The Visions of the Children: The Apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje

Rate this book
The classic account of the appearances of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje--now updated for the millenium

Like Lourdes and Fatima before it, Medjugorje has become a holy site for worshippers around the world, a place that will be remembered long after the twentieth century recedes into history.

In this edition, Janice Connell presents a new intruduction that places Medjugorje in the context of the millennium and suggests that the Blessed Mother's final appearance on Earth may indeed be at this small mountain village. The author tells what has happened to the six apparitioners since the book was first published, and the Blessed Mother's monthly messages have been updated through 1997. There is also a new list of Marian Centers across the nation.

The Visions of the Children features exclusive conversations with the six apparitioners who have been receiving, for more than fifteen years, visions and messages of the Virgin Mary, including extraordinary secrets about the final chapter in the history of the world. This book not only tells of the need for love and spiritual awakening, but casts a powerful perspective on the wholescale devastation in Bosnia during the last few years.

Hello again, everyone!

Well, it's been a couple of months since I did my first review and I'm ready to do another. This time I'm actually holding true to the name of this blog and reviewing a book. :)

Today I'm reviewing what I think is one of the best Medjugorje resources available, especially for those new to learning about the reported apparitions of Our Lady in Medjugorje: The Visions of the Children, by Janice T. Connell.

Good resource for:

I will put my credibility on the line and say this book is for anyone searching for the secret of life.

Yes, I said it (or stated it, actually). The messages Our Lady has reportedly been giving us through the Medjugorje visionaries are, in themselves, a manual on how to live a holy life. But this book, in its unique format, does such an amazing job of taking those messages and asking (and answering) the questions you and I may have about what they mean for us and how we're supposed to live the messages out.

Summary:

The Visions of the Children consists mainly of excerpts of in-depth interviews of the visionaries and two locutionists (those who hear Our Lady's voice but do not see her), conducted over the course of several years by Janice T. Connell. Connell is an attorney who came to hear about the apparitions through a newspaper headline and felt compelled to learn more, follow her own faith journey, and eventually publish this book. Connell spends other parts of the book summarizing the story of how these apparitions started and her experiences with the visionaries and locutionists, giving an intimate look into the character of these people reportedly chosen to carry messages from Heaven.

Connell asks straightforward questions, covering every topic from why Our Lady is appearing now to the realities of Satan's influence to what secrets the visionaries hold about the future of the world. You name it and Connell has asked it in this book.

One new thing I learned:

The visionaries state Our Lady has told them guardian angels are real. They essentially look like babies with wings and take great joy in leading us down the right path. They apparently want us to know their names and will make them known in some way if we ask. They also apparently like it when we give them tasks to perform for us!

Why this is a good resource:

See my comments toward the beginning of this blog post. Just a phenomenal way to learn so much about these apparitions.

Final thoughts:

I often read books and then sell them, but this is one I'm keeping in my library because it is such a wealth of information and a good reference to remember what is expected of us by God.

This book starts with multiple ways of explaining that the author is all about the Magisterium, including Pope JPII's quote on going to Medjugorje. There's a section devoted to each visionary. And there are photos of all the visionaries. If you want a detailed account of each visionary, their marital status and DOBs of kids, this book is for you. I know that lots of Catholics are diehard fans of this Apparition site, and a lot of conversions and vocations were realized as a result, but I'm going to wait patiently for the Holy See to make an official statement of approval. And that includes reading and endorsing books about it too.

The Visions of the Children: The Apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje (Third Edition, 2007) documents "All the Messages of the Blessed Mother and the Latest Unfolding of God's Plan for the Human Race from Medjugorje" (in Boznia-Herzegovina, formerly a part of Yugoslavia) with six apparitioners who have been receiving visions of and messages from the Blessed Virgin Mary. The book relates the Blessed Mother's messages to the six visionaries from their beginning in June 1981 through June 2006.

Why is Mary, the mother of God, communicating to us in this manner? In her message on May 25, 1987, the Blessed Mother presented the following message to the world through the visionaries at Medjugorje:

"Dear children, I invite everyone to start living in God's love. I am your eternal mother and therefore I want to lead you all to perfect holiness. I want every one of you to be happy here on earth, and every one of you to be with me in heaven. This is, dear children, the reason for my coming here and my desire. Thank you for your response to my call."

While the visions at Medjugorje have not been officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church for "technical" reasons, many thousands of pilgrims make the journey to the mountains in Boznia-Herzegovina each year to pray. Regarding Medjugorje, Pope St. John Paul II said "Medjugorje, Medjugorje. It's the spiritual heart of the world." Later he remarked: "Approve all that is related to Medjugorje." And finally: "Authorize everything that regards Medjugorje."

This book is certainly an important read for anyone interested in the Blessed Virgin Mary, Marian apparitions, or Mejugorgje.

Although I found the book interesting and thought provoking, I also found it somewhat frightening rather then hopeful. I could never possibly achieve even partly what the visionaries have and yet they still consider themselves sinners and in need of confession often. I almost feel that I'm beyond redemption by those standards. The book was a little hard to read as well because of the redundancy of both the interviews and the messages. I don't know that there would be another way to present this information but I found I needed to take frequent breaks from reading so that I could absorb what I was reading otherwise I went on autopilot because of the repetitiveness.

This book while informative can get boring, especially with the q & a sessions the writer has with the visionaries. This book doesn't shed a whole lot of new light on the apparition of the Blessed Virgin or the lives of the visionaries. The updated version does provide messages by the Blessed Virgin up until 2006.

I read this ages ago.

Note that this Apparition has not yet been approved by the Catholic Church and, as a matter of fact some Church officials are thinking it will never be approved based on the recent behavior of the now adult "seers"

A clear, fairly concise compendium of the Apparitions of Medjugorje. Presents the case for the apparitions and the messages with limited bias and personal opinion, which allows the reader to better decide for themselves their belief in said apparitions of Our Lady.

This is a book by a believer. It is a very good book and explains the happenings on the mountain over the years. I would have like to read something by some one more disinterested in the apocalyptical material and catholism in general but I suspect it is mostly true believers who write about such matters. I did learn I am probably going straight to hell.
