The Pack

Rate this book
Sigmund "Siggy" Farris and his five friends form a group called The Pack as a fun way to make some extra dough under-the-table by offering such services as bookmaking, event planning and organized gambling. The Pack is an unexpected success and eventually turns into a serious business with good money. But the tight-knit group soon find themselves in far more treacherous waters for bigger bucks and more power, forming partnerships with other organized crime groups. Soon their lives spiral into a frenzy of betrayal and murder. Conscience and righteousness are soon abandoned for survival. Layered with dozens of characters, each of whom drive the plot from beyond the concept that crime doesn't pay to the irresistible craving of power and wealth. There are people who live in a hostile lifestyle because they have no choice, and there are also those who choose this path to gain respect and importance they somehow couldn't find in the "honest" world. "THE PACK" examines both kinds of people. The six major characters are unwilling to accept that some things in life are inevitable; and in taking justice into their own hands, their fate turns out to be far grimmer than if they had turned a blind eye.

C. W. Schultz is an American author who was born in Seattle, WA on January 24, 1985. On July 5, 2007, Schultz’s debut novel “YEVAL” was released, a story which came to be through a script Schultz had written for a film. Schultz, being a major animal lover, started 2008 with a short-lived blog about bird care for the fallen Seattle Post-Intelligencer called “BIRDIE BASICS”, but soon resigned due to finding it unnecessarily repetitive, explaining that, “You can’t eternally expand something written in the manner of a textbook. I said what needed to be said for basic information about bird care for beginners. It’s time to move on. The blog is complete. The mission is accomplished.” Throughout much of 2008, Schultz got a gig writing trivia questions for game-show “EASTERN EXPEDITION” before the show was eventually cancelled. In 2010, Schultz released his second novel “THE PACK” and wrote the film “WATCH” which premiered at the Gig Harbor Film Festival in 2012 and was well-received, being listed as the Director’s Choice Awards’ First Runner-Up for Best Short Film. Schultz's third novel "JILL" was released on December 7, 2012; and his fourth novel "A BOOK ABOUT A FILM" on September 8, 2015.

The underlying story in this book was great. I docked one star because the graphic violence was a bit much to stomach at times. After reading the first chapter, I was intrigued, but I didn't know if I could handle it due to the immediate violence. Overall, I liked the book since it was so unpredictable.
