This text provides an introduction to the fundamental structure of contemporary Italian language and its culture. This edition contains four new cultural collages which trace four topics, such as "The City", up to the present day. An accompanying audiotape for instructors is also available.
I loved this book when I used it in university many years ago. I am writing a review for it now because I am re-reading it in order to improve my Italian. I was once speaking it very well, to the amazement, in fact, of my cousins in Italy, thanks to this book.
It is a true textbook, yet that doesn't mean that it is too difficult to read without a professor. It has an excellent glossary, pages and pages of verb conjugations at the end, and easy explanations.
Having taken three courses in Spanish and one in German I can vouch that this was a superb text for what it was designed for. I taught myself through the book a couple of years ago and have referenced it very often since then. If you are seriously interested in learning Italian I would suggest that this book and the corresponding workbook be among the first resources that you purchase.
While this is a text book, I felt that it was really helpful for me to learn Italian. I like the way that the book is organized and it is written so that anyone age 13+ can understand. Great to get a head start on learning the Italian language and culture. :D
