Dog Ear Cafe is a true-life adventure story about how one Aboriginal community beat the odds and defeated petrol sniffing. It tells of the Mt Theo Petrol Sniffing Program: a story of culture clash, of two lines of fire that meet in the desert night, of partnerships that cross Australia's racial divide.
As someone who work is a Warlpiri community I really wish I had read this before I’d moved out there. Warlpiri concepts that took me well over 12 months to fill understand are explained eloquently and succinctly. I’d heard many positive things about the Mt Theo program and this book has confirmed all those opinions and I have a reaffirmed respect for the WYDAC crew. Would recommend to all readers.
I read this book when I first started youth work in a remote community. It was given to me by a lady who visits & works beside community members, teaching sewing, reading etc.It was the best gift she gave me. The book is really inspiring and shows there is always hope & to never give up.When I've had struggles this book kept me going. I'm presently reading it again and can now reflect on my work and how far I've come since early days in community.A must read for anyone going to remote!!
A great first hand insight into the petrol sniffing in the 90’s and Andrews life work to stop it. A great easy ready that gives you a small window into the workings of indigenous culture
Inspiring and honest reflection on dealing with substance abuse/misuse and improving the health of individuals in remote communities. The writing has an easy flow to it, I finished the book in only a few days, and it explains events simply.
I would recommend this to anyone thinking of working or living in a remote NT community as it provides insights into remote community life that stretch far beyond the problem of petrol sniffing.
