Massimiliano Frezzato was an Italian comic book author. Born in Turin, he studied at the liceo artistico in his hometown and began his career in 1985. In 1990 he started the series Margot, written by Jerome Charyn. His most famous work was I custodi del Maser (Keepers of the Maser), which appeared in 1996 and has been translated in numerous countries, including United States, Germany, France, Belgium, Portugal, Poland and Denmark.
I wish the writing was a little more sophisticated. It feels too rodumentary most of the time. Also, too vague, which makes the immersion into the story difficult for me.
That said, it improved in the 2nd half of the book, where I felt the story picking up a better pacing.
The art is absolutely gorgeous. Some of the best fantasy art Europe has to offer.
There is still a lot of mystery surrounding the events in this world so I'm very curious to see where this is going.
There is also a slight touch of European erotism that I personally love.
*I would actually read this first, even before tome one if I were to hypothetically have all series memory erased and needed to reread before approaching tome three, since none of its encyclopedic information spoils more than the meeting of specific characters. I am positive that I would have enjoyed the first hundred pages in a far more satisfying manner, allowing optimal enjoyment and adding enthusiastic eagerness that would surely have me closer to my currently final tome six. I am so glad that I only have the supplement-free fourth tome to read in a Heavy Metal magazine because a peek at those in tomes 5(¹⁶p) and 6(⁸p) ensured that these extras will be mandatory reading for these to achieve their highest *s
Visual: ***** Here is the sort of A¹ artist, when he is well-drafted like this, who most deserves the extra 5mm→↑ of Editions USA!
Narrative: *** It's developing the characters in the story but relies on little in the first tome and the very general single-page exposition of one of them within this, who was probably doing some lying and withholding to the enemy at the time, and the crucial sixteen pages at the finish of this to hold together a shred of certainty about motivations, who anyone is in relation to each other and why things are the way they have become.
Conflict begins to arise, and we learn more about the world they live in. The crew is on their next journey from what they've been looking for all along. Quick read; loved the drawings, especially the tower and all the dwarves hanging from it!
