Larrisa and Dante were good together. Larissa felt connected to the woods but could not explain her pull, in comes Dantie who is her guardian and protector from a far who she is not aware of and is a wolf a sexy one at that. Their first encounter was steamy good and it only got better. I enjoy the quick read and i was entertain by the whole wolf vampire guardian thing that brought this book together that's my personal opinion. I am beginning to read more and more of this authors work and find myself enthrall by her short stories and style of writing these stories.

Have you ever felt like you someone is watching over you? Larissa has. She has always felt a connection to the woods near her home for some reason. She felt as though it was a sanctuary and didn't like people invading it for any reason. She's even put off college because she can't stand the idea of leaving. She's never completely understood what the draw is and feels like she's losing her mind. Until the day comes that she finally meets her protector.

The premise of the story is very interesting. It's a different, and refreshing, take on shifters and weres, with a new background that I haven't seen before. The story drew me in and kept me reading, wanting to know more. The characters were believable and interesting. The sisters are amusing and realistic while the dad is protective and gruff but funny. This interactions of the family are really well written and you can see yourself being part of that family.

There is a lot of narrative in the first half of this book. A lot of story is revealed through introspection and I wanted to get to the action or at least some more interaction. Once we do get to the action though, it is really compelling and keeps you turning the page to find out what happens. The saving grace is that the background that you're learning about through the narrative is interesting, and different, enough to keep you interested.

My biggest complaint about this book would have to be that it is too short. I wanted more. I felt as thought, with a full length book, these characters and the history that Ms. Monroe has given the shifters, could have been fleshed out more and deserved a longer story. Everything seemed to happen too fast. Some of the connections, and interactions, between some of the characters just happened entirely too fast to be believable. There is a couple of times when things are mentioned that are never fully explained, which left me confused and wondering. With the length of this story we were really only able to touch the surface and it would have been immensely more satisfying to go deeper.

If you enjoy paranormal stories with shapeshifters, you will enjoy this book. Dante is a complex character and Larissa is not a character to stand by and wait to be rescued. She'll jump right into the action head first. These characters, along with her family, will have you rooting for the happy ending and everything gets wrapped up nicely at the end. Check it out.

Larissa & Dante

"Something about the dark woods had always drawn her. It called to her very soul."

"She felt mesmerized by the oddly beautiful tone of his voice. Was it wrong to be turned on just from hearing a man speak? Larissa felt her cheeks darken at the sudden hot look in his eyes. It made her wonder if her face was giving away her thoughts of how deliciously sexy he looked. Her tongue flicked out to wet her lips, and she could have sworn she heard him moan."

"She looked into his haunted, amber brown eyes, and felt lost. It was as if something inside of her, in her very soul, recognized him and trusted him."

"The wheel of fate had spun and their destinies were the same."

Paranormal Romance
Rating: 4 Cups

Larissa refuses a marriage proposal. Although she likes Paxton, she feels no romantic attachment. Larissa feels a calling, a longing, for another - though she knows him not. She is drawn inexplicably to the dark woods. Unsettled, she follows where her heart leads, even though she has been instructed not to venture into its deep depths.

Unknown to Larissa, Dante prowls nearby. His sacred duty is to guard Larissa; to protect her from the vampires who thirst for her special, ancient blood. Dante agonizes because, against all the rules, he has fallen in love with Larissa. A taboo bond grows that neither he nor Larissa can deny.

Dante finds Larissa near his home. Somehow she has circumvented the protective wards that should prevent human trespass. Their mutual attraction and need overwhelms all reason. But meanwhile, elsewhere, the voices of other guardians are being silenced. Vampires systematically, ruthlessly bent on extermination are drawing ever nearer.

This dark, exciting tale held me spellbound in its tenacious grip. The impending sense of doom is palatable throughout and I literally ached at times for Larissa and Dante as events unfold and they are swept along by fate and circumstance. The secondary characters seem real to me, too. Larissa is fortunate to be blessed with such supportive and loving parents and siblings. Truly, this is an exciting addition to the paranormal romance genre.

From a storyteller point of view, I was completely captivated by the set-up of this novella. It held intrigue and promise, and something that, while not completely original, similarly didn’t feel like anything with which I was overly familiar. It held a lot of promise.

When reading anything, you want to feel a connection with the characters. When reading romance especially, you need to feel the chemistry between the two leads. Most every writer is familiar with the phrase “ show, don't tell” when it comes to crafting scenes. It’s important to allow the reader to feel the characters rather than watch them interact. A writer’s goal should be to make the reader forget he or she is reading a book by drawing the reader into the world they create. I was not drawn in. This world felt very inauthentic, and the lack of chemistry between the two leads left me apathetic to whether or not they would reach their HEA.

Beyond that, there are several drastic leaps that left me perplexed. Upon discovering the existence of a supernatural world, Larissa doesn’t blink before accepting it as fact, which made the drama between her and Dante feel even more forced.

I will say Ms. Monroe has a lot of promise as well as room to grow as an author. If “Protector Mine” is any indication of her imagination, I can definitely tell she has a knack for extraordinary stories. It just takes more than a few characters and awkward dialogue to make a novel work. I’m sure there will be an audience for this book, but unfortunately, it was not to be found in this reader.
