Roxie's Protectors #3

Leif's Surrender

Rate this book
Jaden notices the sexy hunk in her cashier’s line. But she knows, with her plain looks and glasses, he'd never notice her. So when he returns to the grocery store the next day and kisses her senseless in front of everyone, she can only hope she'll see him again.

Leif swears he will never be permanently mated, but when he feels his mate at a grocery store while buying pregnant Roxie ice cream, his world turns upside down. Drawn to his would-be mate, he finds fighting his mating urge is harder than he expects. If he can only hold out long enough to let nature run its course, he can get on with his life. But resisting her is impossible, and he needs to claim her as his.

ONE & A HALF STARS--Let's just say I will not be reading from this author or series again.

I'll admit, I wanted to read this because HELLO! hot ginge on the cover. I have a special place in my soul for them. And I never see them enough in romance. But the cover is the only hotness there is.

I know, I know...don't judge a book on its cover and all that BS. But this is proof that the inside can not match the hot cover.

Inside is a pathetic tale of a plain cashier who falls over herself and lets the hot ginger shifter walk all over her. There's plenty of examples of why both of these fucktards are pieces of shit - a strange guy kissing on the heroine and since she feels she's plain, instead of kneeing this stranger in the balls, she accepts it or maybe said stranger knowing he has to mate with his mate or spend an eternity of suffering tries to suffer because he wants to screw other hotter women (but he can't due to the mating urge) or you know what I'm just quitting while I'm ahead.

I swear if this book was a person, I'd knee them in the genitals.

There are few books where after you finish reading them, you feel like sighing and there are some which leave you crying and then..there are some which just don't work at all....

Quick Review -

Leif has been going on in his life of no commitment and is happy that he is not mated to any one. He dooesn't want to be mated.

Leif's Reason -Thinks it will get boring to live with the same girl.

That totally put me off.

Jaden - I think Bella(twilight) had more sense than this one.

Proof-
1, Enjoys getting kissed by total stranger when she is at work and then proceeds to sleep with said stranger after learning his name.
2, Keeps talking about her looks and describing how everyone looks compared to her.
3, Some crap about being independent and then agreeing to everything Leif says.

I am a big fan of the plain jane theme, but this was disappointing. Usually the leads are atleast smart enough if they are not gorgeous. Here there was no beauty neither was there a brain. I was not able to connect with anyone in the book.

After reading 'Roan's Fall' and 'Jager's Mate', I thought I would just skip this one and also 'Skylar's Devotion', as I thought they would just be more of the same. WRONG!

A very few pages into 'Kye's Heart' I realized that there was a lot of back-story that I had missed and I needed to go back and read those two. To get the full effect of this whole continuing saga, I think that it's important to start at Book 1 of the 'Wulf's Den' series, 'Roxie and Beowulf' ('Roxie's Protectors' is simply a continuation of that series).

I know it seems silly to say I skipped this one and also 'Skylar's Devotion' partly because of the rather bad covers, and also the descriptions didn't do the whole story justice. In the actual book, Leif is a very good-looking shifter... with auburn hair longer than that of the guy on the cover. Also, it's not simply a story about a shifter finding his mate, but has the next steps in the saga which can't be totally covered with a few paragraphs of 'catch up' explanation.

Jaden, the h of this installment, is one of my favorites of this series. She is quiet, not especially pretty, and alone in the world. But, she's emotionally strong and willing to do her part to help, and I liked her very much.

Leif is a shifter that is perfectly happy being single, and doesn't want to give up all the flocks of gorgeous females at his disposal to be tied down to a mate. It's pretty comical how much he fights it, and receives plenty of taunts for the way he hassled the other guys who had found mates.

The 'main story' takes another important turn in this book, and I am anxious to see what happens next. There is more to Jaden than anyone expected, and her existence could well affect the story from here on out.

Next up is 'Skylar's Devotion' which I will read even though the guy on the cover looks like a not-green version of the Hulk.

Okay, so I'm about half-way through this book and I can already tell (actually I could already tell a few pages in but decided to give it another shot) that there's something seriously seriously lacking in this book.

I started reading it because I love the shy girl/hot guy storyline (it suits my current mood at least) but COME ON, SERIOUSLY?

I can forgive the first kiss but NO woman should let a man she doesn't know drive her home the 3rd time she's ever seen him (and consequently, finally learns his name) and then proceeds to have sex with the guy on the same friggin night!

Honestly, everything seemed forced. Leif doesn't really like or know Jaden and the only thing that attracts him to her is the mating bond. Jaden is attracted to him and thats about all there is to her.

I mean, really now, their attraction has to be better written than that. Unbelievable hotness and smexy sex (you know the kind, the ones that make you blush and look over your shoulder to make sure no one can read what you're reading) would make this whole situation better to the point where a (dangerous) one night stand with a stranger can almost be forgiven IF it was written out well.

But the core of it is, the writing itself falls short. I didn't feel enough of anything. Their chemistry, the sex, the plot, the characters. Blah and more blah.

Which is too bad.

This book reminds me of a fanfiction. Lots of sex. Not much else. The skeleton is there. It just needs to be built on. A lot more.

I know Jaden and Leif are mates, but she doesn't know that, so how can she meet some guy know him no more than 2 days and be ready to quit her job and move in with him come on that sounds very very unlikely.
Everything happened very fast in this book and it was hard to believe it all, the reactions of the characters didn't seem very natural.
And out of the blue she found who her father was and ooo he a werewolf and he wants to kill her mate oo yes.
I didn't liked this book - not the characters not the storyline not the way it was written not anything.

There was nothing technically awful about this book, except that very little happened and neither main character had aby real personality.

There is something kind of humorous about a werewolf reluctantly accepting his mate. More often than not the lengths they go to avoid such a fate is part of why it's so funny I guess. In Leif's Surrender, which is part of her larger 'Roxie's Protectors' series (which in turn seems an off-shoot of her 'Wulf's Den' series), Leif does everything but shackle himself to the kitchen sink to keep away from Jaden. Unfortunately his family, who are all tired of hearing him gripe at them for getting cuddly with their mates, forces the issue.

And hotness ensues.

Considering I haven't read any of the other books tied to this one, Chenery does a really good job laying out the land and giving me the details of what's important to know from past stories. Some of it, such as in-jokes between the mated pairs, was lost on me, but by in large I had a goo grasp of the situation at hand.

I liked that Jaden wasn't a secret special person just waiting to be unleashed. She was pretty normal, average in almost everything except her tolerance of Leif's weird attitude. She was kind of bland though, more of a reactive damsel instead of a proactive heroine. She let Leif call the shots, making only the slightest of protests, and caving in pretty quickly besides. Near the end she picks up some steam, but again its a reaction to something that happens to Leif and feels kind of sudden given the conversation she just had with Leif a few pages prior.

Leif was the opposite--from the first page he dominated the story. His reactions, his feelings, his thoughts--they were all clear and open. Pretty confused and jumbled, but clear enough. It really was never a matter of when (it was definitely going to be sooner rather than later), but more of how. How he would snap and finally give in. The fact that just because he lusted after Jaden didn't mean he automatically alleviated from her from 'cute' to 'drop dead gorgeous' was also a point in his favor. It may sound weird, but it irks me when a hero suddenly thinks a hereto 'average, but cute' heroine suddenly becomes the hottest woman on the planet. You can find someone the most attractive, alluring person you have met--but that doesn't mean she (or he) is seen the same way by everyone else.

The climax was a bit of a letdown, but I am highly interested to see how the little fib the group told plays out in future stories.

Leif's book was way better than I expected!

As we know, Leif is a strong, sexy and really high (195 cm?!) werewolf with no plan to settle down. But when he suddenly finds his mate, he starts to panic. The mate urge is really high, and for the first time he finds it really hard to keep his distance from a woman who tends to be his soon-to-be-mate.

Jaden was alone for a while now, with her mother dead and no living relatives, she spent her tennage years in the care of foster parents. Now she became a strong (but a bit shy) and adroit woman who lives alone and works in a grocery shop as a cashier.

Leif's struggle was adorable and very hot at the same time. He doesn't want to claim a mate, but the urge to keep Jaden all to himself kicks his ugly head and after the first taste of her, he's lost, forever. Although I found it hot that he's so horny all the time, I think he's stupid for not claiming Jaden for the first time and give it to his pleasure. When he finally gave in, it was so intensive that I felt my panties dripping (so embarassing, but it's true). Oh God, it was waaay hot.

Again, that growl thing appeared, and I loved it way more than in the other books. I should see a teraphyst I think...

Absolutely and more, the funnniest scene ever was when Jagger gave back what he got when he found his mate. As he said> Payback is a bitch. So true! But it won't make it less funny.

“Can I do something for you, Jager?” Leif asked.
“What is it you always tell Daylen and me when you catch us making out? Oh, yes, I remember now. Why don’t you go get a room?”

I loved when Jager teased him to the very end like Leif did with him. it was soo much fun!

The shock of the year... I give it to this book. When I found out who is Jaden's father, I had my mouth dropped for almost 5 minutes... OH-MY-GOD! Impossible. But it's true. I won't tell who is it because it will be a very huge spoiler. You have to read the book to find out.

I got the transformation thing that I missed from the first and the second book. It was good, I think, but a bit weird. But how can a werewolf transformation not be weird?

Even so, it was a really good read, so I give 5/5 stars to this book.

What Is It About:
Leif is a werewolf and the protector of the foretold one, Roxie. Roxie is currently pregnant and sends Leif to get her some ice-cream. At the store, he discovers the his mate is the plain-jane checkout cashier. He leaves when he discovers her and tries to fight the mating urge because he never wanted to have a mate. But he cannot resist her. Jayden notices Leif the instant that he joins her line but she knows that he'll never notice her because of how plain she is. But when he comes back and they have a moment at her till, she knows that there's something going on between them.

What I Liked and Didn't:
Yup, really not liking this series and it's proving every reason that I don't like short stories. Short stories are so short that just when you get into the characters, the book is over and the plot is shortened and sped over just to keep in to the right length. I literally have no words for this book. Normally I love a good plain-Jane story where the hero thinks that she is beautiful but she doesn't see it. But no, Leif himself thinks that she's too plain to be his mate. Ouch. In this and the Wulf's Den series, I get annoyed at the whole couple withdrawl and how the girl is always made to quit her job so that they can stay together but in this book, not too much of an issue because she works a til and lives in a crappy basement. So I suppose that's one positive.

Final Thoughts:
I don't regret reading it and I didn't struggle to finish it so it wasn't that bad. I just didn't enjoy reading it. So I'm going to say that it's a low two star rating, more of a 1.5 or 1.25 star rating.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely not, none of the series.
Will I be carrying on? Yes, I'd read them originally about four years ago and gave them a decent score and I really don't want to leave them at that considering that I'm really not liking the series.

After years of being a playboy Leif finds his mate on an ice cream run for Roxie. No matter how hard he tries to fight the mating urge, he constantly finds himself going back to her. Yet when he finally gives in to it, Leif ends up having an emergency and must find a way to tell Jaden about being a werewolf and all else. Things quickly spiral out of control and Jaden must take the risk of her life.

Leif’s Surrender is another great installment to this series. I really enjoyed Jaden. She is a great woman who stands on her own and fights for the people she loves. Leif is also a great man. He only fights the mating urge because of his past and his fears. Once he sees how much he cares for Jaden he stops fighting and revels in their love. Leif and Jaden are a wonderful couple that quickly fall in love and must fight for that love.

Once again Marisa Chenery has written a great story and now has the readers seeing a whole other side of Miles. I cannot wait to see where this series goes from here.

Monica's Review

Leif's Surrender by Marisa Chenery is a sweet romance book that will leave you speechless. Destiny is destiny and Leif does not want to understand that when your mating is called there is no denying it. He wants to be a bachelor for maybe a bit longer, but after meeting Jaden there is no holding back. No matter how much Leif would like to fight his feelings he can only hurt himself.

Jaden is just a simple woman that really has not had too many boyfriends and cannot believe that a gorgeous man would even look at her—but she has another thing coming. Jaden has a lot to learn about her and what kind of life will hopefully come if she can overcome an obstacle or two. Jaden will come to face her own past but will that stand in her way of forming a life with Leif or will Leif make a terrible action that will course him to risk everything?

Read this short story on Leif’s life and how the decisions he makes will affect what he can become with someone whom he can love and be with for as long as they live.

Leif goes on a run to get more ice cream for a very pregnant Roxie and meets his mate. Jaden has been on her own since her parents died at age 16 and now barely gets by on her cashier salary. So when hunkie Leif comes through her line she can’t believe he’d be interested in her. After all, she’s not a great beauty or anything, just plain ordinary and nearsighted.

I like this couple. Leif maybe was little impatient and pushed things a little fast, but he still tried to treat her right and give her time. Though I wasn't too thrilled when how he dropped the info on her, but I understand and love the way she responded and volunteered to help. So far all the new mates fit perfectly into the team, but them that way they make good mates.

And we get a nice little surprise at the end which really stirs up the series story line.

Quick Thoughts: 1)I feel sorry for his poor steering wheel.

Fave Scenes: brotherly intervention, grocery store stalking,

Werewolf and protector, Leif swore he would never mate. With his fellow warriors finding themselves with their mates he has been running from any available woman not wanting to be cursed with the same affliction. When he is sent to the store for ice cream, he protests but goes in order to keep his boss happy.

Imagine his shock when he sees clerk Jaden whose mousy brown hairs and glasses cover up what will turn out to be his mate. Leif can't seem to help himself when it comes to her, but he still plans to fight the mating tooth and nail, but a sample of what might have been is to tempting to resist.

I liked this one a lot, until the quickly wrapped up ending. Felt like it was a bit too simplistic of an ending.

Leif's Surrender by Marisa Chenery was the best story, so far, in the Protectors Series. In this tale, Jaden - Leif's mate, is a plain Jane who works in a grocery store. Despite her looks, Leif falls for her and from their the story becomes interesting. Isn't it every girl's (woman's) fantasy to be swept off her feet by a sexy alpha male? Chenery delivers a surprising ending that will keep her fans panting for the next installment of this series.

About Leif & Jaden. Good humor, not much action. Don't like the changes in Roxie.
