu kitabı daha yeni okuduğum için kendime kızarak...

Tenemos una primera historia y que todos conocemos quizá por la película tan famosa “Sleepy Hollow“ La leyenda del jinete sin cabeza”, esa película llevada al cine por Tim Burton, y que yo tenia en mente cuando empecé a leer esta historia, pero que es muy muy diferente a la leyenda real. El autor describe muy bien y mucho la atmosfera para crear ese misterio y esa tensión pero que a mi gusto hace que se haga algo lenta. Vamos a tener un pueblo rústico, algo tétrico perdido por el mundo y en el que vive un misterioso jinete sin cabeza. Un pueblo con diferentes personajes algo diferentes, con un toque gótico y de fantasía, en el que ocurren macabros acontecimientos y que muchos de ellos los deja un poco a interpretación tuya.
La segunda historia incluida en esta edición, aunque es super corta, me ha gustado bastante más. Rip Van Winkle, una historia muy original que pone patas arriba la percepción del tiempo de las personas humanas, me ha recordado un poco al curioso de Benjamin Button. El misterio que hay detrás de esta novela corta fascina desde el principio y no puedes no leerlo del tirón. El tema del sueño siempre ha sido un fenómeno que ha intrigado a todos a lo largo de la historia y usar eso para “viajar” en el tiempo hace que sea algo diferente. Conocida como una de las leyendas mas famosas de la cultura y muy arraigada diferentes pueblos. Nuestro protagonista, después de un sueño largo (de varios años) y reparador en un pueblo de las montañas, al despertar se encuentra que todo ha cambiado, incluido las personas…
En resumen, Irving crea una ambientación de ambas historias muy oscura por medio de sus descripciones, que pueden gustar mas o menos, con un lenguaje que me ha gustado y que no conocía, y aunque esperaba otra cosa, recomiendo su lectura que se lee en un momento.
Both Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow are delightful short stories. They are well written and light-hearted. Overall I prefer Sleepy Hollow. It's more solid and, though the descriptions are overlong, they are rather more beautiful than anything in Rip Van Winkle. I also like that they are morally ambiguous, as in, they don't try to teach you anything, just entertain.
Reading up on Irving I learned that he is considered the first writer of the United States, as in the first one to make a living from his pen. But in light of this information I have to agree with Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote of him "Irving is much over-rated, and a nice distinction might be drawn between his just and his surreptitious and adventitious reputation—between what is due to the pioneer solely, and what to the writer."

Esa es su conocidísima versión cinematográfica, pero en 1820, Washington Irving escribió este relato que es un indispensable de la literatura gótica del siglo XIX.
En este pequeño compendio ilustrado, encontraremos dos relatos: «La leyenda de Sleepy Hollow» y «Rip Van Winkle». El primer mencionado, narra el relato de Ichabod Crane, un profesor que luchará por el amor de una joven no sin ciertos obstáculos como es la presencia de otro pretendiente o el terror que le espera en los bosques encantados de Sleepy Hollow. En el segundo, viviremos un viaje en el tiempo de un aldeano que tras quedarse dormido a su alrededor han transcurrido veinte años; un cuento cargado de un humor sorprendente y con maravillosas reflexiones.
Centrándonos en la principal, debo decir que la historia está escrita con extrema pulcritud y la prosa del autor embelesa desde su primera página, aunque admitiré que en el comienzo, a causa de las innumerables descripciones y quizás excesivos detalles de la cotidianidad del personaje, parece que la trama no termina de arrancar y se hace monótona. Pero eso no ha sido un impedimento para mi propio deleite lector, al contrario: el ritmo en esta lectura es lo de menos.
Lo que ha logrado encandilarme ha sido el toque humorístico, el misticismo, el ambiente, el folclore y los aires de leyenda gótica que destilan sus páginas. Porque en esta, a diferencia de la película, no tendremos una investigación ni un desarrollo en sí, esta es una historia corta para contar en una noche de terror y sembrar la duda de la veracidad de los hechos. Puestos a creer en algo, dejémonos llevar por lo fantástico. Lo disfruté en compañía de mi querida @laubythesea.
La spooky season ya ha pasado, pero nunca está de más volver a un ambiente tenebroso para disfrutar de un clásico como La leyenda de Sleepy Hollow o Rip Van Wickle, ambas novelas de Washington Irving, un autor cuya vida ofrece un salseo que tendría enganchadísimo hasta los colaboradores de Sálvame. Cuando me ofrecieron la oportunidad de leer estos cuentos no pude resistirme, y eso que el primer cuento ya lo he leído en 2017.
Reviewed after rereading. This was a quick, fun but not particularly extraordinary set of stories. The language the author uses is definitely of its time. And I for one preferred Rip van Winkle to sleepy hollow in considering their original forms. I like the story of sleepy hollow better but Irving‘s telling of it here doesn’t quite match up to the various TV and film adaptations. Still, if you are looking for a fun fast Halloween read this wouldn’t be a bad choice, particularly if you are fond of the classics.

Una edición que engloba dos de sus más conocidos relatos de terror, romanticismo y fantasía, La leyenda de Sleepy Hollow escrito en 1820 y Rip Van Winkle de 1819. Cuentos que han trascendido y llegado a nuestros días como parte ya del folklore más popular.
El primero de ellos, la famosa historia del jinete sin cabeza, me ha sorprendido sobremanera en cuanto a la tergiversación que ha acusado en el tiempo, convirtiéndolo en simple historia de horror, sobre todo a raíz de la adaptación cinematográfica de 1999 de Tim Burton. Nada más lejos de la realidad, a pesar de que las bases de la historia son efectivamente un tétrico pueblo perdido entre las montañas acosado por un misterioso jinete sin cabeza, el relato original más que terrorífico se torna misterioso, costumbrista por momentos, un visionado rápido a un pueblo arquetípico, con sus leyendas urbanas y sus variopintos habitantes, con un toque de fantasía y donde deja de mano del lector la interpretación de los macabros acontecimientos.
Con Rip Van Winkle, asistimos a una de las leyendas más arraigadas en la cultura popular y que se ha incrustado en el folklore de pueblos y regiones con multitud de versiones de la misma. Rip, tras un paseo por las montañas de Catskill, se sume inconscientemente en un profundo sueño de varios años. A su despertar, descubre que su vida y las personas con las que ha convivido han cambiado radicalmente.
Washington Irving sabe llevar las historias sin que decaigan en ningún momento, la ambientación es excepcional, tremendamente gótica, con paisajes agrestes y sombríos, las descripciones cuasi pictóricas y la utilización del lenguaje y estilo bellísimo. Todo ello aderezado con grandes toques de humor, seña de identidad del autor, que nos arrancan más de una sonrisa, dotando al texto de una frescura excepcional.
Una lectura más que recomendable y muy breve, los relatos se zampan en dos bocados literarios. Sobresalientes historias que me han vuelto a reencontrar con un autor que tenía sumido en el olvido y me ha vuelto a cautivar.
I think it's unfair to review these two stories as one so here are two little reviews:
Sleepy Hollow
I loved this one - although nothing like I was expecting after seeing the film, Sleepy Hollow is a marvellously funny and evocative little story that perfectly balances the slight chill of traditional ghost stories with some much appreciated tomfoolery. Ichabod is a brilliant character, and I enjoyed the fact that this was just a silly tale rather than anything too serious. Excellent atmosphere too.
Rip Van Winkle
I liked this one less than sleepy Hollow, but I think this is mainly to do with how hard done by poor Dame Van Winkle is - if I had a husband who was rubbish at farming, never did any work and sold land to get by I'd probably be pretty fed up too, but she's still painted as a villain - poor lady. I enjoyed the main story though and love Irving's writing.
I definitely recommend these two fun tales if you want something quick and enjoyable to jump into.

What most people forget about Irving's story is the absolute humor that runs though it. True, the horseman is scary, but the whole point of the story isn't the horror, it's the lampooning.
Libro muy breve (un poco menos de 100 páginas) publicado en 1820 (lo cual se nota mucho por el estilo en el que está escrito) y cuyo autor es Washington Irving.
Cuando me senté a leer este libro lo que tenía presente era la película de Tim Burton del año 1999 protagonizada por Johnny Depp y Christina Ricci…. Película que realmente nunca me gusto y me pareció aburrida.
Por eso me sorprendió enormemente ver que el libro no tiene NADA que ver con la película. En el film vemos que todo gira en torno al jinete sin cabeza y la podríamos encuadrar en una película de terror/misterio light. El libro es lisa y llanamente una comedia sarcástica de época, donde el jinete aparece durante dos páginas y no lo volvemos a ver más.
Ichabod Crane es el maestro de la comunidad de Tarrytown, en Sleepy Hollow. Es un tipo muy poco agraciado pero que le gusta la buena vida por lo que pone sus ojos en la bella hija del hombre más rico del pueblo, piensa que con sus conocimientos culturales podrá vencer a todos los pretendientes que revolotean en torno a Katrina Van Tassel. Lo que no sabe Ichabod es que Brom Bones un inculto gigantón musculoso es su único rival ya que se encargó de que el resto desapareciera.
La historia en si va de los esfuerzos de Ichabod de parecer más de lo que es e intentar no ser asesinado en el proceso por Brom, todo en medio de un pueblo que se vuelve loco por las leyendas de fantasmas…. Entre ellas la del jinete sin cabeza.
Es muy difícil no tener en cuenta el golpe que representa esperar leer algo de terror (más en el mes de Halloween) y encontrarse con una comedia de época que por momentos se hace densa. Hace mucho tiempo que no leía un libro tan lleno de notas al pie de página, y menos que fuera de ficción. A parte muchas de las notas eran larguísimas, verdaderas clases de historia (y para serles sinceras varias me parecieron más interesantes que la historia en sí).
Pero es divertido por lo sarcástico que resulta el personaje de Crane y algunas de las descripciones del pueblo y sus habitantes. Pero también a veces esas descripciones son extremadamente largas.
En resumen, me gusto, pero es decepcionante, esperaba una cosa, me dio otra que en un principio me gusto, pero al final se quedó corto.
Respecto al otro cuento que trae el libro “Rip van Winkle” me pareció super original para la época en que se escribió ya que se puede considerar un relato de ciencia ficción en los años coloniales de Estados Unidos. No quiero dar muchos detalles, pero me parece un relato mucho más logrado.
La edición es hermosa por la tapa y los colores que maneja. Las ilustraciones son super amplias, pero no me gustaron.

First, a confession: I’m not the biggest fan of Washington Irving. I studied his work in college, and I found most of it to be pretty tedious. But, it’s my goal to read more classic horror this year. It felt wrong to ignore “the father of American literature.”
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle are two novelette-length works that are set in the Catskill Mountains of New York. The stories were both published in 1819 and quickly became popular around the world.
In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a superstitious schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane attends a party where he hopes to catch the attention of the party host’s pretty daughter. Instead, he ends up listening to the other party guests telling ghost stories. On his way home from the party, he is stalked by a headless horseman. Ichabod isn’t sure if the horseman is a real ghost or a party-goer pulling a prank, but he ends up running for his life.
This story starts out very, very slowly. The majority of the story is actually descriptions of the landscape and Ichabod’s personality. I was tempted to skim because nothing really happens. The end of the story is much better. Once the headless horseman shows up, things get tense. I think the end is supposed to be a mystery, but I wish it had been a little more mysterious. The truth about the headless horseman is very obvious. I guess the moral of this story is not to get so carried away with your imagination that you can’t think critically.
Rip Van Winkle is about a lazy man who goes hunting to escape from his demanding wife. While in the woods, he comes across a group of ghostly men playing ninepins. Rip gets drunk with the ghost men and falls asleep. When he wakes up, his beard is a foot long, his gun is rusted, and his dog is gone. He makes his way back to town and finds that everything has changed. Rip discovers that he has been asleep for 20 years. He’s slept through the American Revolution. He went into the woods as a loyal servant to England’s king and came out as an American citizen in a baffling new country. After he learns that he’s slept through a war, he goes to his daughter’s house and resumes his lazy ways.
I’m not sure what the moral of this story is. Don’t take alcohol from ghosts? Maybe it’s a form of wish-fulfillment? Americans wish they could have slept through the horrors of the Revolutionary War? I don’t know.
I actually like Rip Van Winkle more than Sleepy Hollow. The pacing is faster, there is less description, and there isn’t a long lead-in to the action.
I can’t say that I love either of these novelettes, but I’m glad that I read them. I’m a fan of modern speculative fiction, and these stories had a big impact on the early days of the genre.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: a lanky young schoolmaster named Ichabod Crane manages the schoolhouse in the wraith-ridden town of Sleepy Hollow, New York. particularly famous of the region is the ghost of a Hessian soldier whose head was said to have been carried away by a cannon ball, and whose spirit goes out nightly in search of the missing body part. Ichabod Crane has a taste for the finer things, as well as an insatiable appetite, and he begins courting coquettish young Katrina—the daughter a very prosperous Dutch farmer. But he has the competition of Brom, a man much more substantial and daring than Ichabod. one night after a harvest feast, snubbed by Katrina and with his head full of phantoms, Ichabod rides out alone...and is never seen again. Did the headless horseman really overtake him? or was a jealous rival at fault? 4 stars.
Este libro reúne dos cuentos cortos de Washington Irving. Un maestro de escuela con una imaginación muy desbordada y sugestionable codicia la fortuna de una joven mientras es perseguido por el fantasma de un soldado decapitado. Un hombre holgazán no soporta más los reproches de su esposa y un encuentro con unos seres misteriosos cambiarán su vida.
Si bien la edición es hermosa (tiene una lámina desplegable) y ambas historias están muy bien ambientadas, desarrollando un ambiente tenebroso y describiendo las costumbres de esa época, la lectura es muy densa. Si leen la primera historia, olvídense de la película de Tim Burton con Johnny Depp y tengan presente el viejo corto de Disney.
For now, Irving's writing style is the best I have ever met. Extremely fit for young readers and writers to imitate his writing. This book is also a pretty neat condition for daily commutes.
Sleepy Hollow dizisi izlemekten büyük bir keyif aldığım hoş bir dizidir ve kitabını uzun zamandır okumak istiyordum. Dizi kitabından tamamen farklı olsa da ben bir nebze andırıyor olmalı diye düşünmüştüm ancak tahmin ettiğimden tamamen farklı bir kurguyla karşılaştım. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Türkçeye hem Başsız Süvari hem de Uykulu Kuytu Söylencesi olarak çevrilmiş. Ben öncelikle İngilizce baskıdan okudum ve sonrasında Türkçe baskıdan hikayeye tekrar baktım. Türkçe baskıda bazı cümleleri anlaması güçtü ve öyle zor kelimeler kullanılmıştı ki anlamını bilmiyordum 🧐 Kitapta 2 hikaye yer alıyor: Başsız Süvari ve Rip Van Winkle. Ben ilk hikayeyi pek sevmedim ancak Rip Van Winkle'ı keyifle okudum. İlk hikayede küçük bir yere öğretmen olarak gelen Ichabod'un parasına göz diktiği güzel bir kız uğruna başına gelenleri anlatıyor. Açıkçası başına gelen her şeyi hak edecek tarzda bir karakterdi 😂 Hem öğrencilerini dövüyor olması hem de kişiliğini umursamadığı biriyle sırf parası bol diye evlenme isteği beni karakterden soğutmak için yeterliydi. Yine de ilginç bir hikayeydi çünkü beklediğim bir gidişata sahip değildi. İkinci hikayede ise iyi ancak tembel bir adamın başına gelen tuhaf bir olay anlatılıyor. Adı Rip Van Winkle olan bu adamın hikayesi oldukça keyifliydi. Ayrıca tarihsel olayların az da olsa aktarılması güzeldi. Washington Irving özellikle gotik edebiyat açısından önemli görülen bir yazar ve Amerikan edebiyatın babalarından kabul ediliyor, sırf bu bilgi bile yazarın okunması için yeterli. Eğer gotik edebiyattan hoşlanıyorsanız bakmanızı tavsiye ederim. İthaki'nin baskısında daha çok hikaye içeriyor o baskıya da bakabilirsiniz.
Since I was reading 'The Spellbook of Katrina van Tassel' - a reimagining of this story - it occurred to me that I hadn't read the original for decades, so I picked it up. I think a lot of the snarky humour in the narrative of the original must have gone over my head when I was nine or ten, but it certainly found its audience this time. It's very much a told story. There's no dialogue and all characters are presented through a third person omniscient narrator who gives you the impression that while he sympathises with the characters, he finds them all slightly ridiculous too. It's also more of a novelette or long short story. That said, there is as much story as there needs to be and it's a lot of fun. Less a ghost story, than a tale of vying suitors - neither of which is much cop, nor is the heiress to be honest - in a battle of wits, set in a ghost story frame. Designed to entertain not to chill, with just enough of a question mark over the conclusion for a satisfying ending. Given the time it is set and was written in, it does use several terms that we wouldn't countenance in literature today without, it must be noted, ever delving into pejoratives. I make no excuses for these occasional wince inducing terms, they're not right not is any of the casual racism or sexism (again far less than I was expecting). However times do change and to remove historical context, however unsavoury, would rather defeat the point. Avoid if you're very sensitive to such terms. Otherwise, this was very enjoyable and I'd recommend it as a light hearted read.
Wie viele von euch ist mir "Sleepy Hollow" zunächst als Film mit Johnny Depp aufgefallen. Ich schaue ihn jedes Jahr gerne zu Halloween und so fand ich es nur angemessen, auch mal der Vorlage eine Chance zu geben - die übrigens mit nur 100 Seiten wirklich schnell weggelesen werden kann. Also bitte nicht wundern, wenn das hier auch ein halber Filmvergleich wird.
Ichabod Crane, seines Zeichens Lehrer im beschaulichen Sleepy Hollow und leidenschaftlicher Leser von Schauerliteratur bei Sonnenuntergang, beschließt eines Tages, dass er das Herz der holden Katrina van Tassel erobern will. Auf einem Ball macht er sich große Hoffnungen, doch leider begegnet ihm nur der Kopflose Reiter, der ihn in die Nacht hinausjagt. Das ist im Prinzip die gesamte Story - ihr merkt also, für den Film musste schon ein wenig aufgeplustert werden.
Was ich jedoch nicht erwartet habe, war die sautrockene Komik Irvings. Darf ich euch ein Beispiel präsentieren:
"[...] he would have passed a pleasant life of it, in despite of the Devil and all his works, if his path had not been crossed by a being that causes more perplexity to mortal man than ghosts, goblins, and the whole race of witches put together, and that was—a woman."
Höchst amüsant, das Ganze. Ich denke, die Geschichte hat durchaus Potenzial, wie Dickens "Weihnachtsmärchen" jedes Jahr gelesen zu werden. Ich habe mir direkt eine Ausgabe gesucht, in denen Arthur Rackham seinen besonderen Zauber gewoben hat und es gibt auch diese ultraschicke Ausgabe von Blackletter Press, aber für ein Reinschnuppern empfehle ich euch das Gutenberg-Projekt, da ist sie nämlich kostenlos.

Letztes Jahr habe ich mich mit dieser Geschichte köstlich amüsiert, also habe ich mir die Black Letter Press Ausgabe gekauft. Wie so oft ist die Kurzgeschichte "Rip van Winkle" mit dabei.
Hierbei geht es um - ihr werdet es erraten - Rip van Winkle, ein hilfsbereiter, aber fauler Lebemann, der vor seiner keifenden Frau in die Berge fliegt. Dort begegnet er einem komischen Gesellen, der ihn zu seinen Freunden auf einen Drink mitnimmt. Rip trinkt einen zuviel, pennt in den Wäldern ein und wacht verkatert auf. Er schlurft zurück in sein Dorf, wo jedoch inzwischen 20 Jahre vergangen sind...
Spannend, mysteriös und genauso bissig geschrieben wie "Sleepy Hollow" ist "Rip van Winkle" tatsächlich eine prima Ergänzung zum gruselig-geheimnisvollen Thema. Ich glaube, ich muss mal die anderen Geschichten aus dem "Skizzenbuch", aus dem die beiden ursprünglich stammen, recherchieren.

Two mystical stories written two centuries ago by Washington Irving. We tend to judge these works in the spirit of today, and abstract them from the time and place where they were born. And, of course, the style and the story itself can be considered strange, because to this day there have been several literary works and their pictorial adaptations that thoroughly reworked the figures of the two short stories. That is why we automatically compare these works with them, and do not evaluate them by themselves. I liked both stories, even if the Rip van Winkle was a little better. Rip has an adventure in the mountains one night, during which twenty years actually pass. To him, it seems like only a few hours, during which the world completely changes around him. We cannot withdraw ourselves from the development of the world, nothing can stop it. The only way to go is to fit in, or as in Rip's case, fit back in. I haven't seen the film version of The Legend of Sleepy Valley, so I have nothing to compare it to, I can only evaluate it as an independent work. A lot of people don't like it because it deviates from the story of the movie. For me, the short novel is about trying to break out of the reality of the present, escaping from it into a dream world, which then becomes reality.

En «Rip Van Winkle» el protagonista s'adorm al bosc un dia que ha sortit de cacera, essent subdit de la monarquia britànica, i desperta vint anys més tard, com a ciutada llure de la república nordamericana.
Dos històries molt conegudes, sobre tot la primera, que combinen un estil descriptiu i costumbrista dels llocs i els paissatges on succeeix l'acció, situacions fantàstiques i un to humoristic i irònic. Washington Irving va viure a caball dels segles XVIII i XIX per les terres de Nova York i es considera el primer escriptor estatunidenc.
L'edició té les coses bones i les coses dolentes d'una edició escolar; per una banda compta amb una molt bona introducció que contextualitza detalladament l'obra, així com uns exercicis al final del llibre, però físicament llueix poc, a excepció de les magnífiques il·lustracions de Gary Kelley. Una lectura interessant i agraïda.

beş yıldızlık bir kitap gibi gelmeyebilir herkese, bunu belirterek başlayayım yoruma. bu kitabı derste Can hocanın kısaca bahsetmesi nedeniyle aldım, okudum (o sevdiyse, övdüyse beğeneceğimden şüphe etmeden başlarım okumaya genelde). ateşin ışığı etrafında anlatılan o ürkünç hikayelerin büyüsü beni aşırı etkiliyor. batıl inancı bile olmayan biriyim. cin peri hayalet canavar maalesef gerçek olmadıklarını bilerek büyüdüğüm detaylar. ama mistik şeyleri okurken aşırı keyif alıyorum. mitoloji okumak gibi. gerçek olmadığının farkındasın ama hayal gücü öylesine sınırsız ki tahmin edilebilir tek bir detay yok. hem insan her gün duyduğu gördüğü şeylerden sıkılıyor bir müddet sonra. bilmiyorum. bana iyi geldi. hastayken limonlu çay mandalina önerirler. ben önerilere kulak asmayıp kendi tedavimi bu kitapla yaptım :) (hala hastayım, ne tedavisi) okuyun derim, bağımsızlık savaşının olduğu dönemleri Amerika'nın Amerika olabildiği zamanı anlamaya da yardımcı zannediyorum. neyse bu yavaşlıkla diğer kitaba başlasam iyi olacak. hastayken hiç ilerlemiyor sanki sayfalar :(
Reconozco que las historias breves no son lo mío, pero con la de Sleepy Hollow tenía mucha curiosidad por conocer la historia más allá de la película. Es un relato que destaco principalmente por su ambientación, tan sombría y peculiar. En cuanto a la trama, no me ha calado especialmente, dándome la sensación de que es una trama que podría haberse aprovechado mucho más, pero me ha gustado ver las grandes diferencias que tiene con la adaptación de Tim Burton. Es una historia de leyendas, intereses personales y misterio hasta el final. Me habría gustado una conclusión diferente, pero repito que me ha merecido la pena por la ambientación. En cuanto a la historia de Rip van Winkle, es más dinámica y ha sabido mantener mi atención hasta el final. Es entretenida y fluye más amena que la de Sleepy Hollow. Sé que es normal por el año en que se escribió, pero dejadme decir que es una verdadera pena cómo ponen a la mujer del protagonista, tachándola de mala y manipuladora en todo momento, cuando toda la preocupación de él es su persona y pasear con su perro... En fin, otra época.
