A timeless tale about the most important choice on your journey through life. Carlisle, Alon, and Cassidon--known by all in the kingdom as the bravest and best knights who serve the King. But now the time has come to see which is truly worthy of the Princess's hand in marriage. As the Prince tells the three of the King's test, the knights understand the danger of the journey before them. And with only the King's song to guide them and one other to accompany them, they must prepare for the adventure of their lives--an adventure which may cost them everything. Who will the victor be? Carlisle the strongest, Alon the swiftest, or Cassidon the wisest? A kingdom waiting. A journey through darkness. Encounters with those who deceive. A finally... a victory. Elements you and your children will find not only in this delightful story, but also in your relationship with God. That's why the message shared here is such a powerful one. Your children will love finding out which knight won the fair maiden's hand. But you'll love how this timeless tale tells that there is One who knows how to guide them through this world. And He will journey with them all the way to their heavenly castle and the celebration to come. I've read and reread this story through the years but it merits a review.
This book was a Christmas gift and a story that touches my heart. I love the art and how the story flows.
I read this book to a group of high school students and they commented on the eeriness of the Hopenots.
I highly recommend this book.

Christian lesson wrapped in a fairy-tale setting. Enjoyable read, but wasn't totally taken with the illustrations.

The Hopenots were kinda chilling, as picture book villains go, so maybe not a bedtime story for young ones? And disturbing follow-up thought now that I'm writing this... if the Hopenots were once travelers who became lost in the forest, is that what has happened to the other two knights?

Non-Christians may find the religious symbolism a little heavy-handed. Although I think that, by now, Max Lucado's reputation is well enough established that people who pick up his books more or less know ahead of time what they are getting into.
Also, feminists may be up-in-arms that the princess is being married off to whoever passes the king's test, with no mention made in the story of her feelings on the matter.
However, I believe that the implication that those who are not physically strong or fast can compensate with intelligence and prudence, and the allusion to those people in our lives who will try to sway us from our personal convictions whatever they may be, and how we must therefore stand for something or we'll fall for anything, have a universality regardless of religious affiliation.
Did I like it? Yes. This story had the structure of a traditional fairy tale, which as a genre I tend to enjoy. The fact that I was able to find elements in the story that I think could be appreciated by readers who don't share my Christian background was an additional plus.
Would I reread it? I think that I would enjoy revisiting this book.
Would I recommend it? I personally feel that the book is worth checking out, though I know there will be some readers who dismiss it on principle, viewing it as Christian propaganda.

As a children’s book, I felt the illustrations could have been more engaging but overall I enjoyed the book. It uses the story of three knights in search of a King and his Kingdom to help the reader think about how they will reach God’s kingdom. The book does a great job of helping you think about who will help you come closer to God. For me, the message I received is that choosing the Holy Ghost, the scriptures, or Christ’s example as your guide will help you draw closer to God.

This is another great story by Max Lucado. Since the author always has a hidden meaning in his book, this one was great. Stay with the prince (Jesus) and you will get back to the king (God).
I would have liked to know what happened to the other 2 knights. Thus the 4 stars.

This is a wonderful book about choosing wisely, with an unexpected plot twist at the end. The daughter of the king is to be married and the three bravest, most successful knights are to undergo a test to determine which one will win her hand. The three are Carlisle the strongest, Alon the swiftest and Cassidon the wisest.
The test is to travel to the castle through a dangerous forest, with trees so dense and tall that the sunlight does not penetrate to the ground. Furthermore, the forest is the home of the mysterious Hopenots, creatures that were known to foil travelers. Three times a day the king would move to the exterior wall of the castle and play a song on his flute to guide the knights through the forest. There are only two such flutes, the other owned by the prince.
Each knight was allowed to select one companion and all three teams departed at the same time. Many days later, two people emerged from the forest, one knight and his companion had managed to travel through the unknown.
The victor and the strategy that he used is an excellent lesson for young people. It demonstrates that many problems are best solved by thinking hard about them and adopting a sound strategy. It is a lesson that children need to learn and is well presented here.

Great story about a knight's quest, the value of wisdom, and an allegory for the Christian pilgrim's life. My son loved this story, but the young kids were afraid of the "bad guys" in the story; best to read sometime well before bedtime.

So I love this book. It's blatantly Christian, but for a story that is basically told as a fairy tale? Wonderful. I still bawl every time I read it.

The story is simple enough: three knights have a race through a dangerous wood in order to win the hand of the beautiful princess. The greatest peril of the wood is mocking voices... this leads into plenty of other Christian symbols that hopefully will be appreciated for what they are. Some Christians may complain of just how their God is used, but I think they're just trying to whine. It's enchanting as a fairy tale and as a powerful message.

Ok, so I was thinking about childrens books today. Books that I have really loved over the years. Many of you know I wanted to write a childrens book and I'm still thinking about it, mostly need to just sit down and do it. Anyways, this book makes me cry EVERY time I read it. I bought it for my husband as a wedding gift and I still thing its the most appropriate thing I ever bought him. I read it to all the children who come to my house, whether they like it or not :) But really, it is wonderful and it warms my heart to think that He is with us all the way.

A king issues a quest to win the hand of his daughter in marriage. Three knights are ready, but first they must complete the quest and no one is really sure what the outcome will be.

This is a lovely story that always has truth woven into its tale. Max Lucado does a good job of giving you a seemingly predictable outcome and then having you surprised, but glad at the end.

This is my favorite book that Max Lucado has written. It illustrates in a story that is very engaging and that even children can understand the dangers of this world and that the best way to be able to return and live with our Father in Heaven is by learning to hear and to follow the voice of Christ.

My kids love reading Max Lucado's books and it's very easy to teach them about the Savior. The young women love them! I use to give them away as birthday presents and I haven't for awhile but they want me to keep doing it!

Everyone should have a copy of this book in their home, especially if you're a Latter-Day Saint, like me. I love the symbolism, the basic story line, and the ending is very touching. I can't ever read it without crying.

With You All the Way is an amazing book! I love this book because it's a good christian book saying that when you feel alone or your lost, God's always there. This book makes me feel good when I'm hurt. I've read this book several times and I'm going to keep reading it.

One of my all-time favorite Lucado children's books. Such a simple message, but poignant. Small children understand that God is always with us. Adults are reminded oh-so-sweetly.
