Collecting issues 13-24 of the Casey/Scioli series, Gødland Celestial Edition Book Two is very much the sagging middle of the saga. The villains' stories are idling in geosynchronous orbit, especially the Tormentor/Nicklehead stuff, but the Triad's too. Neela's journey through the cosmos gets teased a lot. Adam is on the outs with his government handlers, then back in. And there's a 60¢ issue that mostly just recaps the preceding issues, useful at the time, but redundant to the marathoning reader. The series plays for time. But the collection ends with a number of bangs! Several important deaths are in the offing. Neela returns to Earth for a very cool What If issue. And the cosmic-powered fights are percussive as all get out. A difficult start to the second "year" of the book, but it finds its groove again and gives Adam Archer juice to propel us through Book 3. It's also around this time that Scioli decides to evolve his style, using thinner lines and moving away from Kirby in terms of final rendering. There are a couple of issues of growing pains on that front, but I think the eventual result is one I like, even if I still (at this point) miss the outright Kirby pastiche.

If you like Kirby and his Fourth World then you might want to give this a look. It isn't deep, but its fun and every page has that same Kirby kinetic energy that the king mastered so effortlessly. Wild characters, combined, with amazing action fill these pages. Old-school fun, without too much of the pop culture references that used to clutter up comics in the early 2000s. The only problem is that there are several sub-plots that meander from issue to issue with almost no sign in sight that they will be sewn up. Some of these villains have been around for over ten issues without meeting the hero yet. While I enjoyed this volume, it is very much a transitional volume leading up to the explosive conclusion in the next book. This is not the place to start this series.

A lot of things I like about this series and a lot of things I don't like. But overall, the pros outweigh the cons. Most important is that it's just insane. Artistically there is so much crazy detail and color. The designs are nuts. The story is absolutely moronic. Bunch of cosmic stuff that is completely meaningless if you think for it for a second. But if you can look past that and the weird, stiff faces, there is a whole lot of strangeness to enjoy.
