Two men in rural 1960s Nebraska spend a winter weekend at a local college, where a lonesome artist from a Panhandle ranch and a boy with a crush on a quarterback help turn a cold day into a very warm night.
My review of book 3 really applies to the whole series, this is just more of the good stuff. Characters move forward grow and change, more charaters introduced, ect. The slow and steady pace, like a pleasant walk on a warm day, is maintained. Really just a solid read.
This was a great, short story (ca 50 pages) about Mike and Danny going to visit Danny’s college. When there, Danny meets up with his friend Bobby, a younger, clueless guy who has a major crush on his footballer roommate. Another man that they go to visit is Ted, from the story Blue Paint Special. AKA Danny’s first BJ:-). Ted is a great character, you can feel that there is more to him than we find out in this story, and his life has obviously not been the easiest.
Mike was again Mike. I adore Mike. He is such a great, down-to-earth man. There’s no big drama or jealousy when he is around. And being a romance lover, of course the moments I love best in these stories are Mike’s thoughts on Danny. Like when Danny is shoveling snow...:
Or when visiting Ted in his empty house…:
Or thinking about Danny’s painting session with Ted...:
Joining them as well at Ted’s house is Bobby, and Ted invites them all to take a Sauna (luckily, Ted has a Sauna, since the old owner was from Finland:-)). Mmm, Sauna...Well, you have to be naked for that of course.
And yes, it gets hot in the Sauna…(absolutely no pun intended:-P) Which brings me to another thing I have come to love, Danny’s breaking of the 4th wall. Every now and then, he addresses the reader, and damn it. It’s like he’s reading my dirty mind!
