A surprisingly fun read for what is basically fanfic. For someone unfamiliar with the setting (Elite and Oolite), the main strength of the story are the characters who are pretty well fleshed out. And for someone who _is_ familiar with the setting, the story is riddled with fun and entertaining details - fleshing out the world familiar from the computer games.

I cannot pretend that my attitude towards the novel was not affected by my personal relationship with Elite/Oolite. I played Elite when I was in my teens and Oolite later in my life to return to that world once more. And it does not hurt that Cobra Courier, a ship that I created for Oolite many years ago, plays a part in the book as well. :)

The main downside is the fact that the novella is riddled with typos and misspells (hanger<>hangar, too<>to etc.). Another point that is clearly meant as humour, but may hurt the readers' immersion, are the references to the technology (computer names) and movies (2001: A Space Odyssey) of the era, used in different context, but recognisable to those who lived through the 1980s. If you can look past those details, you'll be in for a fun ride.

Book #1 of the Oolite Saga.

After reading Robert Holdstock's "The Dark Wheel" as an official introduction to the Elite universe, I was looking for more fiction to flesh out the fictional universe of the game Elite:Dangerous that I am currently playing. Having played the original Elite back in the 80's, I was interested in reading somewhat chronologically through the Elite fiction and saw Drew Wagar's five book Oolite Saga recommended on the Elite Dangerous forums.

The story here is somewhat similar to that in the Dark Wheel which was clearly a strong inspiration for it. It is short and exciting and sets two main protagonists on a perilous interstellar quest to save each other and perhaps the entire Galactic Co-operative of Worlds. It sets the stage for the coming books in the series, but also stands as an enjoyable read in its own right. It is a quick and easy read that will have you moving quickly over the the next book in the series, "Mutabilis".

A good, fast read from a promising new Indie writer in the Science Fiction Genre. The book drew me in and kept me reading finishing it in less than a day. It was the perfect break from the serious history textbooks I normally get bogged down in. Moving onto the sequel today! The ending was a little anti climactic I thought and that's what knocked it down from 4 stars to 3.5 for me, but other than that it was very good.
