About the author

a Swiss expressionist painter, designer, teacher, writer and theorist associated with the Bauhaus (Staatliche Bauhaus) school. Together with German-American painter Lyonel Feininger and German sculptor Gerhard Marcks, under the direction of German architect Walter Gropius, Itten was part of the core of the Weimar Bauhaus.

I became interested in reading Itten's books after seeing the Bauhaus exhibit at MOMA. His students' work impressed me.

And the explanation of his teaching methods did too--you have to like someone who states, "Respect for human beings is the beginning and end of all education."

He wants his students to see contrasts, texture, rhythm and form, and the exercises he creates for them emphasize this. Perhaps the fact that there is a separate book for color made the black-and-whiteness of the work shown seem somewhat repetitive after awhile. But there is a lot to think about in his approach to art and craft. And the fact that he makes no value judgement about "art" vs "craft" in the act of creation is also a plus.

Though I wouldn't try to recreate all of Itten's lessons, the book is worth looking at for anyone interested in the process of design.

Itten in questo libro riporta il suo metodo e fa un resoconto dei suoi insegnamenti.
Per Itten tutto parte dallo studio dei contrasti e del chiaroscuro, segue lo studio del colore, dei materiali e delle texture, poi la comprensione delle forme di base, il ritmo ed infine lo studio delle forme espressive e soggettive.
Alla base dei suoi insegnamenti c'è questa affermazione riportata anche sul retro di copertina:
"Affinché un'emozione possa tradursi in espressione attraverso una linea o una superficie, essa deve per prima cosa risuonare nella creatività stessa dell'individuo."
Per Itten la raffigurazione non è qualcosa che ha a che fare solo con la vista e la mano, ma qualcosa che si assapora prima con tutti i sensi per poi essere interiorizzata e quando il momento è propizio espressa sotto forma di raffigurazione. Il suo discorso può essere ulteriormente semplificato dicendo che se prima non provi con tutto il tuo essere non sarai capace di realizzare un opera efficace.
Itten è per me indubbiamente un maestro, il libro è utile sia per insegnanti che per allievi, suggerisce un metodo ed un certo modo di intendere l'arte che può durare per molto molto tempo.
Libro straconsigliato.

Якщо чесно мало розумію сенс книжки. Коли розділити її окремо на текст та ілюстрації то відповідно можна отримати ознайомчий флаєр курсу дизайну в Баухаузі або збірку робіт студентів. Очікував більш практичного наповнення, яке б частково дозволило відчути себе студентом школи Баухаузу. Іттен концентрується на тому, що варто змінити підхід до навчання, і показує, як він цього досяг на практиці, де студенти виконували руханки, малювали кислий лимон та могли з памʼяті намалювати не тільки реалістичну текстуру але й зберегти особистісне сприйняття, як при малюванні з натури. Звичайно цікаво розглядати незвичні роботи студентів, але відсутність ланцюжку мета-порівняння-аналіз-висновок, або його фрагментарність обмежує сприйняття та засвоєння ідей.

Це книга це артифакт епохи Баугауза. Вона безперечно дозволить зазирнути в шпарину на становлення сучасного графічного дизайну.

Розглядати книгу як джерело практичних теоретичних знань не варто. Дизайнерам початківцям вона мало допоможе. Краще вкластися в "Графічний дизайн: нові основи" Еллен Лаптон та Дженніфер Коул Філліпс.

Я добре розумів, що купую та берусь читати. Але навіть враховуючи це, в книзі замало інформації. Власне тому й знизив трохи оцінку.

«Наука дизайну та форми» — шанована класика дизайну, яка знайомить нас з методологією курсу Йоганнеса Іттена у школі Баугауз. Однак, незважаючи на свою назву, книга не містить ґрунтовної теоретичної бази чи покрокових інструкцій до практичних вправ. Натомість Іттен представляє низку тез, які окреслюють фундаментальні принципи, ідеї та концепції, що супроводжуються численними прикладами зі студентських робіт.

Design and Form is a revered design classic that offers valuable insights into the methodology of Johannes Itten's course at the Bauhaus school. However, despite its title, the book does not provide a comprehensive theoretical framework or practical exercises. Instead, Itten presents a series of theses that outline fundamental principles, ideas, and concepts, accompanied by numerous examples from student work.

Nonetheless, Design and Form remains a valuable resource for designers. While it may not offer specific applied skills, the book serves as a guide for shaping a designer's worldview and way of thinking. Through technical aspects of design such as light and shadow, color, material and texture, shape, and rhythm, Itten encourages experimentation and the exploration of personal forms of expression. As he writes, "Among my students, those who chose their own, different path thanks to their intuition turned out to be the best."

Oh my Itten.

I read this. Book as part of a research study for one of the Bauhaus masters. My pick in for the studio course study fell on Johannes Itten. I’m an architecture student and the subject for this studio is the bauhaus. I cannot put my finger on why have I chosen him in particular but I think his oddities fill in since with mine. He was an odd person but a brilliant one at that. I’ve read this book from skin to skin over and over again till I have soaked up with every sliver of a word that he’s written. He talks it about spirituality in he body and mind and the creative imaginative inner child dwelling your insides and how he/she mustn’t be inhibited in unleashing the inner most radiance of creativeness that he she beholds.

Humane is what I would call out to his work. He got in touch with Mother Nature from all aspects until he became one with it or so I see it. No matter how spiritual he has gotten he still spoke to me for you feel it in your work and intuition it oozes out in its own in a way that your mind needn’t even think about it and just follow the movements of your hands and fingers.

He is one who has the capacity to stir up and spark the well of endless inspiration so as to touch at originality and nature in a way that no other could do.

I can really see him as my teacher. Much respect for him. And the fact that he was affected by japanese ink art I was all the more humbled by him.

Зустріла відгук до цієї книги, що вона розчарувала малою кількістю практичних порад. І напевне, саме з нього випливатиме моє основне враження: це точно не практичний довідник.

І ось тут я, багато років гризучи себе, що досі не прочитала Іттена, раптом зраділа, що не взялася за цю книгу повноцінно десь на зорі роботи у візуальний сфері – саме тоді, коли хочеш, щоб тобі в руки просто дали робочі інструменти.

Є відчуття, що "Наука..." більш корисна саме тим, хто працює з викладанням, оскільки показує, як Іттен формував навчальний шлях (але, знову ж таки, показує досить фрагментарно).
Інша ж її важлива сторона – це майже філософська та ідейна база безспосередньої роботи з візуалом.

Залишає цікаве враження, коли мінімум тексту, ілюстрованого практичним втіленням учнями ідей вчителя, викликає тривалий післясмак та потребу дати собі час на обдумування прочитаного. І потребу до цього тексту повертатися.

This isn't the kind of book you can say, "I finished it, now I know..." No way—it's an endless flow of meaning. Each time you read it, you discover something new.

The book is very practical, brief, well-written, and perfectly structured/organized. Yet, somehow, after finishing it, you don't have a feeling of completeness. Instead of knowledge, you leave with ideas—maybe even a roadmap—but the path is one you must walk yourself. I believe that to truly understand this book, you need to follow each step, repeat each exercise, and read and reread, noticing and learning more with each pass.

It's kinda your own private Bauhaus class. Try to repeat the tasks, and imagine yourself as a student learning to create the future under the shadow of impending war.

کتاب ایتن طرح و فرم. ایتن تجر��ه های خودشو که طی سالهای زیادی بر اساس آموزش به هنرجویان کسب کرده در قالب گزارش در این کتاب به تحریر در آورده. هدف این کتاب نسبت به نیاز خواننده متغیر هستش و به نظرم اینجور کتابها ارزش بیشتری دارن.ایتن سعی نکرده کتابی آموزشی در اختیار ما قرار بده که اونا رو عملی انجام بدیم. بلکه این کتاب مثل یک دفتر خاطراتی از کشفیات و تجربیات ایتن در زمینه فرم و شکل هست .

A very enjoyable summary of the Bauhaus Basic Course by Johannes Itten. A description of the syllabus and brief history is given, followed by more in depth description of topics. Areas such as representation of contrasts, color theory, materials and textures, rhythm, expressive/subjective forms are covered with a multitude of examples for each. The reader is left with a solid grasp of the Bauhaus teachings and aesthetic. A must for those interest in Bauhaus.

I feel like I'm obligated to give this a review. Rarely does it occur that I instantly feel like I've grown while reading this book. Don't think I'd have to add anything, if you want to improve at art, just starting out or simply curious about art theory, this is a must read...

...with a big, big asterisk. Itten's beliefs were less than stellar, so do look into those before deciding you want to read this book or not.
