I have always been a fan of good vampire stories. No, I don't mean sparkly vampires that want to go to High School and date humans or any such drivel. I mean COOL vampires, the kind you'd never, ever, ever want to meet. Ever. The Vampire the Masquerade series has all of what makes for a great fantasy setting. Blood War is the first part of a trilogy called the "Masquerade of the Red Death".
In my strange wanderings through life, I have come across a great deal of what could be termed "lore". This lore comes in handy with this setting-so allow me to explain it a bit:
The "World of Darkness" is the setting for this story and it encompasses a rather large swath of supernatural creatures from vampires to werewolves and even mages. But this series focuses on the Vampires. This "world" is pretty much our world but in a different reality-in this reality all the things that go bump in the night are very real.
It starts in Rome with a meeting between a mysterious young man and a Priest of the Society of Leopold (Vampire hunters sanctioned by the Church). Here we get the basics for the set up:
When Caine was cursed by God, his curse was to become a vampire. He eventually created children (through an act called the "Embrace") and these Second Generation vampires created a fabled city called Enoch. Eventually their offspring rebelled and killed some of the 2nd Gens and they became the 3rd Gen. This Third Generation serves as the Founders of the 13 major clans of vampires. Each clan has specific powers native to its bloodline.
Throughout the years as more generations were created, each subsequent generation weaker than the preceding, and these became the clans that exist in "modern times" ("modern" vampires, newly created, are generally of the 13th generation). There are two major factions- The Camarilla and the Sabbat.
The Camarilla takes the view that since there are far more humans (Kine) than Vampires (Kindred), the best way to go about things is to maintain a "Masquerade" and never openly show that they exist. From corporations to politicians to criminal organizations, they are the power brokers behind the scenes. Famous clans of the Camarilla are ones such as the Ventrue (they tend to Embrace aristocrats and the upper crust of society); the Tremere (Vampire mages specializing in Thaumaturgy, Blood magic); the Malkavians (they tend to Embrace insane people); the Brujah (rebels and anarchists) and several others.
Their rivals are the Sabbat which is broken into two clans the Tzimisce and the Lasombra. They view Kine as nothing more than talking cattle and don't really care much about the Masquerade. There is constant conflict between the two sects. On top of their utter disregard for humans, the Sabbat also view the founding vampires of the 3rd Generations (known as Antediluvians) as a huge threat. Those nearly godlike creatures are resting in Torpor but when they awake, human blood will not suffice and they will feed on the younger generations.
While these are the major sects, there are a few others that are worth mentioning that tend to remain "neutral" in this fight- the Giovanni (necromancers and control of the international banking system); the Assamites ( Vampire Assassins that serve the highest bidders) and the Children of Set (based out of Egypt-they worship a 3rd Gen vampire known as Set).
That's the basics for the interpersonal conflicts in this book. It must be pointed out that vampires of the 3rd generation are several thousand years old and their powers are far beyond mortal comprehension. Thankfully they are also sleeping. Thus the 4th generation ( Methuselahs) are the most powerful creatures of the night- nigh on demigods they are viewed as a myth by many of the younger generation vampires. Most major cities in the world are ruled by a Prince (if Camarilla) or Archbishop (Sabbat).
This is a book detailing a grand conspiracy. Dire Mcann is a human detective (or is he?) in the employ of Prince Vargoss (a 5th generation) of St. Louis. One night his domain comes under the attack of an incredibly powerful vampire known as the Red Death. Yet at the same time this Red Death has also attacked Justine Bern, Archbishop of the Sabbat in Mexico City. Who is this creature and how powerful is he (very)? What are his plans?
This is the mystery that draws in not only Mcann but many others across a rather diverse grouping. The best part is realizing that there are many different players at work- the eldest vampires (3rd and 4th gen) are playing a game called the Jyhad for total control of the world and the lesser generations are their playthings. Their powers are so beyond comprehension that even vampires like Vargoss (himself nearly a thousand years old) can not wrap their minds around it and tend to view them as myths. But the Red Death's coming seems to coincide with the rising of some other "myths" called the Nicktuku (monstrous vampires descended from a 3rd gen known as Absmilliard) from the Baba Yaga in Russia to Nuckalevee in Australia.
All of these events point towards the coming of Gehenna, when the 3rd generation will rise to feed. This mystery, and the violent actions that arise, draws in everyone from Mcann to Alicia Varney, a wealthy industrialist (or is she?) in the service of Justine Bern, to the Giovanni to the Mafia (run by a 5th gen known as Don Caravelli)...the cast of characters is large and the events epic.
I truly enjoyed this book and have always respect the setting- these are really cool vampires and their powers are quite interesting. But, just as humans view vampires to be a supernatural construct, it's funny that many of the "current" (this includes the 5th gens) have never even seen nor heard of the 4th generation, who tend to be secretive to the extreme. Also the difference in power between generations is seemingly geometric. A 13th generation is close to what we think of vampires in the modern setting (think "True Blood"), but go back and run into one from the 7th or 10th even and you will find they possess powers (called Disciplines) that truly make them forces to be feared and, for comparison's sake, a vampire from the 4th is essentially a demigod with devastating abilities. Thus the game within the game within the game aspect of this story is excellent. Who is manipulating whom? Who is behind all this? Well I shall certainly hunt down book two and three of this superb series. If you like vampires..then you'll love this. Highly recommended, though it helps to have some background on the setting first.

It has been a long time since I found a story and wanted to read the rest of the series. This is a hard-core vampire lover’s wet dream. Taking place in the 90’s, this tale is packed with suspense, action, intrigues, well-defined characters, excellent historical and current events and a lot of globe-trotting: St. Louis, Washington DC,. Russia, Bulgaria, Italy, Paris and more. This is a Tom Clancy novel on serious steroids.
Unknown to mankind, since the days of Caine, vampires have walked and ruled the world. They control more wealth than The Rockefeller, The Rothschilds, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates combined. They are the world order that at the wave of a hand can send a country’s economy into the tank and never know what happened.
The main characters right now are, Dire McCann-a detective, his body guard, not by choice-Flavia, Vargoss, the Prince of St. Louis, Madelline Giovannia, Phantasmas, Alicia Varney and the Red Death. There are a few others, but at times it’s like reading a J.RR. Martin story- too many to remember.
Without going into great detail and a boring review, Russia has become closed off. No one going in to investigate ever comes back. Washington DC is burning as rival clans fight for power and to top it off, the Red Death is playing all sides for its own gain. Unlike Midas, when he touches you, you don’t turn to gold, you go up in a pyrotechnic of flames! Fascinating!

Sadly, there are more grammatical errors than I’d to count. If I can find them, a competent editor with the published could do the same.
I had a problem with the final scene and its believability.
Despite the flaws I found, I have already started the second one, “Unholy Allies.”
Who will like this? Are you kidding me? Anyone who claims to be a true vampire fan!

BUAH. ¡Qué historia! ¡Qué tensión! Los personajes muy currados, muy fiel a la ambientación de Vampiro, La Mascarada, explica clanes, disciplinas y cosas muy técnicas que aparecen en los juegos de rol, así que sirve tanto de entretenimiento como de inspiración para montar una buena partida de Vampiro. Muy bien narrado. La traducción está muy bien. Nada que objetar.

I absolutely love this Trilogy. First I would love to do an audio of it and second I would love to do a Fan Film of it. The characters are fun, fantastic and even though I have read through the trilogy once already I love coming back to it for a second time.

Vintage 1995 over-the-top vampire chaos. Wall-to-wall vampire chaos. Upside down underwater-in-a-cyclone vampire chaos.
Something like two dozen characters to keep track of? Each vampire has a different supernatural power? Seven different cities as settings, and absolute boatloads of Masquerade lore?
Plus: exploding vampires! Decapitated vampires! Fiery vampires! Scholarly vampires! Vampires disguised as wizards! Vampires who take long naps! Street vigilante vampires!
It is all a bit much.
Especially as there is exactly one vampire who speaks in dialect, and while it's an ostensibly British dialect, it's one I do not believe exists outside of these pages.

Ugh.
Meanwhile, over in a (vampire) Mafia boss' ultra-secure lair in Italy:

Book 1 of the Masquerade of the Red Death trilogy.
This book was lent to me years ago and I finished all three in two days, if that says anything.
These books are set in White Wolf's world of Vampire the Masquerade, which is a terribly interesting place to begin with, and which is probably why I found these so delicious to read. They were a great introduction to the World of Darkness for me, with a nice view of many clans all at once (I think a couple clans didn't make it in here, like the Salburi, but with so many clans, I think Weinberg did a great job with what he did).
Likable characters, compelling storyline. Maybe not the best vampire trilogy ever, but it caught and held my attention. Definitely entertaining if one enjoys VtM.
These books are out of print, so if you are interested in reading and happen to find them, best snatch them up asap.

Not sure how many times I have read this book but every time I have thoroughly enjoyed it. While the book (and its sequels) are based upon a role-playing game you do not have be a participant in it to read and enjoy. The beginning of the book contains enough information to bring you up to speed on what you need to know, and also serves as an interesting introduction to one of the more or less main characters.
Bloodwar can be considered to be either a mystery or a horror novel as it has elements of both. Of course we are left with myriad questions at the end of it but then there are two more books to read so that is not really surprising. All in all a pretty good read and one of my favourites.

Not really sure why I like these books as much as I do. But I think it is becuse it feels like you dip your toes into something much bigger (which you are, as the Vampire rpg has a LOAD of books on background). And I also really like the vampire history in this world and its "realism". If you have the possibility to live forever and is a greedy son of a bitch, you plan very far ahead. You do not spend your time like some vampires I can talk to you about... Its a shame that Weinberg basically copy/paste this plot on his books in the Mage universe. But that is no fault on these books.

This is not really a novel, but a role-playing game narrative--and not a great one at that. There's a funny undercurrent of social criticism, however, for which the points.

Hace muchos años jugué en ordenador el juego de "Vampire: The masquerade redemption" y me gustaron mucho las aventuras de Christof Romuald y Anezka, con ese juego conocí todo el mundillo del Vampire, investigué la historia y me encontré un universo inmenso de información, mitología y leyendas, no en vano es uno de los juegos de rol más populares (con el permiso del todopoderoso Dungeons & Dragons) y existe infinidad de material, el caso es que hace tiempo me econtré esta trilogía y la puse en pedientes pero hasta ahora no me habia puesto a leerla, no me ha defraudado para nada este primer libro, nos situa en esta tradición vampírica de manera general contando los origenes en un acertado prólogo y metiendo algunas partes de historia durante el desarrollo de manera que el lector que no conozca nada sobre la raza de Caín no se sienta perdido, pero a su vez los que lo conozcan de sobra no se aburran, aparte de eso la historia con la Muerte Roja, el Mesias Oscuro y la Reina de la Noche es puro thriller sobrenatural con un final que hace que tengas que empezar el segundo libro nada mas terminar el primero.

Interesante primera entrega de esta trilogía de vampiros maquiavelicos basada en el popular juego de rol. El equilibrio mundial que existe entre los distintos clanes de chupasangres se ve alterado tras la aparición de una extraña figura con poderes sobrenaturales. Es aquí cuando nuestros protagonistas: un detective y una mujer adinerada se ven envueltos en un misterio que puede tener consecuencias devastadoras.
Creo que si bien el libro nos introduce en un mundo con un lore extenso que enriquece la lectura también es algo que le juega un poco en contra ya que a veces uno se pierde entre las distintas jerarquías y terminología. Recomendado si buscas una historia de vampiros parecidos a los vistos en cintas como Blade o Underworld. Seguramente siga con la siguiente libro !

First read this about 20 or so years ago and thought it was awesome. Just finished a re-read, and while I still liked it, I don't think it's so great. It reads like a comic book. The pool of female characters get cringey after more than two of them are described as being sexy and/or beautiful beyond belief. Dire McCann is a Mary Sue (whatever the male is called).
I liked the politics of the Kindred society and the lore.

I see a fair number of people ripping on this trilogy but listen up. It's RPG fiction. Is it high tier literature? Of course not. Is it fun? Yes. This one sets the primary players for the series. It introduces, most importantly, a mysterious entity called the Red Death that may be of an unknown vampire lineage. For this kind of book, that's plenty. Pacing is fast and enjoyable.

Great books, I have read these books numerous times since 2006 I first knew about them. When I started couldn't study or work until finished all 3 books. My mother was the same, she pretended to be working in her job, instead se keep reading until the end. Never understood why these books are so low rated. Bad publicity?

This might serve as a decent introduction to the World of Darkness franchise for newcomers. However, the characters felt contrived, weighed down by dull exposition. The central mystery failed to hold my interest, and I ended up stopping halfway through.

Vítejte ve Světě temnoty (můžete znát z her Vampire: The Masquerade a Bloodlines), v němž chod měst i celých zemí řídí ze stínů staletí, někdy i tisíciletí staří upíři. Milovníci subžánrů Emo a Goth si sice přijdou na své, ale kriminalita je rekordně vysoká a smrt číhá na každém rohu.
Upíři s neuvěřitelnou fyzickou i psychickou silou jsou rozděleny do různých klanů a jejich největší zálibou je obvykle pletichaření a vymýšlení bezohledných plánů na získání větší moci. Do toho razantně vstupuje ohnivý upír Red Death, který plánuje rozpoutat velkou upírskou válku.
V prvním díle trilogie Blood War se seznámíme se spoustou postav. Každá z nich má něco do sebe, a proto zamrzí, že s některými se setkáme jen třeba ve dvou kapitolách. Budu si holt muset přečíst další díl. Což bych udělal i tak, protože Bloodwar je velmi fajn čtení.

Upíři s neuvěřitelnou fyzickou i psychickou silou jsou rozděleny do různých klanů a jejich největší zálibou je obvykle pletichaření a vymýšlení bezohledných plánů na získání větší moci. Do toho razantně vstupuje ohnivý upír Red Death, který plánuje rozpoutat velkou upírskou válku.
V prvním díle trilogie Blood War se seznámíme se spoustou postav. Každá z nich má něco do sebe, a proto zamrzí, že s některými se setkáme jen třeba ve dvou kapitolách. I've never tried to read a book set in a pre-existing role playing world before, so I apologise to this author if there is a quota of game stuff he had to include and this is normal, but my main problem with this book was the barely disguised info dumps. The book started with one character telling another the introduction to Vampire: The Masquerade. I guess if you'd never role played the game this would be necessary, but it nearly stopped me reading further, it was BORING.
To be fair, the book improved after that, but there were still moments where the plot and characterisation stopped while the author explained something about the World of Darkness, or what a Clan was. The balance is obviously tricky and overall the book scraped 3 stars because I liked the characters and it was quite fun, plus it reminded me of role playing, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

A good book. I like the story and the history given. I am positively prejudiced in its favor though since it is based on Vampire: The Masquerade.
What is bad is that there are numerous grammatical errors and other typos. Also, sometimes characters can be insanely stupid. Also, I can't really relate to any of the primary characters; I can't bring myself to care about them.

The whole trilogy spit in the face the Game System, and still gives inside some of the historical backround. Weinberg creates uber-characters in any possible ways. They run faster, jump higher, and have more feelings than a brasilian soap oprah. If you are interested in the story, it's a good choise, if you want believable characters, go and read something else.

Best way to enter the Vampire: the Masquerade world before even playing the game. Heart-throbbing action, a handful of well framed characters and so very catchy writing.
