Lady Luck may have smiled upon fresh-faced college student Taiga Mutou in the form of his cute coworker Yuiko agreeing to go out with him. But little did he know that this particular lady was rotten through and through! Now, instead of the carefree relationship he aspired to, Taiga finds himself penning boy's-love novels and getting dragged to creepy events! To make things worse, he still hasn't been able to entirely give up on that ideal relationship. So when the couple's first Christmas rolls around, Taiga decides to tutor a schoolboy for some extra cash. Only Yuiko's fujoshi filter seems to have rubbed off on Taiga more than he ever anticipated, and now he's seeing his new part-time gig in a whole new light?! Can Taiga hang on to the job, or will his Christmas plans be thwarted by his own fully ripe and rotten tendencies - not to mention Mr. Perfect, Kashiwabari, who still wants Yuiko for himself?!
Really short, shorter than it seems. There's an entire chapter that is actually the manga the Yuiko is so obsessed with. About a sports game (it actually reminds me of Hikaru no Go. Or Yu-gi-oh.), it's about a boy who likes this sport and somehow ended up with a spirit that has to do with it. A mascot? That takes over his body periodically to play for him. Meh. I really hope it was a joke, and rushed or something. "My Girlfriend's a Geek' is about 10X better than the sports manga attempt.
It was a cute episode, especially the interactions between Yuiko and Taiga. It's a winter-break filler volume, though, so... Cute interactions, and both of them spending their first Christmas together (Christmas in Japan being more a girlfriend/boyfriend event than a family one). Also covers this comic convention Yuiko goes to (though we don't see lots of that), and Taiga hanging out with his friends.
Taiga also picks up a job through Kouji tutoring an middle-school student. There's some misunderstanding when he decides to keep it a secret from Yuiko because of how she usually reacts to things (making up scenarios that freak him out). They don't talk much, so he gets worried that she may be angry with him. Then Milan becomes involved again...
Cute, but not up to snuff (except for the picture of Kouji (Pg. 19? panel 2). That's completely adorable. But definitely feels more like a filler volume.
Wastes a lot of space on a boring sports manga. The point of this series is to see how a normal guy deals with a fujoshi-a boy on boy loving girl otaku. That's the main draw for us who aren't really into the whole fujoshi thing, seeing a different form of otaku in practice.
To be honest, the conceit is starting to get old, as it really seems to be written from the point of a fujoshi rather than that of the boyfriend. Reading these later volumes I couldn't help but think if the genders were reversed, the story would be 100% different, ala Welcome to the NHK or Genshiken. Imagine if your boyfriend constantly read girls love manga, called you "maid-kun," constantly thought about you and your best girlfriend in inappropriate ways to the point where you felt you didn't want to tell him about your teaching a cute junior high student on the side.
The difference too is that Yuiko manages to be borderline obsessive while still being attractive, functional in society, and gets a pass for it because she's a cute older woman. Sort of fujoshi wish fulfillment here. While it's still good, with decent characters, the wasted space with the sports manga knocks it down a star.
Once again. I like the art and idea enough but the dialog and story aren't 100% there for me. I will finish the series since it's so short, but I still don't know what this is all leading to. This volume in particular had a large section of it dedicated to a story (within the story) and I honestly don't care for it that much. Either way, gotta pick up the next volume to see how this goes.
The good news: The banter between Yuiko and Taiga seems to be more playful joking now... it's like when you reach that stage in your life with your friends where you can pick on each other and give each other a hard time and you know not to take it too seriously. That's what it feels like to me now. So it's a bit endearing. The other good news: Yuiko is absent through most of this volume. Thank god. I mean, I have obsessive tendencies too to the point if I'm really into something, it's all I focus on... but I CAN have a conversation about something else without immediately bringing it back to the subject I'm obsessing over. I'm trying to give her more slack because of my obsessive ways so I feel like maybe I should understand her, but I just can't. She drives me crazy. Get a life sister! Lol, okay, moving on.
The bad news: This volume was really, REALLY boring. It's very strange to me because I've never experienced this with a manga before. Halfway through this volume I was like "Do I really have to finish this?" And almost put it down.
I've read a lot of mangas before and I cannot recall a time I was bored reading a volume. Enraged yes (*cough* Death Note *cough*) but never so bored I actually considered putting the volume down.
I have one volume left from the library and I probably will read it. There are 5 volumes in this series total. The library doesn't have the 5th one and at this point, I don't even know if I'll bother looking it up online to finish this series. Ugh.
Another fun but average volume, this one a bit shorter than the others because the last 20 pages or so was given over to an actual manga rendition of Sepak Takuro, the sports shounen manga that Yuiko is obsessed with. It's done by a guest mangaka and is, to be blunt, UTTERLY BORING. And this coming from a fan of sports shounen manga too. =__= A waste of space and time, overall (and not even a very nice art style to provide eye candy).
As for our main story, not much happens--a new character is introduced (Kouji's cute little high school sister, who is a cosplay nut and Yuiko's new "girlfriend"), and much babble about Winter Comiket and our lead couple's first Christmas together (it involves cosplay). Overall, fun, and as always, you learn about some interesting fujoshi subculture. But I would have preferred to see a bit more Kouji--Yuiko's slashing of her own boyfriend with other guys is seriously the funniest thing about this series. Not so much of that in this one. Overall, so-so.
Not much Yuiko and Taiga in this one but I enjoyed the bonus chapter of Seppaku Takuro immensely. Considering my fondness for Prince of Tennis, it's exactly the sort of manga I would enjoy.
So far, series has its moments. But its just okay. I don't know, the story sounded interesting and the covers are kind of cute. The art style is also good. Other than that, okay volume.
