I've heard of some of these stories but I haven't read them all before. Hans really was a dark author because I was surprised by the content. I do like reading the original tale of Little Mermaid and I feel like I know Rumpelstiltskin by heart. The last one was definitely darker than I expected. I wonder how kids react to these original tales when Disney has done them to death and made them so light and cheery!
The Little Mermaid is a story much similar to the Disney classic we all know and love. I did find it interesting how this original version of The Little Mermaid, did not have a happy ending. The prince does end up marrying someone else, not a sea witch, but the little mermaid does end up with an immortal soul (a human). This story could be used to teach perseverance. The little mermaid goes to great lengths to achieve her goal, and had she not, sho would have lived an unhappy life.
I love the pictures in the book, and I like the dark and a little bit more scary. Then, the fairytale that I knew. I loved all the stories in it. Everyone different story was amazing 👏.
I read this to my 5-yr-old. Fun stories, except the last one was a little gruesome. It's interesting how the original Little Mermaid did not have a happy ending - not exactly. The prince does end up marrying someone else (at least it wasn't the sea witch), but the little mermaid does end up with an immortal soul (supposedly, only humans have an immortal soul).
The Little Mermaid is such a classic, and this book does it justice. However, the ending in this story is different than the ending that most people/children know and love. Some of the other tails in here could probably be a bit frightening and gruesome to a young child. I would still use this in a classroom because it can be a book that a child would decide to read on his or her own.
I really felt sad when I found out at the end that the Mermaid became sponge. I watched the Disney version first before I read this book. I think that was the reason I felt so sad.
