Tim Burton (USA, b. 1958) is the youngest of Hollywood’s most successful directors. He has the knack of making films with a very broad appeal, taking the silliness out of the representation of children, while remaining in touch with the child within himself and his audiences. Burton emerged as a director and storyteller after working as an animator for Disney. His meeting with Johnny Depp enabled him to give physical form to the heroes of his imaginary worlds, where fear is mixed with laughter, strange is normal and those who are not normal, such as Edward Scissorhands (1990), must be preserved. After Beetlejuice (1988) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), the resolutely boyish Burton, now in his fifties, presents his version of Alice in Wonderland (2010).
I am such a huge fan of all of Tim Burton's movies, so of course I was attracted to this book. A very concise look at Burton's films and what the artistic inspiration was for each one. I appreciated the fact it showed the more recent movies Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland. However if you want a deeper look in his life and films, I recommend the book Burton on Burton.
An interesting take on Burton's origins upto 2010. My attention was most engaged by the commentary on his works in the early 2000s as the author was not afraid of suggesting these works did not reflect Burton's best work, despite their financial success or positive critical reception. This was refreshing as I had suspected a guide like this might tend towards a puff-piece. While the overall tone was expectedly and fairly praiseworthy, it is also well-balanced in its approach.
This guide to Burton provides a good introduction to Burton's oeuvre but its brevity means is not the sort of text that closely analyses individual films.

Only 4/5 because I have the feeling that the author didn’t fully understand Burton. Many times he questions the ‘coincidences’ and exaggerations from his films, which are so characteristic for him. Nothing in Burton’s movies is random, everything is planned and has its’s well defined purpose.
I'm a movie fan so of course I was going to like it, but the writing could have been a little bit better. I don't know if the writer was trying too hard or not hard enough.
An interesting in depth look into the work of Tim Burton. I'm a fan of Burton's film and it's interesting to see where he got his inspiration from and where he started to where he is now.
I read this for my dissertation, on and off, at least. I just finished it and I have to say it was great and summarising his works and giving a few facts here and there, valid for my project. It also gives cited books that I've also picked up and read.
