Rachel Howzell's second novel The View from Here focuses on the beauties and hardships of marriage; the betrayals and promises made between husbands and wives; and the grief of one woman haunted by secrets.
Nicole Baxter has always tried to control every element of her life, but that control is slipping away. She has issues. Abandonment issues. Marital issues. Conception issues. And she thinks her house in the hills is haunted. It doesn't help that her husband Truman spelunks and climbs, making her worry more with each adventure he takes. As the two grow apart, Nicole makes decisions that may ultimately shatter her fragile marriage.
Her life changes on the afternoon she receives a phone call from the harbor. During a scuba dive, Truman disappears. No one—not his diving instructor, not the Coast Guard—can find him. Is he still alive? Or is grief making her believe the impossible?
Nicole and Truman Baxter seem to have an ideal marriage. They are a gorgeous couple living what is to most, an enviable life. This comes crashing down when adventure addicted Truman, has a diving accident off the coast of Catalina Island. We find Nicole descending into a grief driven breakdown. By that time the reader has enough of Nicole's background to know she lost both her parents and likes to be in control. Through flashbacks, we get glimpses into Nicole and Truman's marriage and seemingly perfect life. There are some elements of spookiness in that there is a ghost story thrown in which was quite effective. I liked Nicole and just wanted to jump in and help her. I think most readers felt or will feel this way.
Am I seriously going crazy? What is wrong with me? Many of us have asked ourselves this question many times, and it is no different for Nicole.
Nicole has been hit hard many times in her life by devastating losses from early life until now. When the last blow strikes her, she starts believing she may actually succumb to insanity. Paranoia reaches new highs as Nichole believes her two best friends are out to get her and lock her up.
The characters in this book are wonderfully written. You will love Nicole and Truman, and hate the correct people by the end of the book. Everything falls into place as it should. The book, I believe, handles all of the "adult" situations very tastefully. We as adults know what is happening, but the author does not need to boost sales with trashy sex scenes. The quality of the storyline will do that for her.
I, as a reader of mostly fantasy, found myself lost in this real world book, and loved every second of it. I wanted to cry when Nicole did. That is a sign of incredible writing. Do yourself a favor, and get a copy of the book.
Nicole always seemed to have some anxiety. She wasn’t exactly jealous of the women her husband included in his circle of friends but the attention he gave them and the little time he spent with her would make anyone wonder whether anything was going on. At times she was a ticking time bomb; I don’t know how she and others survived.
For quite a bit during the book I didn’t know what to make of it, however, toward the end, it came together.
Definitely a story of suspense – a page-turner. Original. I liked it.
I'm not going to rate or review this book since I really couldn't get into it enough to finish it. It just really did not grab my attention or hold it. The jumping around lost me, and well, I just finally had to give up.
I really enjoyed the first book of hers I read but this drove me nuts and I packed it in. I got so worn down with needing to keep on looking American pop culture stuff up I didn't know or understand till it became beyond tiresome and I gave up. The first word I was baffled by was Sorenifib and I was still clueless after looking it up since it also listed Sorafenib on Google so I had no idea what was right and what was wrong. I didn't know what Shirley Jackson's Hill House referred to nor what Red Vine is and by the time I got to that I was cheesed off looking things up. I have no idea who Lucy Ricardo is though I've vaguely heard of Claire Huxtable. Why mention so many totally American things that anyone in other countries (even speaking the same language) just wouldn't have any understanding of ?? I didn't underatand why her hubby left the room after they made love (??)and she could do with helping to make it less baffling by adding paragraph breaks a bit more often. I wasn't sure if Jake was supposed to be the guardian angel she referred to before she went to his house and I was lost as to why her den light was shining and why she mentions it. It also jumps around and I didn't really believe she would be messing around with another man on the quiet. I did chuckle at the hooker mention and also the dedication to her daughter but other than that it was WAY too hard-going for me.
Rachel's novel is a page turner from the very first chapter! 'The View from Here' is a riveting tale that demonstrates the complexities of our relationships while exploring the inner turmoil of remorse. A love story and a spine tingling ghost story all at the same time; this novel effectively delves into the bonds of love, loyalty, friendship and betrayal.
It isn't difficult to empathize with Nicole, the main character in this novel. She is seeking resolution and absolution following the disappearance of her husband, while dealing with a torment which is almost too much for her to endure. She is plagued by supernatural events that are exacerbated by overmedication and exhaustion, while her friends endeavor to assist her through the ordeal. This well crafted and descriptive narrative will have you on the edge of your seat in suspense!
I really enjoyed this book. The author told the story of Nicole,an African American married woman that suffered from panic attacks and anxiety. Nicole suffered tragedy early in life which lead to her fear of life of general.
Nicole is married to a wonderful man Truman. They have been married for over 11 years. Their relationship has always been strong, but now more tragedy is causing Nicole to lose the rest of her sanity.
The author did a great job of making Nicole's fears seam real. I was really engaged from beginning to end.
This was a good book. The ending caught me by surprise. A woman is widowed when he husband dies deep sea diving. Her mourning is marked by not only visions of seeing him but things moved about in her home, a word puzzle rearranged every few days on her refrigerator, his hairs in the sink. She fears she is losing her mind, and doesn't know who to trust.
I finished this book based on sheer willpower. I felt determined that it must be going somewhere. For those readers who stick with it, it does eventually arrive. Unfortunately, the actual resolution is so long in coming that most readers will give up in frustration and admittedly, although the resolution is clever, it lacks the payoff because of this delay. Overall, a disappointing read.
Storyline: Rachel, I don’t know HOWzell you did it! But, somehow you took a potentially depressing premise and made it both very entertaining and enjoyable.
Nicole and Truman are quickly approaching their 11 year anniversary. They have a beautiful house in the hills, take trips all over the world and have great jobs. Even with all of this, the two of them have grown apart and the rift is getting wider and deeper as time goes on.
Truman has become somewhat of an adrenaline junkie and in preparation for one his latest adventures, there’s an accident and he’s gone missing. She’s haunted by her choices and her past with Truman and her possible her future without Truman.
Or is he really gone…?
Nicole must fight her inner demons and overcome her grief before it destroys her…
Grammar/Spelling: There were no issues with the grammar and spelling.
Character Development: I have not had the unfortunate experience (*knocks on wood*) of losing anyone that is near and dear to me in real life, but I truly felt it with Nicole’s experience. I could see that she was an average woman, one who felt betrayed by her husband and who was lonely; Nicole wasn’t a super hero capable of leaping over devastation and pain in a single bound. Nicole went through the stages of grief like any normal person would and asked the same questions that anybody else would. “Why did this happen? How can you people move on like he was never here?!”
Writing Style: The writing style was smooth and engaging. I really felt like I connected with Nicole and her loneliness, depression and grief. I could also feel the pain, frustration and sadness of that her best friends felt as they watched their friend fall through the emotional floor of depression.
I really liked the method that Ms. Howzell used to create a series of flashbacks to develop the relationship between Nicole and Truman to show that they really did have a wonderful relationship and, like any other couple, had their ups and downs.
Continuity: No issues at all with continuity.
Overall Rating: 4+
I really and truly enjoyed The View from Here by the lovely Ms. Rachel Howzell. Even as Nicole spirals downward and out of control, it would be incredibly easy for anyone to relate to her pain and loss. I believe The View From Here would be a wonderfully therapeutic read for someone who has recently lost a loved one and it’s definitely a great read for everyone else!

Can a book hit too close to home? This is a brilliant story about a woman whose charmed life is shattered by the sudden and seemingly inexplicable death of her husband. The main character is only 37 and is devastated.
I love this author and I have have loved every previous work of hers but I simply had to stop. She gets it right too right...
Nicole and Truman are about to hit their twelth year as a married couple. Though they both managed to overcome the troubles of their childhood and lead successful careers, live in a nice house and all that jazz, not all things are as golden as they would like to. Not only is Truman spending the majority of his day working, chasing adventures, and going after his hobbies, and thereby ditching date nights with his wife left and right, Nicole also suspects him of having an affair.
Nicole struggles with her constant worries about her husband. She feels left alone in a house that creeps her out, and left behind while Truman is away. Things take a turn for the worse, and before the couple finally has the chance to reconcile and make things work again, Truman falls victim to an accident, declared presumably dead.
Haunted by guilt and regret, Nicole falls into a dark pit of depression and confusion. As much as she tries to cope, the events happening around her keep on pulling her deeper and deeper into the abyss of insanity. Not even her sister-in-law, or her best friend can get her back on track, or the help she needs.
But are they really trying?

Nice, quick read. The story started off pretty well, but I was a bit thrown off with being bombarded with so many things happening at once. Or rather, within a matter of a few pages. The flow/pacing of the story seemed a bit off at times, in my opnion. Especially the ending felt too abrupt. Then there were also a few plot holes/lose strands left after the last pages.
I did enjoy that the majority of the characters seemes shady and with ulterior motives at one point or the other, and that my own suspicions untilmately were proven right. The story-line was a bit predictable, though.
This was a stunning book. Rachel Howzell writes beautifully, her characterisation is fabulous & her narrative structure is fantastic.
Nicole Baxter is foundering in her marriage to adrenaline junkie Truman. She is lonely & angry & craving love. She wants desperately to save her marriage, but before things can be set to right, Truman is lost in a freak accident.
What follows is one woman's incredibly touching journey with grief. Nicole's life begins to spiral out of control & she begins to question her sanity.
Nicole is a wonderful character. Her story is told with such gut-wrenching honesty & humour, whether it is travelling through a sad patch or a triumphant one. I felt everything she felt & wanted her to win her life over again.
This story is not what you might think though. I won't give any more away, other that I did not see that ending coming.
This review was posted after receiving a complimentary copy of this book. By no means was this review influenced by those circumstances.
This book wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it would be more about a haunting than someone's grief manifesting itself. And I certainly thought it would be more than your typical someone faked a haunting to drive someone else crazy so they could get all the money story. That's very cliche and has been played out in countless Lifetime TV movies. Also, some spots in this book just seemed like the author was dragging it on for no reason. After a while, I lost interest in the main character and no longer felt sympathy for her. Having said all that, the book is not a total loss. There are some really good pieces of writing in here just as there are some really bad ones too. Since I downloaded this book when it was offered for free, I give it 3 stars... but only because I didn't have to pay for it. If I had paid for it, I think I might have dropped the rating to 2 stars. There is better out there.

Very interesting book. Have you ever lived in a house you considered haunted by spirits but you lter come to find out someone is purposely trying to make you think your crazy for monetary gain? This is exactly what is going on in this story. If you can imagine your marriage once seeming perfect but later feeling as though you are drifting apart and then the unthinkable happens, this is exactly how this novel unfolds. I really enjoyed this novel and would highly recommend it. It was well written did not find a lot of errors, I think I can recall a couple but nothing that diminshes the story and I have to say this was great read!
I was mostly really into this story. A woman dealing with the possibility that her husband is dead and haunting her, and trying to move on despite all of the craziness surrounding her. That being said, the ending to the book was totally batsh*t crazy. I'm not going to have any spoilers here, but it really wasn't believable how it all went down. Granted, I didn't solve the mystery myself till about 80% in, so kudos to the author, but the final 20% and especially the last 10% where the big reveal happened, I just found myself irritated. So...3 stars. Intriguing book, sloppy ending.
This is a mystery wrapped up in a heart breaking story of grief. After her husband dies, Nicole is bereft and her grief is soul crushing. This book is well written and as a relatively young widow earlier in my own life, I felt every single word like a dagger in my heart. I remembered how she felt, and the pain that is overwhelming.
It’s a hard book to read sometimes but I loved it!
A very well written story of a dysfunctional marriage, and a husband who goes missing and presumed dead. However You are never quite sure if he is alive or dead, or haunting his wife, or perhaps she is just losing her mind. Then again maybe her friends are conspiring to make her lose her mind. It will keep you guessing until the end.
When Nicole's adventure seeking husband disappears during a diving adventure, her recent marriage problems begin to haunt her..literally. Are the sightings of her missing husband manifested by grief, mental illness or is the haunting a reality?
This was a free book offering on Amazon for Kindle that is now available for .99 Speach and lending are enabled.
This was a pretty good book. A little bit creepy, with the haunting stuff. The story is about Nicole and her husband Truman. Their marriage is having trouble and Truman is spending more and more time away from home, and more and more time doing extreme things like climbing Everest and learning to scuba dive. Nicole's world is falling apart and she's questioning her sanity.
It took me a little while to get into it because of some of the grammar errors, but once I was enthralled, it was hard to put it down and I hard lots of late night- falling asleep with the book on my chest-waking up attempting to continue... on and on. : ) Great book with suspenseful twists and turns. Loved the incorporation of ghosts too! Good read!
I feel like this must have been a free one on the kindle but I REALLY liked this. An interesting look at relationships, what they do to people, what people do to each other, grief and betrayal. I realize that makes it sound pretty heavy but it was a quick and engaging read with an ending I wasn't really expecting. Got totally sucked in.
The storyline caught my attention. I related to the main character so it managed to hold my attention but by the end I was just glad it was over. The ending was visable to me far beyond the final chapters. Did I like it, for the most part. Would I recommend it, no. Would I read it again, no.
I really enjoyed this book. It had so much to offer. There was a touch of romance, mystery, betrayal, and even a little bit of horror. I had the book figured out by the middle but it was still such a great read. It was worth my time and I downloaded it on my Kindle for free.
I really enjoyed this book. It was something a little different than I have been reading lately and it was hard to put down. I will definately be adding this author's other books to my reading list!! Really good read!!
Good Read about grief, abandonment issues,a great marriage torn apart by a promotion & extreme sports. A wwomen trying to find herself in the middle of all this. It was slow at first but it did get better, and the villan wasn't who I expected it to be.
An African American woman loses her wildly successful husband in an accident at sea. She struggles with grief, guilt, loss, and psychic sightings. A page turner. Excellent plotline and character development.
A great read. Nothing like I expected although I kind of guessed at the culprit. I kind felt like I understood the main character. She was strong and weak all at the same time. Definitely read this book.
It was a captivating story and you could relate (even if only imagining the loss of your husband). The story sucks you in and you really get inside the heads of the main character and how she is feeling. I loved the twist at the end. I didn't expect it. I had other ideas of how it might turn out.
It was written very well. I honestly could not stop reading! I loved the story line. I was actually pleased with this free download, and I intend to read more from this author.
