Madeline Mann is a small town reporter whom nobody takes seriously until her old high school friend disappears; when Maddy begins her search for Logan Lanford, everyone takes notice.

This might be because just about everyone is a suspect in Logan's disappearance, from his neglected wife to the shady mayor to Logan's jealous brother. Even Madeline's boyfriend seems to harbor some resentment toward the AWOL Logan and his reputation as a philanderer.

In searching for her old friend, Madeline is also searching for vindication of her career choice and a chance to be independent from a family that threatens to drive her crazy.

I am not at all interested in reading stories with lengthy scenes featuring children and/or a frazzled mommy. I have no idea if that was only in the early part of the book, but after I read about 20% of it, I anticipated a continuing of the same and lost my desire to read it. As I've stated in other reviews where I have not enjoyed the story, I'm very aware this is due to subjective tastes in reading material and in no way mean it as a slam on the author's skill. I do think that I will need to read the Look Inside previews of any book I contemplate purchasing though, because there have been a handful of disappointments where the content of the book doesn't reflect what the book summary or the teaser blurb proffered as a storyline.

It took me a while to warm up to Madeline. The first few chapters were hard, and the first time I read them I gave up. But then I ran out of Julia Buckley books to read, having recently re-read the Undercover Dish books, the Hungarian tea shop books, and the Writer's Apprentice books. So I tried again and grew to like her by about halfway through the book.

I haven't checked the pub dates, but I think these must be an earlier series - the writing feels less nuanced, but it was still a good story, with good clues and red herrings too.

Great female characters

Julia has a way with writing great female characters. Madeline is strong, feisty and just nosey enough to get in to enough trouble to make things interesting. Can't wait to read the next in this series.

This was a delightfullynlight read! It is an easy who dunnit who remains logical!
The one aspect of the book that i think needs a special mention is that the author made her female character strong,
Likeable and totally unique with out making her unlikable! Or even at times pathetic as so many authors tend to do!
Bravo!

I really enjoyed Madeline's character. This is a fast-paced who-done-it. A perfect cozy. I would definitely recommend it.
